Description: For many drugs, only racemic mixtures are available for clinical use. Because different stereoisomers of drugs often cause different physiological responses, the use of pure isomers could elicit more exact therapeutic effects. Differential complexation of a variety of drug stereoisomers by immobilized beta-cyclodextrin was investigated. Chiral recognition and racemic resolution were observed with a number of compounds from such clinically useful classes as beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers, sedative hypnotics, antihistamines, anticonvulsants, diuretics, and synthetic opiates. Separation of the diastereomers of the cardioactive and antimalarial cinchona alkaloids and of two antiestrogens was demonstrated as well. Three dimensional projections of beta-cyclodextrin complexes of propanolol, which is resolved by this technique, and warfarin, which is not, are compared. These studies have improved the understanding and application of the chiral interactions of beta-cyclodextrin, and they have demonstrated a means to measure optical purity and to isolate or produce pure enantiomers of drugs. In addition, this highly specific technique could also be used in the pharmacological evaluation of enantiomeric drugs.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Armstrong, D W -- Ward, T J -- Armstrong, R D -- Beesley, T E -- RR1081/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1986 May 30;232(4754):1132-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3704640" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: [Auszug] The following points deserve consideration in the industrial scale-up of a laboratory process. (1) Probably the chief requirement is uniformity of the potential difference of the electrode solution over the entire electrode surface. If this parameter lies outside certain limits, then undesirable ...

Notes: Abstract The suitability of a polymeric composite material for use as part of an anode structure in a cathodic protection system has been examined. The composite material was a conductive blend (volume resistivity typically 1.5 Ω cm) of carbon black in a polyethylene binder. A long operational lifetime for the material demands that the rate of carbon loss must be low. In the work reported here, electrochemical and in situ analytical techniques were employed to characterise the performance of the material over a wide range of anodic current densities in a variety of aqueous electrolytes. The predominant anodic electrochemical reaction on the polymeric material is CO2 formation in acid and neutral solutions, which causes loss of carbon from the surface and the development of a non-conducting layer of polyethylene. The characteristics of the reaction suggest that it occurs via the discharge of H2O. In alkaline pH, however, the anodic reactions are more complex. A high OH− concentration (pH 12 or higher) favours the formation of oxygen rather than CO2, particularly at low anodic potentials. The presence of CO3 2− in the electrolyte catalyses the evolution of oxygen at pH values as low as 9. The electrochemical formation of oxygen always occurs in parallel with the generation of some humic acid in the solution.

Notes: Abstract The anodic oxidation of the silicides and carbides of Ta, W and Mo in M H2SO2 has been studied. The rate of corrosion has been shown to be dependent on the solubility of the reaction products. Oxidation of the carbides of Ta and W produces a carbon rich surface. This may be an important factor in the enhanced catalytic activity for hydrogen oxidation shown by anodized tungsten carbide.

Notes: Abstract The extent of lithium and potassium uptake by bothα- andβ-Ni(OH)2 electrodes has been studied by atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy. It was found that lithium ions are preferentially taken up into the bulk of the electrodes. The increase in the end-of-charge potential on constant current charging in lithiated electrolyte compared with pure potassium hydroxide is attributed to the bulk incorporation of lithium into the Ni(OH)2 electrodes. X-ray studies have indicated no change in the phases present in the lithiated electrolytes either in the charged or discharged states. Cyclic voltametric measurements to 100 cycles showed no significant benefit due to lithium ions in terms of charge retention.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour of epoxy acrylic coatings (on tin plated steel) when contacted with aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid and a citrate buffer solution has been examined. The behaviour can be explained by assuming that the coatings contain defects which allow the solutions to penetrate them and contact the underlying metal.

Notes: Abstract A.c. impedance studies on sodiumβ-alumina tubes as used in the sodium/sulphur cell have been made at ambient temperature. It was not found possible to obtain satisfactory impedance spectra from complete tubes. However, polished annulets cut from the tubes and prepared with sputtered gold blocking electrodes were found to give reliable impedance spectra.
