Notes: Summary In a previous paper we described a study under laboratory conditions of the pattern of development of the various categories of descendants during the life of a colony; the present study is particularly concerned with the duration of life-span of these various categories. The life-spans of females showed a bimodal distribution and short-lived and long-lived wasps were distinguished. Considerable overlap was observed between the periods during which these two categories of wasp emerged. A relationship was found to exist between the date of orphanship, the percentage of “short-lived” females and the sex ratio of the offspring. Colonies which lost their queen as early as June showed an increase in the number of descendants produced, but these descendants were predominantly male and, among the females, the majority were “short-lived”.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Under appropriate laboratory conditions, colony founding byPolistes gallicus L. was brought forward two months and the characteristics of the wasp colony's evolution were observed and compared with those of colonies founded in the natural environment. The first male decendants were found to appear more than two months earlier than under outside contitions. In each colony, there was a tendency for males of appear in two waves, the one from eggs laid at the pre-emergence phase and the othe at least partly from worker's eggs. The two waves separated by a period during which the eggs laid were mostly of the female sex. The variety of sex-distribution patterns produced from one colony of the female sex. The variety of sex-distribution patterns the initial phase, both sexes were being produced, at least by different colonies. Findings are discused with regard to the fitness implications of the various regulatory processes involved.

Notes: [Auszug] Now and in previous experiments, freshly isolated tissues of the cambial area from two commercial varieties of carrot (cultivars: 'Rote Riesen' or 'Lobbericher Futterriiben') were used. They were always transferred after 4 weeks of culture and kept in the dark at a temperature of 28 ± 1 C. ...
