Notes: Abstract  N2O emissions from a transplanted irrigated rice grown on a Typic Ustochrept soil at New Delhi, India, were studied to evaluate the effect of N fertilizers, i.e. urea and (NH4)2SO4, alone and in combination with the nitrification inhibitors dicyandiamide (DCD) and thiosulphate. The addition of urea and (NH4)2SO4 increased N2O emissions considerably when compared to no fertilizer N application (control). N2O measurement in the field was done by a closed-chamber method for a period of 98 days. The application of urea with DCD and thiosulphate reduced N2O fluxes considerably. The highest total N2O-N emission (235 g N2O-N ha–1) was from the (NH4)2SO4 treatment, which was significantly higher than the total N2O-N emission from the urea treatment (160 g N2O-N ha–1). DCD reduced N2O-N emissions by 11% and 26% when applied with urea and(NH4)2SO4, respectively, whereas thiosulphate in combination with urea reduced N2O-N emissions by 9%. Total N2O-N emissions were found to range from 0.08% to 0.14% of applied N. N2O emissions were low during submergence and increased substantially during drainage of standing water.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurden eine Anzahl von neuen Kobalt(II)-Komplexen von 4-Benzylamidothiosemicarbazid (BTSC) und 1-(α-)Furyl-4-benzylamidothiosemicarbazon (FBTS) von der allgemeinen Zusammensetzung CoL 2 X 2 (L=BTSC, FBTS;X=Cl, Br, I, NO3 and NCS) synthetisiert.
Notes: Abstract A number of new complexes of cobalt(II) have been prepared with 4-benzylamidothiosemicarbazide (BTSC) and 1-(α-)furyl-4-benzylamidothiosemicarbazone (FBTS) which conform to the general formula CoL 2 X 2 (whereL=BTSC andFBTS andX=Cl, Br, I, NO3 and NCS). These have been characterized by chemical analyses and physical measurements. The tetragonal symmetry has been proposed on the basis of electronic spectral studies for all these complexes. The explanation for the slightly lower magnetic moments for cobalt(II) complexes has been sought in the possible presence of low symmetry component. The tetragonal radial parametersDq(E),Dq(A),Dt andDs and molecular orbital parameters dπ and dσ have been evaluated. The S−N, bidentate nature of the ligands and the presence of the various anions in the coordination sphere have been confirmed on the basis of additional Co−N, Co−S and Co−X frequencies in the far infrared spectra of the complexes. The nitrato and thiocyanato groups act as monodentate and are coordinated through oxygen and nitrogen atoms, respectively.

Notes: Abstract In a greenhouse study, methane emissions were measured from two diverse Indian rice-growing soils planted to five rice cultivars under similar water regimes, fertilizer applications and environmental conditions. Significant variations were observed in methane emitted from soils growing different cultivars. Total methane emission varied between 8.04 and 20.92gm–2 from IARI soil (Inceptisol) and between 1.47 and 10.91gm–2 from Raipur soil (Vertisol) planted to rice. In all the cultivars, emissions from IARI soil were higher than from Raipur soil. The first methane flux peak was noticed during the reproductive phase and the second peak coincided with the grain-ripening stage of the rice cultivars.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The formation and composition of cadmium vanadates obtained by the interaction of cadmium sulphate and different alkali vanadates (ortho-, pyro-, meta- and poly-) have been investigated by means of amperometric titrations of the reactants at several concentrations. The well defined breaks in the titration curves provide cogent evidence for the formation of cadmium orthovanadate (3 CdO·V2O5) and cadmium pyrovanadate (2 CdO·V2O5) in the pH ranges 7.5–8.5 and 6.5–7.5 respectively. The precipitation of cadmium orthovanadate has been found to be almost quantitative and the amperometric titration offer a simple and rapid method for the determination of vanadium(V) in solution at suitable concentrations. The solubilities of cadmium orthovanadate and cadmium pyrovanadate have been determined polarographically at 37°C and are found to be 1.90·10−2 g/l and 4.10·10−2 g/l resp.
4,10·10−2 g/l bestimmt.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The formation and composition of lead thio-molybdate obtained by the interaction of lead nitrate and alkali thio-molybdate have been studied by means of amperometric, glass electrode and conductometric titrations between the reactants at several concentrations. The results provide definite evidence for the formation of PbMoS4 at pH range 3.0–4.80. The precipitation of the PbMoS4 has been found to be almost quantitative.
Notes: Abstract In an experiment on methane-emission measurements from rice fields amended with urea, biogas spent slurry (BSS) + urea, and farm yard manure (FYM) + urea, three distinctive peaks in the methane emissions were observed at 15, 46, and 69 days after transplanting (DAT) due to the availability of readily degradable C-sources. In all cases, the highest peak was at 69 DAT. The steepest Eh drop to a minimum of -320 mV was reached within two weeks of submergence. pH ranged between 7.5 and 8.5. The combined fertilization (FYM + urea) plot showed the maximum emission rate of 4.86 mg m−2 h−1 with a total load of 49.44 kg ha−1 and was 2.3 times higher than (BSS + urea)-treated plot (22.08 kg ha−1). Grain yields in urea, (BSS + urea) and (FYM + urea) plots were 3.34, 2.94, and 2.85 t ha−1 respectively, suggesting that biogas slurry is a preferred source over FYM causing lesser environmental pollution without any significant reduction in grain yield.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the surface-wave attenuation in Cu-Pb-Cu sandwiches, in the absence of a magnetic field, agrees well with the BCS expression. We compare the temperature dependence of the parallel and perpendicular critical fields with expressions derived from the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We get satisfactory agreement, provided that for the thinner specimens we take the mean free paths in the proximity-effect sandwich to be somewhat smaller than the values found for monitor strips. This implies that some interdiffusion between the Pb and the Cu is taking place.
