Notes:
Summary The neurosecretory cells of the supraoptic and paraventricular nucleus, the median eminence and the hypophysis in two-and-a-half month old rats were examined. The results were compared with the findings in corresponding cells, i.e. in rats' organs 7, 14 and 30 days following the thyreoidectomy or in thyreoidectomised rats bearing non-irradiated thyroid grafts; or in those irradiated with 600 or 1800 r before the transplantation. The results are as follows: a) after thyreoidectomy the neurosecretory cells undergo hypertrophy. 14 days following the operation 52% of nucleus supraopticus and more than 92% of nucleus paraventricularis cells have a diameter between 22 and 25 μ; b) after the thyroid transplantation into the anterior eye chamber of the thyreoidectomised rats the degree and percentage of hypertrophy are less pronounced; c) the hypertrophy of nucleus paraventricularis cells in rats bearing graft irradiated with 1800 r is more pronounced than in the supraoptic nucleus. Neurosecretory material is accumulated all along the axon, the median eminence and the infundibulum, and the amount of neurosecretory substance decreased in the neurohypophysis; d) the hypertrophy of thyrotropic cells and degranulation of somatotropic cells depends on the thyroid graft characteristics (irradiated or non-irradiated). The number of thyrotropic cells increases after thyreoidectomy. Cysts and thyreoidectomy cells are most numerous in the pituitary of rats bearing graft irradiated with 1800 r and sacrificed 4 months after the transplantation.
