Description: Seasonal variations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Northern Hemisphere have increased since the 1950s, but sparse observations have prevented a clear assessment of the patterns of long-term change and the underlying mechanisms. We compare recent aircraft-based observations of CO2 above the North Pacific and Arctic Oceans to earlier data from 1958 to 1961 and find that the seasonal amplitude at altitudes of 3 to 6 km increased by 50% for 45 degrees to 90 degrees N but by less than 25% for 10 degrees to 45 degrees N. An increase of 30 to 60% in the seasonal exchange of CO2 by northern extratropical land ecosystems, focused on boreal forests, is implicated, substantially more than simulated by current land ecosystem models. The observations appear to signal large ecological changes in northern forests and a major shift in the global carbon cycle.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Graven, H D -- Keeling, R F -- Piper, S C -- Patra, P K -- Stephens, B B -- Wofsy, S C -- Welp, L R -- Sweeney, C -- Tans, P P -- Kelley, J J -- Daube, B C -- Kort, E A -- Santoni, G W -- Bent, J D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Sep 6;341(6150):1085-9. doi: 10.1126/science.1239207. Notes: Abstract Near-surface atmospheric ozone measurements were carried out at Barrow, Alaska (71°, 19′N, 156°W), from January 1965 to September 1967. Ozone was continuously monitored by microcoulombmetric analysis at a level 2 m above the ground. Daily ozone concentrations near the ground varied from 7 to less than 1 pphm by volume. Highest concentrations occurred in the spring and showed sharp increases lasting from several hours to a few days. These sudden rises in ozone concentration correlated with storm front passages. The concentration of surface ozone from late spring through the sumer and fall showed less variability from day to day than in the spring. The lowest ozone concentrations occurred from late May to early June.

Notes: [Auszug] A recent cruise of the US Coast Guard ice breaker North-wind during February 1970 provided an opportunity to visit the region around the southern limit of the winter sea ice pack in the Bering Sea. The ice breaker was able to search out and select areas of open water in the constantly shifting ...

Notes: [Auszug] Soil cores, 2.5 cm in diameter, were collected from five sites in northern Alaska during September 17-20, 1970. The cores included organic and mineral material extending from the tundra surface to the level of permanently frozen ground. Core length averaged 24 cm ranging from 17 to 31 cm. The cores ...

Notes: Abstract Alternating current impedance spectroscopy (ACIS) was performed on commercial sealed Ni-Cd cells. A method previously developed in the literature was modified to determine the state of charge of sealed Ni-Cd cells by obtaining the impedance spectrum in a wide frequency range. The impedance parameters were sensitive to state of charge at low frequencies. A modified Randles' circuit was used to fit the impedance data. Appropriate modifications were made to account for an additional high frequency arc or a low frequency finite diffusion element. The effect of the state of charge on the equivalent circuit parameters was determined.

Notes: It is shown that the elevated temperature study of oxygen gas absorption by polyethylene resins is freed of the troublesome flow of polymer by the use of thin supporting metallic screens whose thickness defines the depth of the molten resin specimen. The influence of the screen composition on reaction rate is measured for several metals. The oxygen absorption reaction with the use of supporting Monel metal screens exhibits the classical response to free radical inhibitors and has the same energy of activation that characterizes the absorption reaction without screen. Using the device of supporting screens in a simplified oxygen gas absorption apparatus made from a modified Abderhalden drying pistol, we found that methyl branching predisposes to resin oxidizability in the expected manner. Unsaturation, however, does not correlate experimentally with oxygen absorption curve. In addition, a parameter related to molecular size, probably the polymeric endgroups, is seen to influence polyethylene oxidizability.

Notes: Standardized mixtures of powdered polyethylenes and lead peroxide constitute redox systems that ignite upon the surface of a hot plate after a time interval that is inversely related to temperature and to the oxidizability of the resin. The influence of antioxidants and of oxidation accelerators upon the lead peroxide ignition is identical with that upon the reaction of polyethylenes with oxygen gas at elevated temperatures. Methyl branching also has an identical effect on both reactions. Hence, plots of ignition time versus ignition temperature serve to characterize the oxidative reactivity of polyethylene resins. This solid-solid redox system is shown to have long shelf stability at room temperature, not to be subject to premature ignition induced by the presence of more easily oxidized contaminants, and to suffer the effect of carbon black filler by showing a more sluggish reactivity. The lead peroxide ignition test serves to distinguish among polyethylenes. It can be used to assay the antioxidative proclivities of antioxidants. It can be substituted for electrical dissipation factor measurements in following the hot mill oxidation of polyethylenes. Since this test differentiates among polyethylenes having identical melt indices, lead peroxide ignition time values can also provide a useful specification parameter in describing polyethylene resins.

Description: : MOST (metabolic optimization and simulation tool) is a software package that implements GDBB (genetic design through branch and bound) in an intuitive user-friendly interface with excel-like editing functionality, as well as implementing FBA (flux balance analysis), and supporting systems biology markup language and comma-separated values files. GDBB is currently the fastest algorithm for finding gene knockouts predicted by FBA to increase production of desired products, but GDBB has only been available on a command line interface, which is difficult to use for those without programming knowledge, until the release of MOST. Availability and implementation: MOST is distributed for free on the GNU General Public License. The software and full documentation are available at http://most.ccib.rutgers.edu/ .
