    Notes: Abstract Reactions of Aluminium isopropoxide with monofunctional bidentateSchiff bases, such as salicylidene-o-toluidine, salicylidene-p-toluidine, 2-hydroxy-1-naphthylmethylidene-p-toluidine and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthylmethylidene-p-toluidine in different stoichiometric ratios have yielded products of the type Al(OPr i)2(SB), Al(OPr i)(SB)2, and Al(SB)3 (whereSB − is the anion of the correspondingSchiff base,SBH). Bifunctional tetradentateSchiff bases in 1∶1 and 2∶3 molar ratios [Al(OPr i)3:SBH2] yielded insoluble derivatives of the type Al(OPr i)SB and Al2(SB)3 (whereSB − represents the anion of theSchiff baseSBH2 andSBH2=bis-salicylaldehyde-o-phenylene-diamine or bis-salicylaldehyde-p-phenylenediamine). The newSchiff base derivatives have been characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy and molecular weight determinations.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurden Zirkonium(IV)-Schiff-Basen-Derivate in verschiedenen stöchiometrischen Zusammensetzungen über die Reaktion von Zirkoniumisopropoxid mit monofunktionellen zweizähnigenSchiff-Basen synthetisiert. Die Komplexe vom Typ Zr(O-Isopr)3(SB) und Zr(O-Isopr)2(SB)2 [SB − als Anion derSchiff-BaseSBH] wurden in fast quantitativer Ausbeute erhalten. Es werden Strukturen vorgeschlagen, die auf ebullioskopisch bestimmten Molekulargewichten und den IR-Spektren basieren.
    Notes: Abstract Zirconium(IV)Schiff base derivatives have been synthesised by reacting zirconium isopropoxide with monofunctional bidentateSchiff bases in different stoichiometric ratios.     Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Es wird die Stabilität eines unten eingespannten, oben freien Stabes untersucht, der durch eine mitgehende Druckkraft am freien Ende beansprucht wird und ein oder zwei verschiebliche Massenpunkte trägt. Die Ergebnisse der Rechnungen, einerseits unter Verwendung von Eulers Theorie für den ungedämpften Balken und unter Vernachlässigung der Drehimpulse, andererseits unter Verwendung von Rayleighs Theorie für den gedämpften Balken und unter Einbeziehung der Drehimpulse, werden miteinander verglichen. Es zeigt sich, daß in beiden Fällen eine optimale Lage für die Massenpunkte existiert, doch ist das Optimum im Fall von Rayleighs Theorie mit Dämpfung und unter Berücksichtigung der Drehimpulse weniger ausgeprägt als im Falle von Eulers Theorie unter Vernachlässigung von Dämpfung und der Drehimpulse. Es muß daher geschlossen werden, daß man im Sinne der Sicherheit der Konstruktionen mit Dämpfung und mit den Drehimpulsen sowohl der Balkenelemente als auch der Massenpunkte rechnen sollte. Die erhaltenen Resultate sind im Zusammenhang von Flugzeug-Tragflächen mit Jet-Motoren, von Turbinenschaufeln mit veränderlichen Querschnitten usw. von Interesse.
    Notes: Summary The stability of a clamped-free rod subjected to a compressive follower force at its tip, and bearing one or two relocatable mass points, is investigated. The outcomes of the calculations either using Euler's beam theory and neglecting damping and rotary inertia or using Rayleigh's beam theory including damping and rotary inertia are compared with each other: An optimal location exists for the mass points in both cases, however, the optimum is less pronounced with Rayleigh's theory including damping and rotary inertia than with Euler's theory neglecting damping and rotary inertia. Hence, one may conclude that for a safe design damping and rotary inertia, of the beam's mass elements as well as of the masspoints, has to be taken into account. The results obtained are of interest in connection with aircraft wings carrying jet engines, with turbine blades having varying cross-sections, etc.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary By using the Frobenius' method, the authors obtain the virtually exact instability boundary of the externally damped viscoelastic Hauger system. The interaction between the two types of damping, yields results paradoxical to those obtained with each type of damping considered separately. An optimal stability envelope, which for a prescribed value of internal damping and any external damping gives the highest attainable critical load, is obtained. The addition of external damping for a prescribed internal damping, raises the critical load at best to the above optimal value; further addition of external damping diminishes the critical load. The Ziegler's jump or pseudo-destabilization due to infinitesimal internal damping, is shown to vanish with the introduction of external damping. For large external damping, the Ziegler's jump approaches a negative asymptotic value. These paradoxical results provide a deeper insight into the complex interaction between the internal and external damping in polygenic systems.
    Notes: Sommario Usando il metodo di Frobenius gli autori ottengono il contorno di instabilità virtualemnte esatto del sistema viscoelastico Hauger smorzato esternamente. La interazione fra i due tipi di smorzamento porta a risultati paradossali rispetto a quelli ottenuti con ogni tipo di smorzamento considerato separatamente. Si ottiene un inviluppo ottimale di stabilità che per dati valori degli smorzamenti interni ed esterni dà il massimo carico critico ottenibile. L'aggiunta di smorzamento esterno per un prescritto smorzamento interno aumenta il carico critico al massimo fino al sopra citato valore ottimale; un aumento ulteriore di smorzamento esterno diminuisce il carico critico. Si dimostra che con l'introduzione di smorzamento esterno diminuisce la discontinuità di Ziegler e la pseudo-instabilità dovuta a smorzamento interno infinitesimo. Per forti smorzamenti esterni la discontinuità di Ziegler tende a un valore asintotico negativo. Questi risultati paradossali forniscono una più approfondita comprensione della complessa interazione fra smorzamento interno ed esterno nei sistemi poligenici.

    Notes: Summary The reactions of niobium and tantalum pentaethoxides withtrans-cinnamic acid (HCA) and dihydrocinnamic acid (HDCA) were carried out in different stoichiometric ratios. The complexes of the type M(OEt)5−n(CA)n and M(OEt)5−n(DCA)n, (n=1, 2 or 3 and M=Nb or Ta) were obtained. Infrared studies indicate that both acids act as monodentate and monofunctional ligands,i.e. only the hydroxyl oxygen takes part in bonding to the central metal atom. The corresponding tertiary butoxide derivatives [M(OBut)5−n(CA)n] and [M(OBut)5−n(DCA)n] (M=Nb or Ta and n=1, 2 or 3) were prepared by the alcohol-interchange technique.
