    Notes: Seventy three populations of maize (Zea mays L.) were grown for two years at two locations in Spain in order to study the heritability and constancy of the non-ear traits days to silking, days to anthesis, plant height, ear height, and leaf number.The differences among populations were highly significant in the individual analyses, as well as in the combined analyses for all the traits.The interaction components of variance were in general small. Broad-sense heritabilities ranged from 0.844 to 0.869. Constancies were high, in all cases above 1.0.It is concluded that the non-ear trails studied can be confidently used in a numerical classification of populations of maize.

    Notes: Knowledge of patterns of genetic diversity among existing cultivars helps to broaden the genetic base of new cultivars and maximizes the use of available germplasm resources. This study examined the organization of diversity for morphological traits in 66 landraces of cultivated common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) from Galicia and its relationship with phaseolin seed protein diversity. Data on growth habit, seed and pod traits obtained from field evaluations at two locations during the 1989—91 cropping seasons were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis. Cluster analysis based on 14 quantitative variables and five qualitative variables identified 11 groups. The landraces were also characterized by phaseolin electrophoresis. The results allowed separation of these landraces into Middle and Andean American groups, which could be further divided into at least eight groups within the Andean American cultivars and three within the Mesoamerican cultivars. These groups in turn corresponded to the previously described races Nueva Granada and Peru of South American origin, and races Durango, Jalisco and Mesoamerica from the Middle American domestication centre. These results confirm the existence of two major groups of germplasm in the cultivated common bean landraces from Galicia, Mesoamerican vs. Andean American.

    Notes: Abstract Fifty-six populations of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were grown in Pontevedra (Northwestern Spain) in four different environments in order to study their genetic diversity in 18 agronomical traits. All characters showed significant differences among populations, and most of them had significant genotype-environment interactions. Broad-sense heritability for this pool of characters ranged from 0.87 (seed length) to 0.12 (seed yield). Sixteen populations which deserve special attention because of their breeding value for earliness, yield, pod and seed size have been identified.

    Notes: Summary Seventy two landraces of green and sugar pea (Pisum sativum), plus four elite commercial cultivars as controls, were evaluated in 1989–1990 for 19 quantitative traits. The landraces show a broad diversity in most of the traits studied. There are significant positive correlations of flowering date with node of first flower, shoot height and number of days to maturity, which could be relevant parameters for evaluating plant precocity. The analysis of means over each population in some important morpho-biological and quality traits in pod and seed show that there are seven landraces which deserve special attention for having promising breeding value.

    Notes: Summary Two experiments were carried out with two objectives. First, to establish the phenetic relationships among the maize (Zea mays L.) landraces from Galicia (Northwestern Spain) maintained at the Misión Biológica de Galicia. Second, to assess the resemblance between a collection of Spanish populations (including the landraces from Galicia) and a set of US Corn Belt varieties. For the first objective 73 varieties from Galicia, along with 9 hybrid checks, were grown in 9×9 simple lattices at two locations for two years. For the second objective 131 populations from the US Corn Belt and Spain, along with 9 hybrid checks, were grown for three years in unreplicated experiments. Cluster analyses were carried out with the first principal components that accounted for a significant amount of the total variation. Four groups were found among the landraces from Galicia. The populations from Spain and America were classified as belonging to nine main groups. The replicated experiment was more accurate than the unreplicated one. However, it is concluded that an unreplicated test grown in several environments is accurate enough to detect the main groups, although some inaccuracies should be expected.

    Notes: Summary The intereropping of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) is a common practice in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. In this experiment, 25 populations of bush bean were evaluated for nutritional and culinary traits of dry seed and immature pod in sole crop and in intercrop in two years and in two locations, in order to determine whether selection of bush bean in sole crop can result in genetic progress for intercrop. There were no differences in the population means between cropping systems. Significant differences were detected among populations for all traits tudied except starch content, crude ash, water absorption and coat proportion. Population x environment interaction was significant for pod thickness. Bean populations did not interact with cropping systems for any trait, although there were differences between cropping systems for crude protein. These results suggest that a sole crop system provides sufficient information to select bean populations efficiently for the bush bean-maize intercropping system, although the advanced generations of the breeding program should be tested for quantitative traits such as protein content in the appropriate cropping system (intercropping) to know the competitive ability with the associated species. This would permit to choose bush bean populations which complement more efficiently and would be less competitive with the maize population.

    Notes: Summary A multivariate statistical method was applied on 19 quantitative and 11 qualitative traits in order to classify 105 pea landraces from the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Ten elite cultivars were used as controls. The eleven qualitative characters were transformed by special coding. A procedure of data analyzed based on the combined resemblance matrix as a result of the joint resemblance matrix for quantitative and qualitative traits was constructed and described. The 105 pea landraces display a wide diversity at the infraspecific level for the 19 quantitative traits, however, just ten of them plus one qualitative trait could be considered as good descriptors for the pea landraces studied. The grouping patterns of the landraces did not reflect geographical origin, but provided taxonomically useful results, since it shows the possible use of six groups, vis. Group I (12 landraces), includes accessions which could be used for green and canned consumption, Group IV (18 landraces) includes edible-podded types and Group V (12 landraces) could be used for field pea (dry seed cultivars), Groups VI and VIII (each with 26 accessions) are also extremely interesting because of their heterogeneity.
