    Notes: : Storm water runoff studies of three small basins (20, 40, and 58 acres) in the Fort Lauderdale area of Florida were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1974–78. The basins were homogeneously developed with land uses being: commercial, single family residential, and high traffic volume highway. Synchronized data were collected for rainfall, storm water discharge, storm water quality, and bulk precipitation (rainfall plus dry fallout) quality. Analysis of the storm water discharge data showed that most runoff was from impervious areas hydraulically connected to drain inlets. Regression analyses of the storm water discharge and water quality data indicated that storm loads from the single family residential area correlated strongly with peak discharge and length of antecedent dry periods. Storm loads from the highway area correlated strongly with rainfall and less strongly with peak discharge and antecedent dry periods. Storm loads from the commercial area correlated strongly with peak discharge and rainfall, and less strongly with antecedent dry periods. On a unit area basis, the single family residential area yielded the largest loads of nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved solids. The commercial area yielded the largest loads of lead, zinc, and chemical oxygen demand. Yields of carbon were about the same for the three areas. Constituent loadings derived directly from the atmosphere were estimated on the basis of bulk precipitation samples and compared with storm runoff loads from the highway and commercial areas.

    Notes: The effect of sintering on the mechanical properties of free-standing, plasma-sprayed ZrO2–8 wt% Y2O3 thick thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) was determined after annealing at 1316°C in air. Mechanical properties of the TBCs, including flexure strength, modes I and II fracture toughnesses, constitutive relations, elastic modulus, and microhardness, were determined at ambient temperature as a function of annealing time ranging from 0 to 500 h. In addition, some physical properties such as density and phase stability were also determined. Mechanical and physical properties increased significantly in 5–100 h and then reached a plateau above 100 h. An exception to this was the monoclinic phase that increased monotonically without forming a plateau. Annealing resulted in healing of microcracks and pores, and in grain growth, accompanying densification of the TBC's body because of the sintering effect. However, an inevitable adverse effect also occurred such that the desired lower thermal conductivity and good strain-tolerant capability, which makes the TBCs unique in thermal barrier applications, were degraded upon annealing. A phenomenological model was proposed to assess and quantify all the property variables in response to annealing in a normalized scheme.

    Notes: Current state-of-the-art environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) for Si-based ceramics consist of three layers: a silicon bond coat, an intermediate mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) or mullite + BSAS ((1−x)BaO·xSrO·Al2O3·2SiO2, 0 ≤x≤ 1) layer, and a BSAS top coat. Areas of concern for long-term durability are environmental durability, chemical compatibility, volatility, phase stability, and thermal conductivity. Variants of this family of EBC were applied onto monolithic SiC and melt-infiltrated SiC/SiC composites. Reaction between BSAS and silica results in a low-melting (∼1300°C) glass, which can cause the spallation of the EBC. At temperatures greater than ∼1400°C BSAS suffers significant recession via volatilization in water-vapor-containing atmospheres. Both reactions can be EBC life-limiting factors. BSAS undergoes a very sluggish phase transformation (hexagonal celsian to monoclinic celsian), the implications of which are not fully understood at this point. Initial rapid increase in thermal conductivity at temperatures as low as 1300°C indicates the sintering of EBC.

    Notes: Cylindrical punch indentations are performed to determine the effective modulus of a plasma-sprayed ZrO2–8 wt% Y2O3 thermal barrier coating (TBC) as a function of coating depth. Cylindrical punch indentations offer significant advantages over pointed (Vickers, Berkovich, or Knoop) indentations for materials that do not exhibit linear elastic behavior. Cyclic loading with a cylindrical punch clearly shows the TBCs to exhibit nonlinear elastic behavior with significant hysteresis that is related to the compaction and internal sliding within the plasma-spray splat microstructure. Also, the effect of a high-heat-flux laser treatment is shown to produce a gradient both in the effective TBC modulus and degree of loading/unloading hysteresis with depth.

To characterize synchronisation strategies in the tracking of auditory rhythm with rhythmic finger tapping, the adaptation process after unexpected step changes of an interstimulus interval (ISI) of 500 ms was investigated. Step changes of 2% (10 ms), 4% (20 ms), and 10% (50 ms) of ISI were applied to the stimulus sequence. Synchronisation patterns of 5 subjects were analyzed based on synchronisation error (SE) and interresponse intervals (IRI). A strategy shift contigent upon the size of the introduced step change was detected. After small ISI changes, rapid IRI matching to the new ISI was accompanied by temporarily enlarged SE values, which slowly returned to preferred SE values before the step change. Large ISI changes showed quick SE adaptations accompanied by a temporary overcorrection of IRI. Response asymmetry between ISI decreases and increases emerged, showing a stronger adaptation during ISI increases. A two-dimensional difference equation was formulated to simulate the time series of intertap intervals and explain the control process during IRI and SE adjustments. The system constants were optimized to minimalize the deviations between the computed and the observed response trajectories, consisting of the time series of SE and IRI. It was shown that a successful model fit using a linear two-dimensional difference equation was based on the size and direction of the ISI changes. MANOVA procedures showed that differences in equation parameters during small and large step changes were statistically significant (P〈0.05). It is therefore suggested that a uniform model accounting for synchronization responses to all step changes would require the introduction of nonlinear system properties.

    Notes: Abstract Corporate executives, at the behest of Wall Street, have embraced the heresy of upsizing short-term shareholder profits by downsizing the long-term work force. This restructuring of corporate America, which views the corporation as an investment organization rather than a social organization, has created an ethical quandary by removing from the equation a sense of larger-purpose. This paper proposes a new paradigm, LIFESIZING, to address the issues raised by this ethical quandary. The paper will explore the effect the creation of fictitious personhood (Corporations, Government, Wall Street, Unions, etc.) has had on the concept of personal responsibility and common good when responsible individuals are but transient members of such a legal entity. It will briefly recap the history of downsizing, the practice of treating workers as an expense rather than a capital asset, stakeholder theory, and the rise of a "me-first" culture. It will then define and apply LIFESIZING to both the individual and the corporation in an attempt to provide a sense of balance missing from current discourse.

    Notes: This experiment describes resorption rate, light and electron microscopic appearance of the implant site, and tissue distribution and route of elimination of radioactivity from carbon-labelled polylactic acid implants. Fifty-six rats received abdominal implants and were serially sacrificed at 28, 56, 84, 112, 140, 154, and 168 days. Urine and fecal output was measured for radioactivity, along with implant site and several tissues at the time of sacrifice. Tissue distribution of activity was negligible. Resorption rate of the implant was linear with 63.2% remaining after 168 days. Elimination of radioactivity was via respiration, approximately 29.4% by this route. Histologically, the implant was invaded rapidly along septal defects or slowly on broad fronts. Invading cells were characterized either by large double-walled vacuoles or by large accumulations of mitochondria and microvesicles adjacent to the implant surface. The long duration of this type of implant may be an important consideration in surgical applications.
