Notes: Summary By the solution condensation of 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) with imidazole-blocked 2,5-bis[(n-alkyloxy)methyl]-1,4-benzenediisocyanates (Cm-BDIs) a series of aromatic polyimides (Cm-BP-PIs) having flexible (n-alkyoxy)methyl (-CH2O-n-CmH2m+1, m=4, 6, 8) side chains were prepared and characterized by IR- and 1H-NMR spectroscopy and their properties were measured and discussed in respect to the effects of side chains. Inherent viscosities of the polymers were in the 0.23–0.34 dL/g range. All the polymers were highly soluble in N,N′-dimethylpropyleneura(DMPU) and C6- and C8-BP-PIs even in CHCl3 at room temperature. UV-VIS spectra showed that the π-electrons are delocalized along the main chain. TGA studies showed a two-step pyrolysis behavior and in DSC Tg's of C4-, C6- and C8-BP-PIs were determined to be 184, 135 and 127 °C, respectively. Wide-angle X-ray diffractometry for as-polymerized samples revealed a quite low crystallinity with only loosely developed layered structure.

Notes: Two series of copoly(1,4-arylene-1,2,4-oxadiazole)s (co-PAOs) having n-butyloxymethyl and n-octyloxymethyl side branch were prepared by solution cyclodehydration of the corresponding precursor copoly(1,4-arylene terephthaloyl amide oxime)s (co-PAAs) obtained by solution polycondensation of mixtures of 2,5-bis(n-alkyloxymethyl)-1,4-benzenediamide oximes (DIS-TADO) and terephthaldiamide oxime (TADO) with terephthaloyl chloride. Thermal properties of the copolymers were investigated and discussed in connection with the length and the content of side branches. All the copolymers are crystalline.

Notes: To obtain an understanding of the low molecular weight character of wholly aromatic poly(1,4-arylene acyldiamide oxime)s (PAAs) having n-alkyloxymethyl side braches and the additional decrease in molecular weight during their cyclodehydration reaction leading to the corresponding poly(1,4-arylene-1,2,4-oxadiazole)s (PAOs), tautomeric structures of poly[1,4-phenylene-2,5-bis(n-octyloxymethyl)terephthaldiamide oxime] (C8-PAA) were 1H-NMR-spectroscopically investigated by using two model compounds: O,O'-dibenzoyl terephthaldiamide oxime (H-PAA-M, 4) and O,O'-dibenzoyl-2,5-bis(n-octyloxymethyl) terephthaldiamide oxime (C8-PAA-M, 5). In solution H-PAA-M existed exclusively as oximino isomer, while C8-PAA-M consisted only of imino tautomer and C8-PAA contained both the oximino and imino form, the former being dominant in composition. It was found that the presence of imino tautomer caused serious effects both on the low molecular weight character of C8-PAA and on the additional decrease in molecular weight during thermal cyclodehydration to C8-PAO, whereas the presence of oximino tautomer showed practically little effect. A discussion on the results is provided from mechanistic viewpoint. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: From imidazole-blocked 2,5-bis[(n-alkyloxy)methyl]-1,4-benzene diisocyanates and pyromellitic dianhydride a series of new rigid-rod polyimides (Cn-PY-PI; n = 4, 6, 8) having linear and flexible (alkyloxy)methyl ((SINGLE BOND)CH2OCnH2n + 1; n = 4, 6, 8) side chains were prepared and characterized and their properties were measured and discussed with regard to effects of side chains. Incorporation of the side chains onto the rigid main chain greatly enhanced the solubility and fusibility of the polymers, and melting point of C8-PY-PI was determined to be 277°C. The UV-VIS absorption behavior was independent of side-chain length. TGA thermograms revealed a two-step pyrolysis behavior, in which the side chains split off separately at lower temperatures. X-ray diffractograms showed that all the polyimides are crystalline at room temperature. Sharp reflections in small-angle region obviously indicated the presence of a layered crystal structure. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Poly(arylene-1,2,4-oxadiazole)s (PAOs) bearing flexible, linear side chains, 3a-c, were prepared by solution cyclodehydration of their precursors, poly(arylene acyloylamide oxime)s (PAAs), 2a-c, which were synthesized by solution polycondensation of 2,5-bis(n-alkoxymethyl)-terephthaldiamide oximes (DIS-TADO), 1a-c, with terephthaloyl dichloride (TPC). The length of the n-alkoxy group was varied from methoxy via butoxy to octyloxy. The reduction of the phase transition temperatures and the enhancement of the solubilities of 3a-c were greatly affected by the length of the side chains. PAOs with longer side chains, 3b and 3c, are nematic type liquid-crystalline polymers.

Description: Although it is widely accepted that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is key to obtaining business sustainability, there is a significant lack of empirical tests on the longer-term benefits of CSR in academic literature. The objective of our study was to examine the effects of chief executive officer (CEO) governance on CSR in service firms. We used CEO pay slice (CPS) to measure CEO governance and the Korea Economic Justice Institute Index (KEJI) to measure the level of CSR activities. CPS was measured using the compensation information of the board of directors in their business reports. The KEJI was obtained from the website of Citizens’ Coalition for Economic Justice. The sample selected from listed firms consisting of 260 observations was collected from 2013 to 2015 at the TS-2000 and the FnGuide. The results showed that the CPS has a significant negative impact on the level of CSR activities in service firms. Specifically, CPS has a significant negative impact on the level of CSR activities in the areas of human, environment, and society at a significant level of one percent. Based on these results, higher CEO governance is expected to mean lower CSR in service firms. This paper contributes to the field of research in that it is the first research on the relationship between CEO governance and the level of CSR activities in service firms.
