Notes: Summary A series of new poly(arylene ether 1,3,4-oxadiazole)s has been obtained starting from a difluorosubstituted monomer containing 1,3,4-oxadiazole rings and some dihydroxynaphthalene isomers. The polymers have been prepared by polycondensation in solution and have been obtained in quantitative yield. They had inherent viscosity from 0.2 to 0.82 dL/g, showed good thermal stability (10% weight loss temperatures in nitrogen and air were above 460 and 450°C, respectively) and high glass transition temperatures (in the range of 197–232°C). The polymers were characterized by elemental and infrared analyses, GPC and wide angle X-ray diffraction.

Notes: Paper was preserved by deposition of poly(cyclohexene oxide) polymerised in situ by a photoinitiated cationic process. The efficiency of the deposition, as function of parameters such as the used catalytic system and the reaction time, has been evaluated by detection of uncovered cellulose present at the sample surface determined by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The percentage of uncovered cellulose detected was ranging from 1 to 40%.

Notes: High molecular-weight aromatic polyamides were obtained from 1,5- and 2,6-bis-(4′-carboxy-4-phenylenoxy-sulfonyl)naphthalene by direct polycondensation reaction in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone with various aromatic diamines, using triphenyl phosphite and pyridine as condensing agents. The polymers were characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and infrared analysis. The polyamides, obtained in quantitative yield, possessed inherent viscosities in the range 0.42-1.70 dL/g, glass transition temperatures between 245-310°C, and 10% weight loss temperatures in nitrogen and air above 435 and 424°C, respectively. Most of the polymers were soluble in aprotic solvents. The effect of the structure on properties, such as solubility, Tg, and thermal behavior, were also studied. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A series of new poly(arylene ether)s, containing naphthalene, pyridine, and quinoline units have been prepared by solution condensation polymerization. The synthesis involves nucleophilic displacement of aromatic dihalides with aromatic potassium bisphenates in an anhydrous dipolar aprotic solvent at elevated temperatures. The polymers, having inherent viscosity from 0.24 to 1.32 dL/g, were obtained in quantitative yield, have excellent thermal stability as shown by 10% weight loss temperatures in nitrogen and air (above 450 and 430°C, respectively) and high glass transition temperatures (in the range of 150-220°C). The introduction of quinoline moieties in the polymer backbone positively influences the thermal properties, such as high Tg/Tm ratios. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The accelerated ageing of polystyrene by means of 2-(2-methoxy-5-methylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole, under conditions reproducing the outdoor environment, was studied. The results show that this benzotriazole derivative appreciably accelerates the rate of photodegradation at the surface of polystyrene.

Notes: A preliminary X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) investigation on poly[4,4′-isopropylidenebis(1,4-phenyleneoxyethylene) diacrylate] samples obtained by photocuring on several substrates in the presence of a fluorine containing acrylic monomer is reported. Quantitative calculations based on F1s/C1s area ratios and C1s peak fitting show a noticeable fluorine surface enrichment that ranges, depending on the substrate, from 17 wt.-% to 59 wt.-% of fluorine containing moiety. The calculations also reveal the presence of a concentration gradient at the surface.

Notes: The degradation of four aromatic thermoplastics containing carbonyl, ether and sulfone linkages was performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer in both nitrogen and air environments, in isothermal and dynamic heating conditions. The obtained results suggest that degradations started by random chain scission under all the experimental conditions. Under N2 flow branching and crosslinking were superimposed on the initial process, while in air complete oxidative degradation occurred. The apparent activation energies associated with the first degradation stage were evaluated and correlated with the linkages present in the polymer chains. The obtained values indicate that the chemical reactions occurring under nitrogen are different from those in air. In addition, the ratio of the chain scission rate to the branching and crosslinking rates in nitrogen is dependent on temperature in isothermal experiments and on heating rate in the dynamic ones. A comparison with poly(ether ether ketone) is also reported.

Notes: The synthesis of new functionalised macromers containing perfluoropolyether structures (PFPE) is reported. They are obtained by reaction of bis-CH2OH terminated PFPE with isocyanato-ethyl methacrylate (EIM), giving rise to the formation of perfluoropolyether bisurethane methacrylate (PFEUMA) oligomers. The products are characterised by NMR and FTIR analyses. The thermal behaviour reveals two amorphous phases, corresponding to the fluorinated and the hydrogenated moieties, while a crystalline phase can be present depending on the macromer structure. The functionalised macromers are UV-cured in the presence of a photoinitiator and the complete disappearance of the double bonds is obtained. The cured films are characterised by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) confirming the presence of a multiphasic structure. Moreover the optical properties and the surface properties of the cured systems are investigated and discussed.

Notes: New functionalised macromers containing perfluoropolyether (PFPE) structures and methacrylic end groups were synthesised and used as modifying additives for acrylic UV-curable systems. Their chemical structure is Rh-Rf-Rh, where and with p ≈ q. Notwithstanding their very low concentration, below 0.5 wt.-%, the fluorinated macromers cause a dramatic change of the surface properties of the films, without changing their curing conditions and their bulk properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements showed that the macromers are able to concentrate selectively at the surfaces of the films, depending on their chemical structure and on the kind of substrate employed.
