    Notes: A new method of determining X-ray scattering factors by dynamical interference is described. The theoretical background to the interference effect is discussed in detail and an expression for relating the fringe period to the structure factor is developed. The method relies on anomalous transmission and is therefore most suitable for measurements on nearly perfect crystals of high atomic weight. It also has the attractive property of being insensitive to slowly varying lattice strains. Applying the method to the 220 reflexion of silicon a value of 8.487 ± 0.017 for the atomic scattering factor has been obtained using Mo Kα1 radiation. This value is in excellent agreement with the author's previous results using the Pendellösung method.

    Notes: The 220 Bragg reflexion of silicon has been studied in considerable detail. By the Pendellösung fringe method we have measured the atomic scattering factor with an internal consistency of better than 0.1%. Particular care was taken to exclude systematic errors which might arise from elastic strain, X-ray absorption and X-ray polarization effects. The crystal was cut parallel to the Bragg planes at the points of observation so that its thickness could be directly measured with a travelling microscope. At the value of sinθ/λ corresponding to the 220 Bragg reflexion, the experimental atomic scattering factors (20°C) were: f = 8.478 ± 0.008 for Mo Kα1 radiation; f = 8.448 ± 0.012 for Ag Kα1 radiation, and f (Mo Kα1)/f (Ag Kα1) = 1.0035 ± 0.0007.

    Notes: The propagation of X-rays in an elastically deformed crystal has been studied using a ray-optical experimental arrangement. A single incident ray was selected from a Borrmann transmitted beam and was then diffracted through a thin crystal which was elastically strained by a temperature gradient. From the position and intensity of the rays at the exit surface it has been shown that for symmetric transmission, the plane wave boundary condition is maintained in any arbitrary but homogeneous strain field and that the migration of the tie points in good agreement with the theory.

    Notes: We used the wavelet transform to quantify the performance of models that predict the rate of emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) from soil. Emissions of N2O and other soil variables that influence emissions were measured on soil cores collected at 256 locations across arable land in Bedfordshire, England. Rate-limiting models of N2O emissions were constructed and fitted to the data by functional analysis. These models were then evaluated by wavelet variance and wavelet correlations, estimated from coefficients of the adapted maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (AMODWT), of the fitted and measured emission rates.We estimated wavelet variances to assess whether the partition of the variance of modelled rates of N2O emission between scales reflected that of the data. Where the relative distribution of variance in the model is more skewed to coarser scales than is the case for the observation, for example, this indicates that the model predictions are too smooth spatially, and fail adequately to represent some of the variation at finer scales. Scale-dependent wavelet correlations between model and data were used to quantify the model performance at each scale, and in several cases to determine the scale at which the model description of the data broke down. We detected significant changes in correlation between modelled and predicted emissions at each spatial scale, showing that, at some scales, model performance was not uniform in space. This suggested that the influence of a soil variable on N2O emissions, important in one region but not in another, had been omitted from the model or modelled poorly. Change points usually occurred at field boundaries or where soil textural class changed.We show that wavelet analysis can be used to quantify aspects of model performance that other methods cannot. By evaluating model behaviour at several scales and positions wavelet analysis helps us to determine whether a model is suitable for a particular purpose.
