Description: Neutron supermirrors and supermirror polarizers are thin film multilayer based devices which are used for reflecting and polarizing neutrons in various neutron based experiments. In the present communication, the in-house development of a 9 m long in-line dc sputtering system has been described which is suitable for deposition of neutron supermirrors on large size (1500 mm × 150 mm) substrates and in large numbers. The optimisation process of deposition of Co and Ti thin film, Co/Ti periodic multilayers, and a-periodic supermirrors have also been described. The system has been used to deposit thin film multilayer supermirror polarizers which show high reflectivity up to a reasonably large critical wavevector transfer of ∼0.06 Å −1 (corresponding to m = 2.5, i.e., 2.5 times critical wavevector transfer of natural Ni). The computer code for designing these supermirrors has also been developed in-house.

Description: The interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor gamma chain (IL-2R gamma) is an essential component of high- and intermediate-affinity IL-2 receptors. IL-2R gamma was demonstrated to be a component of the IL-4 receptor on the basis of chemical cross-linking data, the ability of IL-2R gamma to augment IL-4 binding affinity, and the requirement for IL-2R gamma in IL-4-mediated phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1. The observation that IL-2R gamma is a functional component of the IL-4 receptor, together with the finding that IL-2R gamma associates with the IL-7 receptor, begins to elucidate why deficiency of this common gamma chain (gamma c) has a profound effect on lymphoid function and development, as seen in X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Russell, S M -- Keegan, A D -- Harada, N -- Nakamura, Y -- Noguchi, M -- Leland, P -- Friedmann, M C -- Miyajima, A -- Puri, R K -- Paul, W E -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1993 Dec 17;262(5141):1880-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Section on Pulmonary and Molecular Immunology, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH, Bethesda, MD 20892.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8266078" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Hot-pressed MnZn ferrites are extensively used for magnetic recording applications. The present work investigates the magnetic properties of MnZnNi ferrites by using the Mössbauer spectroscopy and taking bulk magnetic measurements. Ferrites of the composition Mn0.6Zn0.4−xNixFe2O4 (0≤x≤0.4) have been prepared by uniaxial hot pressing technique. The final sintering was performed at 1250 °C for 3 h under a pressure of 35 MPa. The samples exhibit high density (porosity 〈0.1%) nearly uniform grain size (average grain size=0.01 mm approx.), and large Vickers' hardness (650 approx.). The variations of initial permeability, saturation magnetization, Curie temperature, and coercive field are studied by changing Ni2+ content. The initial permeability increases slightly for x≤0.05, attains a maximum value of 5660, and decreases continuously for x(approximately-greater-than)0.05. The saturation magnetization increases for x≤0.25 and decreases for x(approximately-greater-than)0.25. The maximum saturation magnetization obtained for x=0.25 is 4825 G. The Curie temperature increases markedly from 431 to 682 K with increasing Ni2+ content. The coercive field decreases slightly for x≤0.05, becomes as low as 0.09 Oe, and increases almost linearly thereafter. The results are explained on the basis of sublattice magnetizations, stren of AB exchange interactions and change in magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant. The Mössbauer studies reveal the well-defined hyperfine spectra for Ni2+-substituted samples. The isomer shift remains almost unaffected by Ni2+ substitution, while the quadrupole splitting is observed to be negligible for all the samples. The hyperfine field decreases continuously as x increases from 0 to 0.4. The occupancy ratio of Fe3+ ions on octahedral to tetrahedral sites yields a cation distribution which conforms with the bulk magnetic measurements. The MnZnNi ferrite compositions with x ranging from 0.05 to 0.10 exhibit properties which make them suitable materials for recording head applications. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic properties of Ni-Zn ferrites have been upgraded by preparing hot-pressed Ni0.4Zn0.6−2xLixFe2+xO4 ferrites wherein 2xZn2+ ions have been substituted byxLi1+ andxFe3+ ions. This results in an increase of saturation magnetization, Curie temperature and dielectric constant, whereas resistivity and initial permeability are reduced. The values of saturation magnetization, Curie temperature and dielectric constant are improved due to hot pressing in which grain growth and densification are controlled simultaneously. The variations of saturation magnetization and Curie temperature can be explained by the preferential site occupancy of Li1+ and Ni2+ ions at the tetrahedral site, sublattice magnetization with canted spin structure, and magnetic exchange interactions. The inferences drawn from the bulk magnetic properties of these ferrites conform with the conclusions drawn from variations of internal magnetic field, obtained from Mössbauer studies of these samples. The decrease in d.c. resistivity due to substitution of Li1+ ions is attributed to increased hopping due to formation of Fe2+ and Ni3+ ions.

Notes: Abstract Structural studies of Na2O-V2O5-Fe2O3 glasses have been made from their IR spectra which show that vibrational bands characteristic of the vanadium-oxygen bonds in V2O5 are maintained in these glasses, but the addition of Na2O to these glasses results in a shifting of the higher frequency peaks towards lower wave number due to structural changes produced in V2O5. It is inferred that Na+ ions make bonds interstitially with isolated V=O bonds and VO5 polyhedra are destroyed, resulting in the formation of VO4 polyhedra through intermediate complexes. The variation of Fe2O3, however, produces an insignificant structural change in these glasses. The IR spectra of samples heated to their temperature of crystallization confirm the formation of a series of complexes with several isolated V=O bonds.

Notes: Abstract The effect of substitution of diamagnetic In3+ ions on the electrical and magnetic properties of Mg-Mn ferrites was studied in the ferrite series Mg0.9Mn0.1 In x Fe2−x O4 wherex varied from 0–0.8 in steps of 0.1. The incorporation of In3+ ions in place of Fe3+ ions resulted in an increase of lattice parameter owing to the larger size of the substituted ions, and an increase of d.c. resistivity owing to reduction of Verwey's hopping mechanism. It also resulted in improvement of saturation magnetization and produced a marked increase in the value of initial permeability, thus upgrading the bulk magnetic properties of these ferrites. These bulk magnetic properties improve due to substitution of diamagnetic In3+ ions,x, up to 0.5 only, whereas they deteriorate for a higher content of In3+ ions. The variations of saturation magnetization have been explained on the basis of modified cation distribution and their magnetic interactions. A large increase in the value of initial permeability has been attributed to its dependence onM s and magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant. A comparison of bulk magnetic properties with the inferences drawn from Mössbauer studies of these samples shows a similar trend. It is concluded that the substitution of In3+ ions,x, up to 0.5 in Mg-Mn ferrites results in the production of a hyperfine field at A as well as B sites, followed by ferromagnetic relaxation and paramagnetic transition for higher concentrations of In3+ ions. These variations have been explained on the basis of the effect produced by In3+ ions on the magnetic interactions, supertransferred hyperfine fields and domain-wall oscillations.

Notes: Abstract Room temperature Mössbauer spectra of xFe2O3: (1-x) (Na2O: 2V2O5) glass system showed that Fe3+ are present at both tetrahedral-“network modifying” and octahedral-“network modifying” sites. A Zeeman hyperfine splitting is also observed for x=0.225 along with a doublet, whose internal magnetic field (≅518±5 KOe) and isomer shift are found comparable to that of α-Fe2O3.
