    Description: A sorbent material based on silica particles modified with poly(N-vinylimidazole) (SiO 2 -PVI) has been evaluated for the treatment of samples by matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD). The extraction of four organophosphorus pesticides was done from a spiked tomato and the extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Six elution solvents were evaluated and acetone was selected due to better recovery of the four pesticides and low background signal in the chromatograms. A factorial design 2 4 was used for selection of extraction conditions. The factors were contact time, acetone volume, treatment (with or without freeze-drying) and adsorbent (SiO 2 or SiO 2 -PVI). The best recoveries were obtained using 15 minutes of contact, 2 mL of solvent and sorbent without freeze-drying. The recoveries were between 60 and 83% for SiO 2 -PVI in spiked tomato with 0.2 and 0.8μg/g.

    Description: This work focused on the evaluation of the recovery of organophosphorus pesticides from bee pollen after matrix solid phase-dispersion extraction (MSPD). Materials based on silica, titania and titania modified with polivylnylimidazole or polyestirene were used as adsorbents for the extraction of pesticides. Small amounts of fortified pollen (0.1 g, at 1 micro-g/g of pesticides), adsorbent (0.4 g) and solvent elution (1 mL de acetonitrile – ACN) were used in the extractions. For recovery evaluation, pollen extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉ABSTRACT〈/div〉W‐phase algorithm has been proven to be a reliable and robust method to calculate the centroid moment tensor (CMT) for moderate and large earthquakes. For global purposes, the W‐phase algorithm is operating in real time at the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), the Institut de Physique du Globe de Strasbourg (IPGS), and Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC). Regional implementations are operating in Japan, Mexico, Australia, Taiwan, China, and Chile. In Chile, it has been implemented at the National Seismological Center (CSN) since 2011 for regional distances, obtaining accurate results of more than 300 events, while more than 100 broadband seismometers have been installed and incorporated by CSN. We compared our solutions with NEIC W‐phase moment tensor results and with the Global CMT. The threshold W‐phase magnitude for earthquakes occurred in Chile moved from Mw 6.5 with 36 broadband stations in 2012 to 4.8 with 106 stations along the country, producing a catalog that can be used for both operational and scientific purposes. If more stations and seismic data are available, it will be possible to characterize earthquakes faster and more accurately. For tsunami early warning purposes, collaboration among regional networks will be essential to issue fast tsunami warnings.〈/span〉

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉ABSTRACT〈/div〉The subduction interface in northern Chile hosts a large tsunamigenic potential that may trigger devastating tsunamis in the near future. To quantify tsunami hazard, mitigate economic losses, and improve planning and safety protocols for government entities, it is key to understand the behavior of the seismic and tsunami source. In this work, we used a stochastic approach to generate (slip) scenarios in a nonregular domain. All of them satisfy physical laws and show a moment magnitude defined by historical seismicity and recent Global Positioning System records based on seismic coupling. Each scenario sets an initial condition to be propagated, then flow depth and runup are computed in a high‐resolution grid. The junction of these data allows the creation of probability maps for several parameters, as runup, flow depth, and flux moments. This methodology is also valid to obtain the maximum inundation zone, which is compared to the official map of the Chilean government. The results suggest that the studied region has a notable tsunami hazard, which is reflected in the obtained inundation zone.〈/span〉

    Description: Metazoan development depends on the accurate execution of differentiation programs that allow pluripotent stem cells to adopt specific fates. Differentiation requires changes to chromatin architecture and transcriptional networks, yet whether other regulatory events support cell-fate determination is less well understood. Here we identify the ubiquitin ligase CUL3 in complex with its vertebrate-specific substrate adaptor KBTBD8 (CUL3(KBTBD8)) as an essential regulator of human and Xenopus tropicalis neural crest specification. CUL3(KBTBD8) monoubiquitylates NOLC1 and its paralogue TCOF1, the mutation of which underlies the neurocristopathy Treacher Collins syndrome. Ubiquitylation drives formation of a TCOF1-NOLC1 platform that connects RNA polymerase I with ribosome modification enzymes and remodels the translational program of differentiating cells in favour of neural crest specification.     Description: Excessive intake of dietary fats leads to diminished brain dopaminergic function. It has been proposed that dopamine deficiency exacerbates obesity by provoking compensatory overfeeding as one way to restore reward sensitivity. However, the physiological mechanisms linking prolonged high-fat intake to dopamine deficiency remain elusive. We show that administering oleoylethanolamine, a gastrointestinal lipid messenger whose synthesis is suppressed after prolonged high-fat exposure, is sufficient to restore gut-stimulated dopamine release in high-fat-fed mice. Administering oleoylethanolamine to high-fat-fed mice also eliminated motivation deficits during flavorless intragastric feeding and increased oral intake of low-fat emulsions.
