    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung An zwei verschiedenen Arten von Calciumcarbonat (analytisch rein bzw. in situ hergestellt aus Calciumoxalatmonohydrat) wurden thermogravimetrische Untersuchungen durchgeführt. Die Kinetik und der Mechanismus der thermischen Feststoffzersetzungsreaktionen wurde unter Anwendung integrativer Verfahren aus TG-Daten ermittelt. Auch der Einfluß experimenteller Bedingungen, wie z.B. von Aufheizgeschwindigkeit, Probenmasse und Rechenmethode wurden untersucht. Die experimentellen Bedingungen haben im untersuchten Intervall keinen sichtlichen Einfluß auf die Ergebnisse; in jedem Falle hatten die kinetischen Parameter für in situ hergestelltes Calciumcarbonat wesentlich höhere Werte. Dies wird durch die Anwesenheit von wesentlich mehr Mikroporen in dem in situ hergestellten Calciumcarbonat erklärt. Der Reaktionsmechanismus der Zersetzung wird mittels Phasengrenzreaktionen mit zylindrischer Symmetrie erklärt.
    Notes: Abstract Thermogravimetric studies on two varieties of calcium carbonate viz., analytical reagentgrade and insitu generated from calcium oxalate monohydrate, were carried out. The kinetics and mechanism of their solid-state thermal decomposition reaction were evaluated from the TG data using integral methods and the effect of procedural factors such as heating rate, sample mass and method of computation on them were also studied. The procedural variables in the range studied had no marked influence on the results; however the kinetic parameters were marginally higher for the insitu generated calcium carbonate. This trend is explained by the presence of more micropores in the insitu generated calcium carbonate as well as the mechanism of its decomposition following phase boundary reaction with cylindrical symmetry.

    Notes: Several polyamides of p-phenylenedioxydiacetic acid (PDDA) were synthesized by the low-temperature solution polycondensation techniques. Six different diamines were condensed independently with p-phenylenedioxydiacetyl chloride (PDC) in a mixture of N-methyl pyrolidone (NMP) and hexamethyl phosphoramide (HMPA). The polymers were obtained in 80-95% yield and possessed inherent viscosities in the range 0.32-0.81 dL/g. The polymers were characterized by infrared (IR) and H1-NMR spectra. The solubility, density, crystallinity, and thermal stability of the polyamides were also determined. A model diamide (MDA-1) was also synthesized from aniline and PDC to confirm the formation of polyamides from diamines.

    Notes: The thermal decomposition of three commercial samples of carboxy-terminated polybutadiene (PBCT) resins was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at heating rates varying from 2° to 100°C/min. Kinetic parameters of the decomposition process at different heating rates were evaluated by means of the Fuoss method.1 The decomposition process and the activation energy values are found to be dependent on heating rate. Mass-spectrometric analysis of the decomposition products shows that the pyrolysis products of PBCT resins are mainly low molecular weight hydrocarbons: ethylene, acetylene, butadiene, propadiene, vinylcyclohexene, etc. The rates of evolution of these hydrocarbon products vary with the carboxy content of the PBCT resin. Based on this, a carbonium ion mechanism has been suggested for the thermal decomposition. The data generated from this work are of importance for a consideration of the mechanism of combustion of composite solid propellants based on PBCT binders.

    Notes: Composite solid propellants based on hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) have become the workhorse propellants in the present-day solid rocket motors. The other major ingredients of a composite propellant are the crystalline oxidizer and metallic fuel. As the solid loading of such propellants is as high as 86-90%, their rheological behavior is very complex. The propellant slurry needs to have reasonably low viscosity and a long pot life for better casting and, hence, for a defect-free rocket motor. The primary factors affecting the solid propellant viscosity are solid content, particle size, shape, and distribution. The present study concerns the variations of solid loading from 80 to 89% at constant aluminum cotent, variation of aluminium from 0 to 22% at constant solid loading, and the coarse-to-fine ratio of the oxidizer. The plots of yield stress, consistency index, pseudoplasticity index, and thixotropic index at different time intervals are drawn for all these parametric changes. Based on these rheological studies, the optimum ratio of oxidizer coarse-to-fine ratio, aluminum content, and level of solid loading have been determined.

    Notes: Several new polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) and N-phenyl PBIs were synthesized by high temperature solution polycondensation techniques. Three different tetramine hydrochlorides and one N-phenyl tetramine hydrochloride were condensed independently with p-phenylenedioxydiacetic acid (PDDA), 2,2′-[isopropylidene bis(p-phenyleneoxy)] diacetic acid (bisacid A2) and 2,2′-[sulfonyl bis(p-phenyleneoxy)] diacetic acid (bisacid S) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) at high temperatures. The polymers were obtained in 55-65% yield with inherent viscosities in the range 0.58-0.96 dL/g. Four model benzimidazoles (MBI) were also synthesized to confirm the formation of polybenzimidazoles. The PBIs and MBIs were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The properties of the polymers such as solubility, density, crystallinity, and thermal, thermoxidative, and isothermal stabilities were studied.

    Notes: Hydrophobic-hydrophilic interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of polyurethane and polyacrylamide have been synthesized. The IPNs have been characterized by IR, thermal, and mechanical studies. SEM studies indicate phase mixing of some IPNs. Solvent resistance and surface hydrophilicity as evidenced by contact angle measurements suggest that these IPNs could be used for biomedical applications.
