Notes: The population structure of the Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) was investigated using PCR amplification of the mtDNA D-loop region. Seven composite haplotypes were detected and average nucleotide and haplotype diversity over all samples were found to be 0.05 ± 0.00 and 0.75 ± 0.00 (mean ± SE) respectively. Restriction digest of the mtDNA D-loop region detected two genotypes A and B with a relative high frequencies of 0.5 and 0.36 respectively. These two genotypes (A and B) can be considered as potential genetic markers for different biological groups, stocks or seasonal races of Russian sturgeon. A maximum of 10.8% nucleotide diversity was found between haplotypes AAAAB and BBBBF. 100% heteroplasmy was found in Russian sturgeon and restriction digest of the mtDNA D-loop region also exhibited site heteroplasmy.

Description: Two water bodies of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea located in the South of Iran and different vertebrate aquatics inhabiting there consist of fishes (Osteichthyes and Chondricthyes), marine mammals, sea snakes and reptiles. A total of 860 fish species belongs to 31 orders and 142 families have been identified and reported. Amongst them, some important species have been studied from point of molecular genetics and population genetics such as croaker, silver pomfret, cobia, sardines, lanternfishes…. . On the other hand, from marine mammals a total of 10 species of dolphins, 14 species of whales and one species of dugong were identified. Also, 9 species of sea snakes have been reported from the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea belongs to 6 genus and 2 subfamilies of Hydrophidae family. It should be mentioned that no genetic studies have been done on marine mammals and sea snakes till now. In addition, a total of 5 species of sea turtles have been reported from the study area and there are few background on genetic studies for main species in the Persian Gulf.

Description: The fishery stocks of most commercial aquatic stocks in the world have shown declining trends in the past two decades. Several factors have been responsible for the decline of stocks the most important of which over fishing and over-exploitation, pollution, loss of natural habitats and natural spawning grounds, construction of dams and bridges across the important rivers which restrict the migratory routes of spawners, decrease in natural reproduction and rehabilitation of stocks through artificial breeding programs. Over-exploitation of stocks and pollution directly affect decreasing stocks in an ecosystem. Not differentiating between different populations and stocks of a species found distributed in an aquatic ecosystem is considered one of the main factors which causes the depletion of stocks in most ecosystems in the world. In most cases this is because genetic variations in aquatic stocks in the wild are not taken into consideration. Six species of sturgeons are found living in the Caspian Sea and its drainage basin which produce more than 85-90% of the world caviar. The Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) and the stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) are the main sturgeon species of the Caspian Sea. The Persian sturgeon is mainly found in the south Caspian Sea while the stellate sturgeon stocks are considered shared stocks by the five Caspian littoral states. Due to over fishing in the past two decades the legal catch figures for sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea dropped from 28500 tons in 1985 to less than 1500 tons in 2004. Similarly caviar production also dropped from 3000 tons to 110 tons in 2005. With regard to the severe reduction in sturgeon stocks it is necessary to take essential steps before these valuable species are totally wiped out. The fisheries management of the five Caspian littoral states should focus their efforts on identifying the different populations and stocks found in the Caspian Sea. Concerted measures should be taken to study the distribution and biomass of the different populations in order to develop a scientific solution for the sustainable use of these endangered species and to secure the long term conservation of sturgeon stocks. The aim of present study was to evaluate the genetic structure of the population of two species Acipenser persicus and Acipenser stellatus and to develop molecular markers to identify and differentiate different populations of these two species.

Description: Sargassum ilicifolium were collected from 18 stations of Sistan and Baluchistan coastal waters, washed out, dried and powdered then transferred to laboratory for biochemical analyzing of total protein (% DW) using Kejeldal method, amino acids using HPLC device, Crude fat (%DW) using Soxoleh method, Fatty acids with GC device after determination of FAMES, carbohydrate (%DW) with phenol sulfuric acid method, vitamins with HPLC device, Ash content using burning in Avon, minerals with flame photometry and astaxanthin with spectrophotometry and statistical analysis using SPSS, Ver. 14. Results showed that Sargassum collected from Tis beach near the Chabahar bay in dried form with 9.18±1.15% protein (p〈0.05), 2.18±0.15% crude fat (p〉0.05), 1.2% EF(p〉0.05), 33.11±2.03% carbohydrate(p〈0.05), 230.14±11.83 Kcal 100-1 energy(p〈0.05), 11.11±1.03% minerals(p〈0.05), 115.51±10.87 mg vitamin complex in 100 g seaweed DW (p〈0.05) and 104.11±1.00 µg Astaxanthin in 100 g seaweed DW(p〈0.05) had higher nutritional values comparing the samples collected from other areas. Essential fatty acids of sargassum collected from Tis had higher amount (p〈0.05) compared to the others but amino acid profiles had not (p〉0.05)except lysine(p〈0.05).

Description: The effects of dietary protein levels were investigated on growth, carcass biochemical composition and apparent digestibility coefficient in Caspian trout, Salmo trutta caspius. The present study was carried out in a completely randomized design with five experimental diets containing five different dietary levels of protein: 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55%, and 15 fish per replication of each with an initial weight of 4.85 ± 0.45 g for 105 days. Average oxygen concentration and water temperature were 7.6 ± 0.68 mg L-1 and 17.7 ± 1.5 °C, respectively, throughout the experimental period. Significantly higher final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio and condition factor were observed in the fish fed diet with 40 and 45% protein compared to those fed on the 35 and 55 % protein diets. Feed efficiency ratio in treatments fed 35 and 55 % protein were significantly higher than those of fish fed 40 and 45% dietary protein levels (P≤ 0.05). Crude protein content increased with the increasing dietary protein levels, whereas crude lipid and moisture composition decreased with the increasing dietary protein levels. Therefore, it can be cocluded that increased levels of protein in the diets for juvenile Caspian trout (Salmo trutta caspius) up to 40 and 45% improved growth performance, feed utilization parameter and economic aspect.

Description: Pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) is one of the economic fish species in the Caspian Sea, with no official report on its chromosome preparation and karyotype formula. For the metaphase preparation, 29 fry specimens of the fish weighting 10-25g each were used. Colchicine 0.01% at 0.7ml/100g of fish weight was injected in the muscular tissues. After 180 minutes, kidney and gill tissues were removed and hypotonized in KCL 0.075 M for 40 minutes, fixed with Carnoy mixture for 18-20 hours, homogenized and dropped on the slides, and stained with Giemsa 20% for 30 minutes. The prepared slides were swept by objective X100 light photomicroscope. The results showed that the chromosome number of this species is 2n = 48 and the chromosome arms is NF = 76. The karyotype formula of the species was found to be 2n = 1m + 13sm + 4st + 6a. Comparing the results of the study with those of other researchers showed that the Pikeperch chromosome number in the South Caspian Sea is similar to the fish in other parts of the world but the type of chromosomes and karyotype formula is different.
