Abstract We present a two-layer interface model for calculating the interfacial tension and adsorption of a solid A-liquid B-solute C system from the phase diagram and the thermodynamic mixing data of liquid alloys of the three AB, BC and AC systems. This model correctly predicts the isotherms “interfacial tension versus composition” over the whole ternary range where a solid and a liquid coexist. From this model, we establish a tensioactivity criterium for the infinitely dilute solute C at the solid-liquid interface. This is in good agreement with the measurements of interfacial activity in systems studied with iron, aluminium or zinc-based solid phase.
