    Description: The question of how the human brain represents conceptual knowledge has been debated in many scientific fields. Brain imaging studies have shown that different spatial patterns of neural activation are associated with thinking about different semantic categories of pictures and words (for example, tools, buildings, and animals). We present a computational model that predicts the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) neural activation associated with words for which fMRI data are not yet available. This model is trained with a combination of data from a trillion-word text corpus and observed fMRI data associated with viewing several dozen concrete nouns.     Description: Ocean acidification (OA) is predicted to reduce reef coral calcification rates and threaten the long-term growth of coral reefs under climate change. Reduced coral growth at elevated pCO2 may be buffered by sufficiently high irradiances; however, the interactive effects of OA and irradiance on other fundamental aspects of coral physiology, such as the composition and energetics of coral biomass, remain largely unexplored. This study tested the effects of two light treatments (7.5 versus 15.7 mol photons/m**2/d) at ambient or elevated pCO2 (435 versus 957 µatm) on calcification, photopigment and symbiont densities, biomass reserves (lipids, carbohydrates, proteins), and biomass energy content (kJ) of the reef coral Pocillopora acuta from Kāne'ohe Bay, Hawai'i. While pCO2 and light had no effect on either area- or biomass-normalized calcification, tissue lipids/gdw and kJ/gdw were reduced 15% and 14% at high pCO2, and carbohydrate content increased 15% under high light. The combination of high light and high pCO2 reduced protein biomass (per unit area) by approximately 20%. Thus, under ecologically relevant irradiances, P. acuta in Kāne'ohe Bay does not exhibit OA-driven reductions in calcification reported for other corals; however, reductions in tissue lipids, energy content and protein biomass suggest OA induced an energetic deficit and compensatory catabolism of tissue biomass. The null effects of OA on calcification at two irradiances support a growing body of work concluding some reef corals may be able to employ compensatory physiological mechanisms that maintain present-day levels of calcification under OA. However, negative effects of OA on P. acuta biomass composition and energy content may impact the long-term performance and scope for growth of this species in a high pCO2 world.

    Notes: Abstract Reedmergnerite (NaBSi3O8) has been synthesised hydrothermally from gels containing 10 wt.% excess SiO2. The degree of B, Si order increases with time at constant temperature and pressure. Complete order is achieved in 250 h at 400° C, P fluid=1 kbar and in 700 h at 300° C, 1 kbar. Lower pressures and/ or low water contents greatly reduce the rate of ordering. The ordering behaviour of reedmergnerite is insensitive to the composition of the co-existing fluid and this contrasts with the behaviour of albite. It is suggested that ordering takes place by a process of solution and re-precipitation.

    Notes: Abstract Electron and ion-probe microanalysis have been used to obtain zoning profiles for major and trace elements in olivine phenocrysts from a high-magnesian andesite from Shodo-Shima island, southwest Japan. This rock was previously thought to represent undifferentiated, primary magma. Some crystals have unzoned cores, while others show cores which are reversely zoned with respect to Mg/ (Mg+Fe), Ni, Mn and Cr. In addition, some Ni profiles show a normally zoned “hump” at the most central portions of the reversely zoned crystals. All crystals show normally zoned rims. The Li concentrations are constant throughout the cores of all crystals studied, but rise sharply, by a factor of up to at least six, in the rims. The Ca and Co concentrations are essentially constant throughout all the crystals. Mechanisms for producing the observed zoning profiles are discussed, and it is concluded that the reverse zoning was produced by the introduction of crystals into a less differentiated magma than that in which they grew. The reversely zoned crystals could therefore represent xenocrysts which were introduced into an undifferentiated magma, or phenocrysts introduced into a more primitive magma by a magma mixing process. The Ni profiles are used to estimate the residence time of these crystals in the more primitive magma. The following trace element partition co-efficients have been estimated for the olivine-groundmass system in this rock: D Ni=16; D Mn=1.1; D Co=4.2; D Ca =0.02; D Ti=0.005; D V=0.05; D Sc=0.2; D Na=0.0002. Studies of trace element zoning will become increasingly important as the new generation of trace element microprobes become available but a larger database of experimentally determined values for trace element partition coefficients and diffusion coefficients in crystals and magmas, and a better understanding of other disequilibrium processes are required to fully exploit the new data.

    Notes: Abstract Albite crystallized hydrothermally from gels of Ab100 and Ab90 (SiO2)10 (wt %) composition changes in degree of Al, Si order with time to reach a steady value. The steady values are influenced by fluid and gel composition as well as temperature. Albites grown in long experiments in the presence of NaOH and excess SiO2 are more ordered than albites grown in similar experiments with pure water and excess SiO2. This ‘catalytic’ effect declines as temperature is increased above 600 ° C. Partially ordered albites heated hydrothermally at 700 ° and 725 ° C decrease in degree of order. When heated at 600 °, 650 ° or 675 ° C the degree of order either increases very slightly, or remains the same depending on the degree of order initially present.

    Description: Application of broiler ( Gallus gallus ) litter (BL) to pasturelands in karst regions like the Ozark Highlands can potentially reduce water quality due to leaching of BL-derived nutrients and trace metals. The objective of this study was to determine long-term linear trends in drainage and soil leachate water quality under natural precipitation from a silt-loam soil amended annually with BL at three application rates (0 [control], 5.6 [low], and 11.2 [high] Mg BL ha –1 ]. Automated equilibrium tension lysimeters were used to continuously monitor and collect leachate from an undisturbed soil profile with a history of litter applications under forage management at a depth of 0.9 m for the 8-yr period from May 2003 through April 2011. Average annual flow-weighted mean (FWM) concentrations and loads of NH 4 –N, As, Mn, and Ni decreased linearly ( P 〈 0.05), while Cu and Se increased ( P 〈 0.05) linearly during the 8 yr. Nearly all water quality parameters measured were unaffected ( P 〉 0.05) by BL rate alone. Continued annual additions of BL linearly increased ( P 〈 0.05) the average annual FWM leachate Na concentrations relative to the unamended control. Results indicated that pasturelands with a history of BL application may continue to release BL-derived metals, such as As and Se, at concentrations harmful to health regardless of current management practice long after litter application has ceased. Land application of nutrient- and trace-metal-containing animal wastes in regions with underlying karst features needs to be carefully managed to minimize subsoil leaching losses.

    Description: An optically and geometrically thick torus obscures the central engine of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from some lines of sight. From a magnetohydrodynamical framework, the torus can be considered to be a particular region of clouds surrounding the central engine where the clouds are dusty and optically thick. In this framework, the magnetic field plays an important role in the creation, morphology and evolution of the torus. If the dust grains within the clouds are assumed to be aligned by paramagnetic alignment, then the ratio of the intrinsic polarization and visual extinction, P (per cent)/ A v , is a function of the magnetic field strength. To estimate the visual extinction through the torus and constrain the polarization mechanisms in the nucleus of the type 2 AGN, IC 5063, we developed a polarization model to fit both the total and polarized flux in a 1.2-arcsec (~263 pc) aperture. The polarization model is consistent with the nuclear polarization observed at K n (2.0–2.3 μm) being produced by dichroic absorption from aligned dust grains with a visual extinction through the torus of 48 ± 2 mag. We estimated the intrinsic polarization arising from dichroic absorption to be $P^{{{\rm dic}}}_{{{K_{\rm n}}}} = 12.5 \pm 2.7$ per cent. We consider the physical conditions and environment of the gas and dust for the torus of IC 5063. Then, through paramagnetic alignment, we estimate a magnetic field strength in the range of 12–128 mG in the near-infrared emitting regions of the torus of IC 5063. Alternatively, we estimate the magnetic field strength in the plane of the sky using the Chandrasekhar–Fermi method. The minimum magnetic field strength in the plane of the sky is estimated to be 13 and 41 mG depending of the conditions within the torus of IC 5063. These techniques afford the chance to make a survey of AGN, to investigate the effects of magnetic field strength on the torus, accretion and interaction to the host galaxy.

    Description: We present Gemini/GNIRS (Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph) spectroscopy of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388, with simultaneous coverage from 0.85 to 2.5 μm. Several spatially extended emission lines are detected for the first time, both in the obscured and unobscured portion of the optical narrow-line region (NLR), allowing us to assess the combined effects of the central continuum source, outflowing gas and shocks generated by the radio jet on the central 280 pc gas. The H i and [Fe ii ] lines allow us to map the extinction affecting the NLR. We found that the nuclear region is heavily obscured, with E ( B  –  V ) ~ 1.9 mag. To the NE of the nucleus and up to ~150 pc, the extinction remains large, ~1 mag or larger, consistent with the system of dust lanes seen in optical imaging. We derived position–velocity diagrams for the most prominent lines as well as for the stellar component. Only the molecular gas and the stellar component display a well-organized pattern consistent with disc rotation. Other emission lines are kinematically perturbed or show little evidence of rotation. Extended high-ionization emission of sulphur, silicon and calcium is observed to distances of at least 200 pc both NE and SW of the nucleus. We compared flux ratios between these lines with photoionization models and conclude that radiation from the central source alone cannot explain the observed high-ionization spectrum. Shocks between the radio jet and the ambient gas are very likely an additional source of excitation. We conclude that NGC 4388 is a prime laboratory to study the interplay between all these mechanisms.

    Description: We present an atlas of mid-infrared (mid-IR) ~ 7.5-13 μm spectra of 45 local active galactic nuclei (AGN) obtained with CanariCam on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC) as part of an ESO/GTC large programme. The sample includes Seyferts and other low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN) at a median distance of 35 Mpc and luminous AGN, namely PG quasars, (U)LIRGs, and radio galaxies (RG) at a median distance of 254 Mpc. To date, this is the largest mid-IR spectroscopic catalogue of local AGN at sub-arcsecond resolution (median 0.3 arcsec). The goal of this work is to give an overview of the spectroscopic properties of the sample. The nuclear 12 μm luminosities of the AGN span more than four orders of magnitude, L 12 μm ~ 3 x 10 41 –10 46 erg s –1 . In a simple mid-IR spectral index versus strength of the 9.7 μm silicate feature diagram most LLAGN, Seyfert nuclei, PG quasars, and RGs lie in the region occupied by clumpy torus model tracks. However, the mid-IR spectra of some might include contributions from other mechanisms. Most (U)LIRG nuclei in our sample have deeper silicate features and flatter spectral indices than predicted by these models suggesting deeply embedded dust heating sources and/or contribution from star formation. The 11.3 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature is clearly detected in approximately half of the Seyfert nuclei, LLAGN, and (U)LIRGs. While the RG, PG quasars, and (U)LIRGs in our sample have similar nuclear L 12 μm , we do not detect nuclear PAH emission in the RGs and PG quasars.
