Notes: Irradiation sterilization is in wide use among tissue banks, for both hard and soft tissue grafts. Irradiation of tendon can impair its mechanical properties. Following implantation of a tendon graft, re-vascularization and resorption processes reduce its mechanical performance. Tendon with severely impaired properties may not be suitable for use as a load-bearing graft, e.g. as anterior cruciate ligament replacement. An important factor determining the extent of the reduction of the mechanical performance is the condition of the tendon during irradiation, especially the presence of water. There has not yet been a study of the effects of both irradiation dose and hydration on tendon mechanical properties. This study measured the changes in tensile mechanical properties, including strength and stiffness, following γ irradiation doses of 15 kGy (1.5 MRad) and 25 kGy (2.5 MRad), in the frozen state and following freeze-drying. The strength of the freeze-dried irradiated tendons was lower compared to fresh tendons, whereas the strength of the frozen irradiated tendons was very similar to that of the fresh. The tangent modulus of both of the freeze-dried irradiated groups were lower than the fresh tendons, as was the 15 kGy frozen group. The modulus of the 25 kGy frozen irradiated group was similar to the fresh. The general pattern of the results indicate that the two freeze-dried tendon groups were more affected than the frozen irradiated, and of the frozen irradiated groups the 25 kGy group was least affected. The results fit well with suggested mechanisms for the action of irradiation upon collagen; that intramolecular crosslinking and scission of the tropocollagen α chains occur when water is present, and α chain scission alone occurs when water is absent. lrradiation of tendons for use as grafts may produce minimal deleterious changes if the irradiation is performed while the tendon is frozen with water present.

Notes: Low-pressure plasma technique was used in the deposition of thin polymeric coatings upon a filter paper. Sixteen different monomers, including aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, nitriles, chlorine-containing compounds, and a silane, were used in the coatings. Most of the coatings functioned as water vapor barriers in different degrees, and the coated samples possessed wet tensile strengths anywhere from 3 to 34 times that of the untreated samples. Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy was used to study the chemical structure of the coatings.

Notes: Studies have been made of the γ-induced emulsion polymerization of styrene and comparisons made with chemically initiated emulsion polymerization. The polymerization proceeded smoothly to high conversions at 0 and 60°C, the reaction showing a high G (monomer) value. Complete conversions were obtained with total doses of less than 0.05 Mrad. In accordance with the behavior expected of systems having a constant rate of initiation, the molecular weight was found to decrease with decreasing temperature. The molecular weight and particle size distributions were narrower than those obtained in chemically initiated emulsion polymerizations at the same temperature. The radiation-induced emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate proceeded smoothly at temperatures in the range 0-50°C to give polymers of much higher molecular weight than these obtained from chemically initiated polymerizations at the same temperature. Complete conversion was attained after a dose of 0.02 Mrad for latices approaching 50% solids. The elimination of ionic endgroups in the poly(vinyl acetate) radicals tends to drive the polymerization from the aqueous phase, resulting in faster rates and higher molecular weights than are obtained from chemically initiated systems. Rates of polymerization were found to be independent of temperature and the molecular weight of the polymer to be independent of dose rate. Latices of poly(vinyl acetate) of high solids content were evaluated for latex and film properties and found to have improvements over commercially available samples in both areas, especially in clarity of film and scrub resistance. A number of acrylate and maleate esters were copolymerized with vinyl acetate in a radiation-initiated emulsion system. High molecular weight copolymers were produced after low dose.

Notes: Twenty-five organoboron compounds were evaluated for their ability to impart flame retardancy properties to a cotton twill fabric. Only those organoboron compounds in which the carbon-to-boron atom ratio was 4 or less imparted flame retardancy at an approximate 20% add-on level; if a halogen atom was also present in the molecule this ratio could be higher than 4. Washfast finishes with six different compounds were developed by either γ-radiation grafting of a vinyl organoboron compound or by chemical curing with hexamethylenediisocyanate, trimethylolmelamine or urea-formaldehyde.

Notes: The composition of terpolymers of sulfur dioxide, conjugated dienes and a methacrylate monomer which does not form a complex with sulfur dioxide should decrease in sulfur dioxide content as the concentration of the third monomer in the reaction mixture increases. The sulfur dioxide content of these terpolymers was actually nearly 50 mole-% over a wide range of reaction mixture compositions. A reaction route is presented by which the deviation of this system from conventional copolymerization behaviour is explained. A random structure of the terpolymers is deduced from the results of thermal gravimetric analysis of these polymers. A slight enhancement of thermal stability was obtained by terpolymerization.

Notes: Methyl methacrylate may be polymerized by free-radical initiators in liquid sulfur dioxide without incorporating sulfur dioxide in the polymer chain, even though methacrylate radicals and sulfur dioxide readily as indicated by electron spin resonance studies. An explanation for this anomalous result is advanced, and evidence for the participation of sulfur dioxide in the transition state of the addition reaction is presented.
