Through his autobiographical memoirs, Albert Speer successfully managed to have a lasting influence on his public perception. Roman B. Kremer analyses the rhetorical patterns within Speer’s text and contrasts them with the rhetorical methods found within the autobiographical texts of other NS politicians and militarists, such as Baldur von Schirach, Karl Dönitz and Erich Raeder. His study impressively demonstrates the rhetorical finesse of Speer’s memoirs, picking up on fundamental insights into the relationship between autobiography and justification, which have often been somewhat discounted in the past.

Notes: In this work we examine a system of inelastic particles confined to move on a line between an elastic wall and a heat source. Solving a Boltzmann equation for this system leads to an analytic expression for steady state behavior. Numerical simulations show that the system is in fact capable of simultaneously displaying both the uniform density of the analytic solution, and a state in which the particles are collected into a cluster adjacent to the elastic wall. The boundary conditions for the Boltzmann treatment are then reworked to provide a theoretical description of how smooth particle distributions and clumping phenomena can coexist. From this, we gain a prediction for the time scale of clump formation in this system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Orobanche crenata (broomrape) is a root parasite that represents the major constraint for pea (Pisum sativum) cultivation in the Mediterranean area and the Middle East. The efficacy of available control methods is minimal and breeding for O. crenata resistance is considered the most promising strategy of control. Only moderate levels of incomplete resistance are available in pea germplasm. In order to identify and map the quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling the trait, 115 F2 plants derived from the cross between a susceptible and a resistant parent were analysed using isozymes, random amplified polymorphic DNA and sequence tagged site markers. F2-derived F3 lines were studied for O. crenata resistance under field conditions. The linkage map was constructed with MAPMAKER V2.0. Of 217 markers, 120 could be mapped into 21 linkage groups. Linkage groups consisted of 13 to two marker loci covering 1770 cM. The mean inter-marker distance was 17.64 cM. Simple interval mapping (SIM) and composite interval mapping (CIM) were performed using QTL Cartographer. The CIM approach using five cofactors was clearly the most efficient way to locate putative QTL. Two QTL for O. crenata resistance (Ocp1 and Ocp2), explaining only a moderate portion of the observed variation (9.6% and 11.4% respectively), were detected.

Notes: Summary Infradian cycles of body weight occur in captive dormice,Glis glis. The period of these cycles is often about 2 months but is highly variable both between and within individuals. These cycles can persist for at least 3 years. This paper describes a number of variables that change on an infradian basis along with body weight. These include: food and water intake, weight of the liver, adrenal and salivary gland weight, testes weight and spermatogenic condition, body temperature and wheel-running activity. Both the amount of running and its distribution over a 24 h period change. However, infradian cycles do not appear to be generated by the circadian system because they persist even in continuous bright light sufficiently intense to disrupt circadian organization. They also persist in LD 18∶6, LD 12∶12, LD 6∶18 and in naturally changing photoperiods. No evidence of photoperiodic effects on cycles was detected except that animals in long days have slightly higher moulting scores than those in short days. Moulting is more marked when body weight stays relatively stable. In dormice remaining stable in weight for several months testes have sperm present. The period of infradian cycles is temperature dependent: in a cool room animals that hibernate have longer cycles with periods varying from a few months to about a year. In a number of respects at least, infradian cycles appear to be accelerated circannual cycles. The adaptive value of a system that gives rise to infradian cycles probably relates to opportunism in an unpredictable environment. Infradian cycles in dormice may be a useful preparation for obtaining data on spontaneous physiological and behavioural changes in hibernators in less than a year.

Notes: Abstract: We study the nonlinear deformations of a long rectangular elastic plate clamped along its edges and submitted to in-plane biaxial compression. Using the Föppl-von Kármán equations, we predict various secondary buckling modes according to the applied longitudinal and transverse compressions. A model experiment is carried out in a thin polycarbonate film, and the observed buckling patterns are found in good agreement with theory. Pattern selection in the delamination of compressed thin films is discussed in the light of these results.

Notes: Abstract During tsetse control operations near Bouaflé, Ivory Coast, Africa, a study was made of environmental side-effects of helicopter sprayings with permethrin and deltamethrin on a riverine forest. Terrestrial and aquatic arthropod populations and fish were observed for acute effects. The abundance of the species was assessed by various trapping devices before, during, and after the spraying cycle. Populations of mayfly-larvae and small shrimps (Caridina africana) were virtually eliminated after the spraying cycle. TheEphemeroptera recovered within the same season. Caddis-fly andSimulium-larvae populations were affected but they recovered within each spraying interval. Large shrimps (Macrobrachium vollenhovenii) were paralyzed by the insecticide. Recovery occurred within 48 hr. Among the terrestrial arthropods, the hymenopteran and dipteran populations were significantly affected. No effect was observed on bottom dwelling spiders. The ability of the ecosystems to recover from the disturbance is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A liaison between quantum logics and non-commutative differential geometry isoutlined: a class of quantum logics are proved to possess the structure of discretedifferential manifolds. We show that the set of proper elements of an arbitraryatomic Greechie logic is naturally endowed by Koszul's differential calculus.

Notes: Summary Five recombinant plasmids, pBK2646, pBK611, pRC3, pRC4 and pRC5, carrying rpoB rifampicin-resistant RNA-polymerase genes were obtained. The sequence analysis of these plasmids revealed certain structural changes in the rpoB gene which specify corresponding alterations in the β-subunit of RNA polymerase. Some functional properties of the corresponding mutant strains and their RNA polymerases have been investigated.
