    Notes: Simple spray nerve endings of axons with a large diameter (15 μm) were located in the stratum compactum overlying the myotomal muscles in the pickerels, Esox niger and E. americanus. Based on the location of these nerve endings within the interwoven collagenous fibre matrix comprising the stratum compactum, and on the lack of reactivity to cholinesterase treatment, it is suggested that the endings are sensory in function and may be used as proprioceptors. These putative proprioceptors may aid the pickerel in monitoring the position of the body, (1) during ambush prey capture where the pickerel must lie motionless with as little disturbance in the water column as possible, and (2) in counteracting unwanted hydrodynamic forces such as pitch or roll brought about by sudden stopping of forward movement immediately following prey capture. This is the first report of proprioceptive endings associated with locomotor musculature in teleost fishes.

    Notes: Mutual phase locking between two high-temperature step-edge superconducting-normal metal-superconducting junctions has been investigated using a two-junction circuit with a nonsuperconducting feedback path. The strength of the phase-locked state has been characterized as a function of locking frequency and temperature. Results are presented for a planar circuit as well as for a multilayer circuit incorporating a superconducting ground plane. The observed behavior was significantly enhanced for the circuit over a ground plane. Characterization of the phase locked state at 4 K yielded locking strengths as large as ||IL||/I¯c=9%, and maximum locking frequencies to 1.06 THz. The magnitude of the locking strength decreased rapidly with increasing temperature with complete loss of coherence occurring at temperatures greater than 35 K.

    Notes: We have fabricated YBa2Cu3O7−δ-normal metal-YBa2Cu3O7−δ step-edge Josephson junctions that fit the resistively shunted junction model with Johnson–Nyquist thermal noise. The I-V curves are well fit over a large temperature range for junctions of varying critical current values. There is good agreement between the fitted thermal noise temperature and the measured ambient temperature. This is strong evidence that these junctions are not dominated by superconducting shorts longer than the superconducting coherence length.

    Notes: We have used the squeezable electron tunneling junction technique for testing the electrical properties of the surfaces of YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) thin-film electrodes. As deposited and annealed, the surfaces of the electrodes were insulating at 4 K. Several methods were used to improve the electrical properties of the electrodes' surfaces including rapid thermal annealing, oxygen sputter etching, and thin Ag coating treatments. The greatest improvement occurred after a deposition of a 5 nm Ag coating and subsequent rapid thermal anneal of one set of YBCO films. Under these conditions it was possible to make a superconducting Josephson point contact between the surfaces of the electrodes. We think that the Ag acts as a normal-metal proximity layer effectively shunting the degraded electrodes' surfaces.

    Notes: An rf superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) has been made from bulk Y-Ba-Cu-O. The device displays quantum interference effects and operates with useful signal levels up to 81 K. The SQUID is formed from a ring of Y-Ba-Cu-O which is broken in the cryogenic environment and then recontacted. Estimates of the SQUID noise performance are given.

    Notes: A high-Tc superconducting bolometer has been constructed using a YBa2Cu3Ox thin-film meander line 20 μm wide and 76 000 μm long, deposited on a SrTiO3 substrate. Radiation is absorbed by a thin film of Bi with well-characterized absorption properties deposited on a Si substrate in contact with the SrTiO3. At 1.8 Hz the measured bolometer response to a 500-K blackbody is 5.2 V/W (820 V/W extrapolated to dc), and the NEP is 5.7×10−8 W/(Hz)1/2 . The impact of apparent nonohmic behavior at the transition is discussed, as are ways of reducing the observed 1/f noise. The response time is 32 s and is dominated by the heat capacity of the SrTiO3 substrate.

    Notes: A new type of low-energy ion accelerator has been developed. It includes an eight-storied Disktron generator, newly developed accelerating tubes which hold up to 4 MV/m, both single and tandem acceleration capability, and a compound negative ion source. The Disktron generates 3.2 MV with a dummy load and 2.2 MV with ion beams, and has a voltage stability better than 10−3 at around 1 MV with a corona feedback stabilizer or a generating voltmeter feedback stabilizer only. The highly stabilized voltage of the Disktron has particularly been allowed to form an ion microbeam of about 1-μm diameter.

    Notes: We investigate the nature of low-power nonlinear effects in high-temperature superconducting microwave devices by measuring third harmonic generation at 76 K in coplanar waveguide transmission lines of different geometries fabricated from YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films. The measured power in the third-harmonic signal changes systematically with film thickness, center conductor linewidth, and line length. We analyze these results using a simple model for a transmission line with a nonlinear inductance arising from a current-dependent superconducting penetration depth. This analysis describes quantitatively the observed differences in harmonic generation for transmission lines of different dimensions, and yields a single geometry-independent parameter (the nonlinear scaling current density J0) to quantify the observed nonlinear behavior. For the thin film samples studied here J0=3.0×107 A/cm2 at 76 K for all geometries investigated. These results provide the means to establish a lower limit for the expected nonlinear response of superconducting components of arbitrary geometry at microwave frequencies. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We evaluate dielectric tuning on nanosecond time scales in ferroelectric Ba0.3Sr0.7TiO3 thin films by measuring nonlinear harmonic generation at a fundamental frequency of 3 GHz. We compare the form of the distributed nonlinear capacitance per unit length C(Vrf) extracted from a simple model of harmonic generation in coplanar waveguide transmission line structures with the nonlinear capacitance C(Vdc) measured using a dc bias voltage, and obtain excellent agreement for temperatures in the range 235–295 K. This demonstrated agreement implies that full dielectric tuning can be expected in these ferroelectric thin films on nanosecond time scales, and also demonstrates that detrimental high-frequency nonlinear effects in device structures can be accurately predicted based on dc biased measurements. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The amplitudes of Shapiro steps are measured at temperatures up to 77 K for a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor Josephson weak link fabricated from YBa2Cu3O7−δ with a Ag-Au alloy bridge. The step amplitudes are found to be in agreement with calculations based on the resistively shunted-junction model when the Johnson noise of the junction resistance is included.
