Notes: Abstract The spectral characteristics and the structural response of a swirling flowfield are investigated subject to a non-axisymmetric disturbance and a contraction imposed downstream. Two natural frequencies are noted in different regions of the undisturbed swirling flowfield, one is due to a precessing vortex core and the other to the most amplified downstream azimuthal instability. The downstream contraction usually causes compression of the central recirculation zone into two side-lobes, increases the dominant frequencies and forms a straight central vortex core with a high axial velocity. The dominant downstream instability frequency depends linearly on the inlet Reynolds number and on the mode of the breakdown. For the downstream non-axisymmetric disturbance, such as the passing of the turbine blades, the fundamental frequency is not altered by the disturbance and the oscillation strength of the downstream instability is greatly reduced as the excitation frequency remains unmatched with the dominant downstream natural frequency. Downstream azimuthal instability promotes the breakdown recirculation.

Notes: Abstract Swirling flows in three circular-to-rectangular transition ducts, each of them with an aspect ratio of 2.0 at the rectangular exit, have been studied experimentally. The swirling flows were produced by swirlers whose vane angles were at 5°, 10° and 20° inclinded to the incoming flow, respectively. Flow visualization experiments were made at selected cross-sectional planes in the transition ducts. Pressure and velocity measurements were obtained on the contoured duct walls and at the rectangular exit planes, respectively. The results show that the swirling flow pattern evolves into a skewed structure at the exit plane which, in connection with the wall pressure distributions, is asymmetric with respect to the centerline of either the top and bottom walls or the side walls. Moreover, an analysis based on the mean streamwise vorticity equation with the velocity data obtained immediately downstream of the rectangular exit plane indicates that the cross-stream Reynolds stress plays an important role in transporting the streamwise vorticity of the swirling flow into the surrounding fluid.

Notes: Systematic fatigue experiments, including both high-cycle axial fatigue (S–N curves) and fatigue crack growth (FCG, da/dN–ΔK curves), were performed on a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel in laboratory air and 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Specimens were prepared in three tempers, i.e. solution-annealed (SA), peak-aged (H900) and overaged (H1150) conditions, to characterize the effects of ageing treatment on the corrosion fatigue (CF) resistance. S–N results indicated that fatigue resistance in all three tempers was dramatically reduced by the aqueous sodium chloride environment. In addition, the smooth-surface specimens in H900 temper exhibited longer CF lives than the H1150 ones, while those in SA condition stood in between. However, for precracked specimens, the H1150 temper provided superior corrosive FCG resistance than the other two tempers. Comparison of the S–N and FCG curves indicated that early growth of crack-like defects and short cracks played the major role in determining the CF life for smooth surface. The differences in the CF strengths for the S–N specimens of the given three tempers were primarily due to their inherent differences in resistance to small crack growth, as they were in the air environment.

Notes: 2 Al3 and YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7. To investigate devices built from these complex materials we applied element-sensitive photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). Information about the chemical composition of the imaged sample can be obtained by PEEM via tuning the photon energy to X-ray absorption edges. To apply spectromicroscopy we acquired microscopic images using photon energies near and at the edges. Such images give the lateral distribution of a specific element. Microspectroscopy is performed by recording the intensity of the true secondary electrons in selected spots during a sweep of the photon energy. The main aim of our work was to observe oxygen-related defects and changes in the composition affecting the physical properties of the materials. Therefore, we applied both methods to micro-patterned devices using soft-X-ray synchrotron radiation and found that small local defects and chemical differences can be easily detected. Such defects and chemical differences are quite critical to the physical properties of the devices, since they simulate spurious effects thus influencing the reliability of the devices.

Notes: Abstract A thermal barrier coating system consisting of a NiCoCrAlY bond coat and cerium-stabilized zirconia ceramic coating was sprayed on to a metallic substrate. Ageing at 400 and 800°C for 100, 500, and 1000 h was performed. Microhardness measurements of as-sprayed and heat-treated samples were used to evaluate microstructural variations throughout the thermally sprayed coating after different ageing conditions. Forty readings were taken at both the bond coat and ceramic coating positions within the thermal barrier coating (TBC) system and adjusted by subtracting the two largest and two smallest readings. Both data sets were statistically analysed to assess whether they belonged to Weibull or Gaussian (or “normal”) distributions. This study has established that the homogeneity of coatings, at least as measured by a microhardness test, varies during service and, thus, may influence the lifetime.

Notes: Abstract Cyclic fatigue properties of a hot isostatically pressed silicon nitride were investigated at 1150, 1260 and 1370 °C in ambient air. The uniaxial tensile tests were conducted under various cyclic loading wave forms and frequencies. The correlation of stress-life relations between cyclic and static fatigue results was evaluated. At 1150–1370 °C, cyclic loading caused less damage than static loading, as evidenced by the longer failure time under cyclic loading versus static loading with the same maximum applied stresses. The cyclic loading effect was more pronounced in high frequency tests at 1260 and 1370 °C and might be related to the viscoelastic behaviour of the intergranular phase. Microstructural analyses and macroscopic cyclic stress-strain and strain-time relations indicated that cyclic loading/unloading may inhibit the normal accumulation of creep damage.
