Notes: The quadratic hyperpolarizability tensor of 4-amino-4'-nitrodiphenyl sulfide has been sampled by measurement of the z component of its vector part, when z is the permanent dipole direction. This was also accomplished for the oxygen, selenium, and tellurium analogues. It was found that large differences in their frequency-doubling efficiency as powdered solids are not reflected in this molecular property. The sulfur, selenium and tellurium ethers have about the same hyperpolarizabilities while that of the oxygen member is somewhat lower.

Notes: [Auszug] IN 1954 a British Standard1 on the normal threshold of hearing for pure tones by earphone listening was published. The values specified in the standard are based on two investigations2.3 carried out in the United Kingdom in which tests were made on more than 1,200 ears of otologically normal ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE increasing interest in exact noise assessment nowadays prompts us to give an outline of the method we use to calculate the measure of loudness-level generally known as Zwicker phons. The phon is the internationally recognized unit of loud-ness-level and i& defined in the following way1. ...

Notes: We have recorded, assigned, and analyzed the photoelectron spectrum of ZnO−. The adiabatic electron affinity (E.A.a) of ZnO and the vibrational frequencies of both ZnO and ZnO− were determined directly from the spectrum, with a Franck–Condon analysis of its vibrational profile providing additional refinements to these parameters along with structural information. As a result, we found that E.A.a(ZnO)=2.088±0.010 eV, ωe(ZnO)=805±40 cm−1, ωe(ZnO−)=625±40 cm−1, and that re(ZnO−)〉re(ZnO) by 0.07 Å. Since our measured value of E.A.a(ZnO) is 0.63 eV larger than the literature value of E.A.(O), it was also evident, through a thermochemical cycle, that D0(ZnO−)〉D0(ZnO) by 0.63 eV. This, together with the literature value of D0(ZnO), gives a value for D0(ZnO−) of 2.24 eV. Since the extra electron in ZnO− is expected to occupy an antibonding orbital, the combination of D0(ZnO−)〉D0(ZnO), ωe(ZnO−)〈ωe(ZnO), and re(ZnO−)〉re(ZnO) was initially puzzling. An explanation was provided by the calculations of Bauschlicher and Partridge, which are presented in the accompanying paper. Their work showed that our experimental findings can be understood in terms of the a 3Π state of ZnO dissociating to its ground-state atoms, while the X 1Σ+ state of ZnO formally dissociates to a higher energy atomic asymptote. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary. Experiments conducted in Northern Ireland between 1956 and 1960 show that Ranunculus repens may be controlled by MCPA-salt or -ester applied in November or December. These compounds are more effective than salt or ester formulations of 2,4-D and salt formulations of MCPB and 2,4-DB. Three varieties of raspberry were uninjured when a salt formulation of MCPA was applied during December at 2.2 kg/ha to the same plots for three successive years. Five other varieties were uninjured after one year's treatment. Wetting the dormant canes to run-off with MCPA-salt at 2000 ppm caused no injury but, in one experiment, MCPA-salt at 4.5 kg/ha reduced the number of shoots the following season. The margin of safety is not high but, in the absence of any alternative chemical means of controlling R. repens in raspberries, a late November or December application of MCPA-salt at 2.2 kg/ha is recommended in Northern Ireland where this weed is prevalent. In two trials, raspberries appeared to be slightly more tolerant of 2,4-D than of MCPA but in general, control of R. repens with winter applications of 2,4-D was inadequate except where the weeds were young or active.La lutte contre Ranunculus repens L. dans les framboisiers

Notes: Summary. A series of field trials was conducted to determine if the tolerance of newly planted strawberry runners to simazine could be increased by placing adsorbents in the vicinily of the root zone at planting time. Powdered steam-activated charcoal was found to be the most suitable of seven adsorbents tested. Dipping the roots of runners in charcoal before planting was more effective and practicable than placing a similar quantity of charcoal around each runner at planting time. No significant damage was recorded in several trials in which dipped runners were sprayed with simazine at 1 lb/ac within a few days of planting.Although new roots are likely to take up the herbicide as they grow away from the charcoal-protected area around the plant, the protection provided by the adsorbent appears to be sufficient to enable the young plants to develop satisfactorily.Utilisation d'adsorbants et de simazine sur des fraisiers récemment plantés

Notes: [Auszug] Rod outer segments begin to appear around the optic disk at about postnatal day 8 (P8) in the rat, and they grow rapidly towards the adult size over the next three weeks12. We have recorded the membane current of single rod outer segments, using the suction pipette method13, from animals ranging in ...
