Notes: Summary The instabilities of electron convection mode in a collisional plasma including electromagnetic effects are investigated. It is found that all the three solutions of the linear-dispersion relation are unstable. It is shown that the ion temperature fluctuations can play a stabilizing role. An application to a typical low-temperature plasma is discussed.

Notes: Summary The Korteweg-de Vries equation for ion acoustic waves in the presence of weakly relativistic ion streaming velocity is derived in a magnetic plasma. It is found that relativistic effects are important in the solitary wave propagation for both fast and slow modes. Earlier results are reconfirmed.

Notes: A high-amplitude electrostatic ion-cyclotron wave is shown to be unstable against modulational instability by the electrostatic dust modes in a magnetized, homogeneous, and collisional dusty plasma. The presence of the dust component has strong effects on the nonlinear coupling via the dust modes. The electron–neutral and ion–neutral collisions are seen to have significant effects on the damping and consequent overall growth of the modulational instability of the ion-cyclotron wave in the dusty plasma. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Adequate uniformity of thin film coverage is necessary in very large scale integration. Recently, cross-sectional scanning electron microscope micrographs of thin films deposited by sputter systems producing highly directional flux have exhibited unusual growth features. A model based on the momenta of the incident sputter flux and resultant asymmetric diffusion has been developed to explain the effects and has been incorporated into simulation of ballistic deposition, a Monte Carlo simulation package. Experimental growth of tungsten films deposited over VLSI topography is presented illustrating the unique features of the deposited films which necessitated the use of the momentum model. The model reflects a general effect for thin film growth in sputtering systems that is more apparent for directional deposition, for example, tungsten deposition at low pressure or when using a collimated system. Experimental results of tungsten films deposited over high aspect ratio contact cuts are carefully compared to simulations incorporating the atomic momentum model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The modification and damping of the dust-acoustic wave in a uniformly magnetized dusty plasma have been investigated using the Vlasov-kinetic model for the plasma with dust particles as a third component having average constant charge and mass. It is noticed that for the strong finite Larmor radius (FLR) effect, the frequency and damping of the mode depend significantly on the magnetic field and they are independent of the magnetic field for the case of weak FLR effect. For exact transverse propagation (k||=0), the dust-acoustic mode ceases to exist, however, a new mode known as the "dust-lower-hybrid" mode comes into play in the hot magnetized dusty plasma. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The self-modulation of a large-amplitude magnetic electron drift (MED) wave is considered. It is found that the dynamics of the modulated wave packet is governed by the cubic Schrödinger equation. Since, in the latter, the product of the group dispersion and the nonlinear frequency shift is negative, it turns out that the one-dimensional nonlinear modulated MED wave packet propagates in the form of a rarefactional pulse. The present nonlinear structure can possibly be associated with the magnetic cavity observed in the vicinity of the magnetopause.

Notes: The effect of ion streaming on the modulational instability (MI) of ion-acoustic waves in a collisionless unmagnetized plasma is studied. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived by using the Krylov–Bogoliubov–Mitropolsky (KBM) perturbation technique. It is found that the value of the critical wavenumber kc is highly dependent upon the ion streaming velocity V0 and the system breaks into a number of stable and unstable regions. In the weak relativistic limit of V0, instability sets in for kc 〈1.47. It is reconfirmed that in the absence of ion streaming the modulational instability of ion-acoustic waves sets in at a critical wavenumber kc =1.47. UFaipxr
