Notes: The method of obtaining the irreducible representations of crystallographic point groups is discussed. It employs the little-group technique and makes use of the solvability property. Octahedral group O is treated as an illustration.

Notes: Despite sufficient rainfall, large parts of Eastern India suffer from water scarcity. Ground water occurs in weathered or semiweathered/fractured layers in hard-rock areas whose thickness varies, in general, from 5 to 20 m.Ground-water studies have been carried out in several areas in and around Dhanbad (Lat. 23°48′N, Long. 86°24′E) in Bihar State of India. The area covers Pre-Cambrian hornblende and feldspathic gneisses, schists, granulites, quartzites, metabasics and pegmatities. The area forms a part of ENE-WSW trending Satpura orogenic belt. The quartz reefs formed as fault fillings act as barriers to the flow of ground water. Geophysical investigations, using electrical methods, with Schlumberger configuration using AB up to 300 m were carried out at most of the locations. Conventional resistivity meters were used for this purpose. The data from 78 Schlumberger soundings has been analysed. Both A and H type curves were obtained. Spectrum of resistivity values has been prepared to study the over-all variation of resistivity values in the area. It is observed that the curves with arithmetic mean values are quite representative. The values obtained from spectral and regression analyses are nearly the same. The results of geoelectric soundings have been compared with the geological section wherever available. It is inferred that the thickness of the weathered layer as deduced from Schlumberger soundings includes partly the unweathered/fractured layer as well. An attempt has been made to find an empirical relationship between the daily yield of water in gallons/day and the longitudinal conductance (s = h/p) of the weathered layer. Two empirical relationships have been obtained, one for the winter months, December-January and the other for the summer months, June-July. A suitable explanation for the two curves has been given.

Notes: Vortex-like coherent structures are observed in the edge plasma of ohmically heated ADITYA tokamak [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 69, 1375 (1992)]. The structures are observed on statistical basis when the floating potential fluctuations are analyzed using conditional averaging technique. The structures, which have dipole nature, experience stretching until their radial isolation across the limiter is destroyed. The potential fluctuation also shows non-Gaussian statistics indicating intermittency in broadband turbulence of the edge plasma. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the application of the vacuum photodiode to detect vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation emitted from the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) Tokamak. It is simple to fabricate and provides broadband spectral response in the VUV and ultrasoft x ray (10 eV–1 keV). In our design, a stainless steel photocathode is used, which has a response identical to tungsten in the wavelength range 100–1200 Å. Its surface is passivated, to minimize contamination and monolayer deposition, by electropolishing it. Some representative experimental results illustrating the range of applicability are presented with special emphasis on its performance in disruptive shots. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Clostridium thermocellum SS8 produced both carboxymethylcellulase (CMCase) and Avicelase when grown on cellulose. CMCase activity was unaffected by Ca2+, Mg2+, dithionate or dithiothreitol (DTT). Avicelase activity increased 2-fold with 5 mM DTT and 10 mM Ca2+. Cellulase and amylase were produced when a celluloseadapted culture was grown on starch. The mould grew best on sucrose and was inhibited by NaCl above 10 g/l.

Notes: Abstract An attempt is made to develop a new workability test for fibre-reinforced concrete. The depth of penetration by a cone of specific dimensions and weight is observed to consistently reflect the workability of fibre-reinforced concrete in the fresh state. An extensive experimental investigation in which various conventional workability tests and the new cone penetration, test are conducted on fresh fibre concrete is described. The effect of fibre content, fibre geometry and water/cement ratio on workability as reflected by slump, ACI inverted cone, V-B time and the new cone penetration test are reported. Cones of different weights and angles are tried and it is observed that the penetration in millimetres by a cone of 4 kg weight and 30° apex angle may be taken as a measure of the workability.

Notes: Abstract Several theories of composite materials have been used to predict the mechanical properties of concrete. In many cases there is no basis to judge the relative superiority of one model over that of the other. It is, however, essential that the model and the related assumptions are axiomatically acceptable, and have physical relevance to the problem under consideration. In this paper the suitability of a new model of multiphase materials to concrete is examined. It is shown that the model predicts the effective Young's modulus and shrinkage of concrete quite accurately. As far as prediction of creep behaviour is concerned, the model qualitatively compares well with many other models proposed earlier. However, further studies are essential into more refined formulation of the problem of creep phenomenon.

Notes: Abstract  The steady, two-dimensional, incompressible MHD flow past a circular cylinder with an applied magnetic field parallel to the main flow is studied using the finite difference method. The magnetic Reynolds number is assumed to be small. Results are presented up to the Reynolds number R=500 and interaction parameter N=1.3. As N increases suppression of the separation is observed. Drag coefficient is decreasing for the small values of N and then increasing as N increases. It is found that a smaller value of far field distance is required as N increases.
