Summary The reactions of niobium and tantalum pentaethoxides withtrans-cinnamic acid (HCA) and dihydrocinnamic acid (HDCA) were carried out in different stoichiometric ratios. The complexes of the type M(OEt)5−n(CA)n and M(OEt)5−n(DCA)n, (n=1, 2 or 3 and M=Nb or Ta) were obtained. Infrared studies indicate that both acids act as monodentate and monofunctional ligands,i.e. only the hydroxyl oxygen takes part in bonding to the central metal atom. The corresponding tertiary butoxide derivatives [M(OBut)5−n(CA)n] and [M(OBut)5−n(DCA)n] (M=Nb or Ta and n=1, 2 or 3) were prepared by the alcohol-interchange technique.
