Notes: The Tian-Calvet microcalorimeter has been used to measure the heat of solution of atactic polystyrene in toluene at 30°C. By using a special technique for polymer sample preparation, it has been possible to measure directly the difference in conformational energy of the polystyrene chain at different temperatures, from 30 to 100°C. and to calculate its contribution to the specific heat.

Notes: The conformational energy contribution (ΔUconf) to the heat of solution in polymer-solvent systems is presented and discussed in connection with chain conformational properties. In particular, ΔUconf has been discussed in terms of various possible mechanisms of coil deformation.

Notes: Heats of solution (ΔHexp) in solvents of increasing thermodynamic power have been measured for four polymers: polystyrene (PS), poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), polyisobutylene (PIB) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). After subtraction from ΔHexp of an interaction term (calculated by the Hildebrand treatment based on solubility parameters) and the excess volume term, the quantity remaining is interpreted as the conformational energy contribution (ΔUconf) to the heat of solution. ΔUconf appears to correlate well with some basic conformational properties of the chain, such as the sign of the temperature coefficient of unperturbed dimensions derived from solution properties, and shows a monotonic behavior with α, the expansion coefficient of the polymer coil in the final solution. Numerical values of ΔUconf, at least for those cases in which polymer solubility parameters are known with some certainty, are much larger than those evaluated from rubber elasticity experiments (through the experimentally accessible value of the energy component of the force of retraction im simple elongation).

Notes: The behavior of molecular weights of grafted polystyrene onto γ-preirradiated cellulose diacetate was studied. The grafting of styrene onto cellulose diacetate was kinetically followed with particular attention paid to the polystyrene molecular weight behavior. The molecular weight was evaluated with the polymer fractions obtained by acid hydrolysis of the grafted copolymer. From the experimental results it appeared that the grafted chain molecular weight is completely controlled by the physical properties of the polymeric matrix either during a “bulk” or a “front” grafting.

Notes: Heats of mixing (ΔHm) for three polymers in three solvents have been measured using a TIAN-CALVET microcalorimeter. ΔHm are positive (endothermic) and are shown to be in good quantitative agreement with HILDEBRAND-SCATCHARD expectations. These results offer the occation to consider a new contribution to ΔHm which has ben ignored in currently accepted thermodynamic theories and which could explain the large deviations from the HILDEBRAND treatment of ΔHm, occurring for polymer/non Θ-solvent systems.

Notes: Measurements of diffusion, viscosity, and cryoscopic determinations of molecular weight were carried out in benzene on eight fractions of polystyrene with low molecular weight (up to about 3,000). These indicate that there is a linear relation between MD and M1/2. This relationship corresponds to the Einstein-Stokes equation in which the equivalent radius is replaced by the gyration radius. The value of the rotation hindrance factor A calculated from the results of diffusion measurements on polystyrenes with low molecular weights was found to be equal to that calculated from the viscosity data on polymers of high molecular weight in θ solvents, where the swelling effect is nil. This confirms, therefore, that this factor is constant over a wide range of molecular weights. The viscosity data on low molecular weight polystyrene in benzene at 20°C. are very similar to those for samples of high molecular weight in θ solvents. The molecular dimensions of polystyrenes with low molecular weight are therefore unaffected by the swelling effect. The Flory constant Φ, deduced from cryoscopic, diffusion, and viscosity measurements, for the values of M, (h̄2)1/2, and [η], respectively, assumes a value of 3 × 1021. The results have been briefly discussed, from the point of view of the Kirkwood-Riseman and Debye-Bueche theories.
