Notes: Summary 1. Chiasma frequency observations in Delphinium showed an interchromosome effect which occurs consistently in a large number of plants. 2. An interplant analysis indicated that significant differences in mean chiasma frequency do not affect the direction or the degree of interchromosome correlation which in the present material was invariably found to be of the negative type. When the analysis was extended to intraplant level however, a positive relationship was revealed between the strength of the interchromosome correlation and the number of chiasmata in a cell, the relation tending to breakdown towards the higher extreme of the chiasma range. 3. It has been concluded from these observations that each chromosome pair is adapted to have a minimum number of chiasmata independently of others but the different pairs show a competition effect beyond this threshold frequency. The competition is relaxed after a saturation point is reached. 4. Evidence has also been presented which supports the conclusion that the threshold beyond which interchromosome effects occur may vary in different individuals showing genetically determined differences in their chiasma frequencies. This variation partly accounts for the extremely variable behaviour of different organisms both at inter and intraspecies level with regard to interchromosome effects.

Notes: Summary A new karyotype which is both viable and stable has been obtained in Delphinium following X-ray induced chromosomal rearrangements. It shows, on the whole, greater symmetry than the parental karyotype although one of the chromosome pairs was reduced to a minute size. The meiotic sequence in the structural heterozygote and the isolation of the homozygote having the altered karyotype in its progeny have been briefly described. The structural rearrangement has been found to be associated with a change in the growth habit of the plants, indicating a possible position effect.

Notes: Abstract Treatment with Actinomycin D has been found to induce chromosome breakage in the spermatocytes of the locust. The broken ends appear not to have the capacity to reunite or to restitute. The treatment with this chemical has also been found to affect the development of the potential spermatocytes so that they fail to enter meiosis. The expected meiotic sequence is found to be replaced by a mitotic division. It has been concluded that both chromosomal aberrations and the effect on development of spermatocytes result from disorganization of the synthetic apparatus of the cells.

Notes: Abstract LSD has been found to induce extensive chromosomal aberrations in barley. The drug also stimulated mitotic activity in cells of the root tips within a few hours of the treatment. The chromosomal aberrations induced by LSD appeared to be qualitatively different from those produced by ionizing radiation and various other chemicals. Most of the broken ends failed to reunite and there was a disproportionately large number of breaks in the region of the centromere. The seedling height was found to be reduced as a result of treatment, presumably because of the induced genetic damage.

Notes: [Auszug] A one-to-one relation between chiasma formation and chromatid exchange has been demonstrated by Brown and Zohary6 following their observations on heteromorphic bivalents and their anaphase separation in the pollen mother cells of Lilium. Further evidence which indicates a correspondence between ...

Notes: [Auszug] In the New Pusa wheat variety 797, meiosis is entirely regular except for the occurrence in some of the plants of one or rarely two small chromosome fragments in many of their pollen mother cells. Ahuja (personal communication, 1957), who analysed a large number of plants, found that the fragments ...
