Description / Table of Contents: Summary High-performance liquid chromatography with UV-detection at 254 nm was used for determining ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, and isoascorbic acid in plasma and erythrocytes obtained from healthy volunteers and from patients with coronary infarct, acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL), and acute myeloic leukemia (AML). Deproteinisation was done by a simple ultrafiltration technique. Dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) was determined after reduction to ascorbic acid with dithiothreitol. The separation system chosen allows the search for the stereoisomer isoascorbic acid. To exclude interfering substances which could coelute with ascorbic or isoascorbic acid, several other compounds present in plasma were investigated including e.g. the aromatic amino acids, glutathione, cysteine, and uric acid. The results reveal a drastic decrease in total vitamin C concentration in plasma and erythrocytes with a concomitant increase in rel. DHA concentration in patients with AML. In ALL patients, both the total vitamin C and rel. DHA concentrations were increased.

Notes: Epibatidine (1) is a recently discovered trace alkaloid found in the skin of a Latin-American poisonous frog. Its remarkably high analgetic activity is accompanied by high toxicity. Therefore, in order to tune its biological activity, a convergent and efficient synthetic pathway was sought to synthesize epibatidine derivatives with different (het)aryl substituents. The hydro(het)arylation of the key intermediate 7-azabicycloheptene (10) represents such an approach. The synthesis of 10 by a Diels-Alder reaction of an N-activated pyrrole (7) with ethynyl p-tolyl sulfone (6) and subsequent steps has been optimized. The crucial last step, the reductive cleavage of the vinyl sulfone 9, has been replaced by a high-yield fluoride-induced degradation of the β-silylated sulfone 12 to give 10. A number of structurally different racemic epibatidine analogs (16b-e) can be prepared by palladium-catalyzed hydro(het)arylation of 10 with iodo(het)arenes 15b-e in good yields.

Description: The cork oak (Quercus suber L.) is an evergreen oak that has the ability to produce a continuous layer of cork tissue which regenerates after being removed. Cork oak stands can be diverse in structure. Young stands are often regularly spaced, whereas older stands usually show clustering and can be mixed with other species. Farmers assessing cork value use a zigzag sampling procedure within a stand. In this study we compare zigzag sampling with two other sampling methods, fixed-radius plot sampling and n-tree distance sampling, using a model for the costs of sampling. We used data from two cork oak stands in Portugal as well as data from six types of simulated stands. We found that zigzag is the poorest sampling method, as in most situations it produces estimators with larger bias and larger standard errors than that produced by the other two procedures. Fixed-radius plot sampling and n-tree distance sampling produce comparable results; however, fixed-radius plot sampling is preferred because it produces unbiased estimators.
