Notes: Abstract Petrogenesis at Mt. Shasta is dominated by mixing of magmas and/or assimilation of wall rock, as is shown by petrographic, major and trace element chemistry, and 238U-230Th disequilibrium data. At least three end- members are involved in these mixing processes. Lavas of very young Cascades lavas, from Mt. Garibaldi in the north to Lassen Peak in the south, are characterized by a large range of thorium isotopic ratios, although series of samples from single volcanoes are characterized by approximately constant (230Th/232Th). There is a monotonic decrease in this ratio from Crater Lake south through Lassen Peak, perhaps reflecting increasing thickness of the underlying crust. Th/U fractionation in Cascades lavas, as evidenced by (230Th/238U)≥ 1, is in the opposite sense to that in most island arc lavas. This trend suggests that fluid transport, which is thought to produce uranium enrichment in island arc, is lacking or somehow modified in the petrogenesis of the Cascades lavas.

    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Measurements of uranium concentration and the 234U/238 U activity ratio in oceanic basalts which have undergone low-temperature seafloor alteration indicate that uranium uptake is a pervasive occurrence but that the various phases involved behave differently with respect to this process. Palagonite exhibits uranium contents 8-20 times higher than unaltered glass coupled with low 234U/238U, suggesting ongoing preferential leaching of 234U. Altered crystalline interiors of several old basalts have 234U/238U 〉 1, indicative of recent uranium exchange with seawater. The data also provide evidence for uranium sources with 234U/238U higher than the seawater value of 1.14. Manganese crusts on basalts of a variety of ages have isotopic ratios indicating that they either are recent deposits or also have experienced continuing uranium exchange with seawater.

    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: The uranium content of glass from chilled margins of oceanic tholeiitic basalt flows is generally 〈0.1 ppm, even for old samples with highly altered crystalline interiors. Such low values represent the original whole rock concentrations, although subsequent to eruption low-temperature weathering has added uranium, and other elements, to the crystalline portions of these basalts. Consideration of the K/U ratios of altered samples suggests that basalt weathering may provide the major oceanic sink for these two elements.

Description: The hypothesis that hotspots are the sources of many continental flood basalts is evaluated geochemically for the proposed Rajmahal Traps-Ninetyeast Ridge-Kerguelen hotspot system. It appears that the Kerguelen hotspot did not directly feed Rajmahal magmas, although it may have provided a source of heat for Rajmahal activity.

In:  Supplement to: MacDougall, J Douglas (1979): The distribution of total alpha radioactivity in selected manganese nodules from the North Pacific: implications for growth processes. In: Bischoff, J.L., Piper, D.Z. (Eds.), Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Pacific Manganese Nodule Province, Marine Science. Plenum Publishing Corporation, New York, U.S.A., 775-790, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4684-3518-4_25
    Publication Date: 2023-08-28
Description: Analyses of the total alpha radioactivity distribution in 31 North Pacific manganese nodules yield an average growth rate of 6.8 ( 2) mm /m.y. Samples from a single box core show almost identical total activity vs. depth profiles, regardless of nodule size or shape. A characteristic feature of many nodules examined is an apparent change (steepening) in slope of the alpha activity profile between depths of 0.5-1.5 mm. This feature may reflect a fundamental feature of nodule growth, possibly mobility of 230Th or its daughters in a regular way, interrupted growth, or nodule turnover. Near-surface decreases in total alpha activity probably result from 226Ra loss.

Description: Using radiochemical methods, the authors have measured the distribution of uranium, thorium, radium, polonium and protactinium isotopes from the top and bottom sides of the a manganese nodule from Station 20 of the PLEIADES Mn7601 campaign. This "apple" shaped nodule (6.5x3.0 cm) was laying on a bed of siliceous ooze (see illustrations). Successive thin layers of the nodule were carefully scraped from the surface of the measured area with a sharp surgical blade. All samples reduced to powder were air-dried at 110°C for at least two hours before analysis. The relative gross alpha activities from each layer were assayed by Alpha spectrometry using a thick-source counting in a scintillation counter.
