Abstract Complex oxide 2Al2O3·MgO·3CaO and a triple oxide eutectic TiO2-MgO-CaO, both with relatively low melting points, were used to reinforce a nickel matrix by the internal crystalization method. Strength properties of the fibres were measured by testing composites with nickel as well as molybdenum matrices. It is shown that the fibre strength depended strongly on both the initial melt composition of the fibre material and the fabrication regimes.
