Notes: Abstract The gene encoding the Kell blood group polypeptide has been localized to chromosome 7q33-35 by in situ hybridization using a biotinylated 1.1-kb DNA fragment containing the 3′ half of the human cDNA. This assignment is in accord with genetic localization using antigenic variation as a marker, and strongly suggests that Kell antigenic determinants are part of the polypeptide chain rather than the associated sugar molecules.

Notes: Purpose - The paper proposes addressing the design and implementation of a web-based risk assessment system that enables remote project team members to assess the risks at the conceptual design stage. Design/methodology/approach - The prototype system is based on a client/server architecture and uses fuzzy logic and web-based technology. A risk assessment scenario is used to demonstrate the operation and benefits of the prototype system. Findings - The research found that the use of a web-based risk assessment system for distributed project team members has major benefits in terms of use of linguistic terms to express risk assessment, ease of communication, ease of maintenance, and greater consistency, among others. Research limitations/implications - There is scope for enhancing the system through the development of a risk management module, improving the user interface and making specific provisions for different project types. Practical implications - The move in industry towards collaborative working practices is supported by systems such as this. Risk assessment is an important area that requires the input of all team members, if evenly distributed. Originality/value - This paper has presented an innovative approach to risk assessment for distributed project teams. It will be of interest to all parties involved in construction projects, particularly those involved in risk assessment.

Notes: : Although evidence of modern recharge in the North African and Arabian sedimentary basin aquifers exists, it is difficult to determine the volume of recharge. Also, from the evidence of regional groundwater gradients, the flow within the aquifers seems to be appreciably greater than one would intuitively expect. A hypotehtical model embodying the characteristics of the aquifers has been used to investigate the likely significance of various possible flow mechanisms. It is shown that while dewatering in the unconfined area can possibly contribute to flows for a considerable period of time, the maintenance of water levels in the unconfined zone must be the result of modern recharge. It is also shown that recharge depths of less than 10 mm per annum are sufficient given suitable aquifer parameters. Results for various combinations of aquifer parameters and configurations are given, including layered aquifers and the effects of restricted oufflows. Comparisons are made using a “bench mark” example. The work indicates that there is little point in carrying out conventional hydrological balance studies in hyper-arid areas and that, instead, more emphasis should be placed upon good groundwater hydrographic data and modeling.

Notes: Chandrasekhar's derivation, from energy considerations, of the sufficient condition R〉1/4 for stability of a stratified shear flow, in which R is the local Richardson number, is amended to obtain R〉1, in agreement with the earlier arguments of Richardson, Taylor, and Prandtl(L. Notes: Abstract Aspartase, fumarase (Class II) and argininosuccinase are homotetrameric enzymes of native Mr∼ 200 000, and they all catalyse analogous trans-elimination reactions involving fumarate. Amino acid sequence comparisons have revealed five mutually-conserved segments of primary structure, indicating that the enzymes belong to the same family. Several putative active-site residues, e.g., histidine, methionine, lysine, and aspartate or glutamate, have been detected, and one of the highly-conserved segments was also found in an otherwise unrelated homodimeric Class I fumarase.

Notes: [Auszug] IN a letter in the issue of NATURE for July 12, Prof. P. L. Burns states that the power factor of certain dielectrics is decreased when a constant magnetic field is superimposed on the dielectric which is being subjected to an alternating electric stress. One would expect that on the Debye ...

Notes: Summary The small, finite amplitude response of a damped, internally resonant double pendulum subject to parametric excitation at four times the frequency of the dominant pendulum is shown to exhibit chaotic behavoir for certain values of frequency offset and dissipation. This is in contrast to Miles [1], where the driving frequency approximated twice that of the dominant pendulum, and regular motion was found to exist for all values of frequency offset and dissipation.

Notes: Summary A system of two weakly damped, nonlinearly coupled pendulums with (uncoupled) natural frequencies ofω 1 andω 2≅ 2ω 1 is subjected to a small, vertical oscillation of frequency 2ω≅2ω 1. The resulting motion (after transients have decayed) may be either a simple (rigid-body) translation of the entire system or coupled oscillations of the pendulums superimposed on such a translation. The stability of these two types of motion is examined and their parametric domains established. There are no Hopf bifurcations, in consequence of which neither periodically modulated nor chaotic motions appear to be possible (for weak excitation). The corresponding problem for a symmetric triple pendulum is shown to be isomorphic to that for the double pendulum.
