Notes: Despite sufficient rainfall, large parts of Eastern India suffer from water scarcity. Ground water occurs in weathered or semiweathered/fractured layers in hard-rock areas whose thickness varies, in general, from 5 to 20 m.Ground-water studies have been carried out in several areas in and around Dhanbad (Lat. 23°48′N, Long. 86°24′E) in Bihar State of India. The area covers Pre-Cambrian hornblende and feldspathic gneisses, schists, granulites, quartzites, metabasics and pegmatities. The area forms a part of ENE-WSW trending Satpura orogenic belt. The quartz reefs formed as fault fillings act as barriers to the flow of ground water. Geophysical investigations, using electrical methods, with Schlumberger configuration using AB up to 300 m were carried out at most of the locations. Conventional resistivity meters were used for this purpose. The data from 78 Schlumberger soundings has been analysed. Both A and H type curves were obtained. Spectrum of resistivity values has been prepared to study the over-all variation of resistivity values in the area. It is observed that the curves with arithmetic mean values are quite representative. The values obtained from spectral and regression analyses are nearly the same. The results of geoelectric soundings have been compared with the geological section wherever available. It is inferred that the thickness of the weathered layer as deduced from Schlumberger soundings includes partly the unweathered/fractured layer as well. An attempt has been made to find an empirical relationship between the daily yield of water in gallons/day and the longitudinal conductance (s = h/p) of the weathered layer. Two empirical relationships have been obtained, one for the winter months, December-January and the other for the summer months, June-July. A suitable explanation for the two curves has been given.

Notes: Abstract Nearly pin-hole-free ferroelectric films of Pb(Zr0.6Ti0.4)O3 (PZT) with uniform compositions and thicknesses were synthesized using metallo-organic decomposition (MOD) technology. The metallo-organic precursors used for these PZT films were lead diethylhexanoate, (Pb(C7H15COO)2), titanium dimethoxy-dineodecanoate (Ti(OCH3)2 (C9 H19 COO)2), and zirconium tetraethylhexanoate (Zr(C7H15COO)4). The film thickness, structural development and electrical properties of these films were characterized using a surface profilometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a standardized RT 66 ferroelectric test system. The effect of the processing conditions on the properties of ferroelectric 60/40 PZT films were investigated. The important processing parameters studied included the substrate history, the spinning speed and time, the film thickness, the pyrolysing temperature and the annealing conditions. The experimental results show that the structural development and electrical properties of these 60/40 PZT films are closely correlated with these processing parameters. The polarization-reversal characteristics and fatigue behaviour, which are important for non-volatile memory applications, were also studied. By optimizing the annealing conditions, a 60/40 PZT film exhibited a dielectric strength of 1 MVcm−1 and a sensed remanent polarization value of 9.3 ΜC cm2 after cycling 1010 times. This demonstrates the excellent potential of PZT films for non-volatile memory applications. The measured dielectric-constant values for these 60/40 PZT films were in the range of 300 to 900, which is about 75 to 220 times larger than that of the currently used dielectric, SiO2, in dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). This fact suggests that PZT film is an excellent alternative for the new generation, extremely high-density DRAM applications.

Notes: Summary Thirteen spontaneously occurring chlorophyll deficient phenotypes have been described and their genetic basis was established. Ten of these — ‘white’, ‘white tipped green’, ‘patchy white’, ‘white virescent’, ‘white striping 1’, ‘white striping 2’, ‘white striping 4’, ‘fine striping’, ‘chlorina’ and ‘yellow virescent’ showed monogenic recessive inheritance and the remaining three — ‘yellow striping’, ‘yellow green’ and ‘light green’ seedling phenotypes showed digenic recessive inheritance. The genes for (i) ‘white tipped green’ (wr) and ‘yellow virescent’ (yv) and (ii) ‘patchy white’ (pw) and ‘white striping 1’ (wst 1) showed independent assortment. Further, the genes for ‘white’ (w), ‘white tipped green’ (wr) and ‘yellow virescent’ (yv) were inherited independently of the gene for hairy leaf margin (Hm). In the mutants — ‘white tipped green’, ‘patchy white’, ‘white striping 1’, ‘white striping 2’, ‘fine striping’, ‘chlorina’, ‘yellow virescent’, ‘yellow striping’, ‘yellow green’ and ‘light green’ phenotypes total quantity of chlorophyll was significantly less than that in the corresponding controls, while in ‘white virescent’ there was no reduction in the mature stage. For nine of the mutants the quantity of chlorophyll was also estimated in F1's (mutant x control green). In F1's of six of the mutants — ‘white tip’, ‘patchy white’, ‘chlorina’, ‘yellow virescent’, ‘fine striping’ and ‘yellow striping’ the quantity of chlorophyll was almost equal to the wild type. In the F1's of three of the mutants — ‘white striping 1’, ‘white striping 2’ and ‘light green’ an intermediate value between the mutant and wild types was observed. In ‘yellow virescent’ retarded synthesis of chlorophyll, particularly chlorophyll a was observed in the juvenile stage. Reduced quantity of chlorophyll was associated with defective chloroplasts. In the mutants — ‘white tipped green, ‘white virescent’, ‘fine striping’, ‘chlorina’, ‘yellow striping’, ‘yellow green’ and ‘light green’ defective plastids were also observed. In ‘patchy white’ secondary destruction of chlorophylls and the presence of defective plastids were found to be associated with reduced chlorophyll quantity at maturity. Paper chromatographic studies of leaf flavonoids revealed some variation between the inbreds, but there were three common spots, 7, 8 and 9, except for PDP in which the spot 8 was absent. Chlorophyll deficient mutants differed from their respective controls in the absence of one or more of the spots present in the controls and in the presence of new spots in some of the mutants. Most of the chlorophyll mutants showed higher survival rate in the Kharif season than in Rabi season which was attributed to the higher mean day temperature and longer day light period in the Kharif season than in Rabi season.

Notes: Summary Male sterility in Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke, inbred line IP 482, was found to be inherited as a monofactorial recessive phenotype. Homozygosity for the gene designated ms 2, produced in addition to pollen abortion, plasmodial tapetum, plasmodial pollen mother cells, delayed and asynchronous meiotic development, desynapsis and blockage of meiosis. Plasmodial PMCs resulted from the fusion of PMCs at pachytene.

Notes: Abstract Cytological study of three distinctly separated populations ofPoecilocera picta revealed a chromosome number of 2N = 18 + XO/ XX. Except for the hemizygosity of a procentric heterochromatic block in the M6 pair of the Bangalore population, the basic karyotype of the three populations is markedly similar. The autosomal karyotype formula is 2Lt + 4Mt + 1 Mst + 2S st and the telocentric X chromosome is the longest of the complement. All bivalents at pachytene carried procentric heterochromatic blocks. The M4 is the nucleolus organiser with the NOR region situated interstitially but proximal to the centromere. About 11 µm (4%) of the total (290 µm) autosomal pachytene complement is heterochromatic; a major portion of it is contributed by the S9 pair which is mostly heterochromatic. Chiasmata are localized proximally and distally and in the S9 pair their formation is confined to the short procentric euchromatic segment of the long arm. Female meiosis did not reveal any chromomere pattern at pachytene and, unlike in the male, the sex bivalent in the female is indistinguishable from the autosomal bivalents. G- and C-banding patterns in males showed procentric bands in all the chromosomes. In addition there are eight telomeric and two interstitial bands which are C negative. The S9 pair showed only two bands. The G-banding pattern of the sex chromosome in meiosis showed only a centric band while the heterochromatic body of the facultatively heterochromatic X remained G negative.

Notes: Abstract From the mechanical data on 7475 Al alloy, it is evident that flow stress is significantly dependent on the strain during superplastic flow. This is due to its ability to strain-harden during superplasticity. The rate of increase in the flow stress is much higher at 457° C than at 517° C. This gives rise to non-unique values for the parameters of the constitutive equation. At 457° C, whereas the stress exponent (n) and activation energy for superplastic flow at 1 × 10−4 sec−1 increase only slightly with strain, the grain size sensitivity parameter (p) and structure parameter (A) decrease significantly with strain. These changes in the constitutive parameters are associated with dislocation activity occurring within the grain interior, leading to grain elongation without significant changes in the grain size, through the parameter, (b/d) p , of the constitutive equation.

Notes: Abstract The paper analyses the output of the publication data of an Indian laboratory in the field of physics inSCI and nonSCI covered Indian and foreign journals, processes developed and Indian patents filed during the period 1965–82 to find out the pattern of productivity. Looks at the journals wherein the laboratory scientists publish. Also points out the sub-areas of physics in which the laboratory scientists have published maximum papers and also mentions about the pattern of scientific co-authorship in the research work. Correlation coefficients between input variable (manpower and budget) with output variables (number of papers published, processes developed and Indian patents accepted) have been calculated.
