Equilibrium Studies on Aqueous Polymolybdate Solutions. A New Interpretation of the Potentiometric Data of SASAKI and SILLÉNBefore starting a new interpretation of the potentiometric data (Z, log cH+, CMoO42-) for the polymolybdate system given by SASAKI and SILLÉN we first explored which species are reputed to be warranted by other experimental methods and/or by theoretical investigations in a high degree: the “basic species” (0,1), (8,7), (12,8), (64,36), and (4,2) and their inevitably occurring protonated forms (1,1), (2,1), (9,7), (10,7), (11,7), (13,8), and (5,2). This “basic set” of species presents already a satisfactory description of the measuring data yielding an agreement factor σZ = 0.0066 at a level of the random errors of σZ = 0.0051 and a rather balanced diagram ΔZ(Z). From the residual differences between the observed Z values and the Z contributions calculated for the species of the basic set we derived, supported by ramanspectroscopic evidence for the existence of additional species and under adjustment to previous ramanspectroscopic results, the existence of the species (14,12) and its protonated forms (15,12) and (16,12) as well as the species (32,18), by means of which σZ dropped to 0.0059. While the (32,18) ions occur as subunits of the (64,36) ion composed of two equal moieties, the dodecameric species increase the basicity and thus by formation of MoO—H bonds the stability of the system. The interrelation between the protonation constants of the polymolybdate ions and the average number of terminal O atoms available for each negative charge as postulated for polymetalate ions has been experimentally verified. These results show for the first time a self-contained and detailed picture of the polymolybdate system free of contradictions.
Notes:
