Notes: Conclusions Quite brief operation of the suction dredge and its pipeline on clear water permits determining the minimum value of the head being developed by a given dredge, and all subsequent heads during its operation with mixtures permit, with consideration of other factors (as indicated), determining the amount of solids being transported by water through the pipeline at a given time and during any time period in tons or cubic meters.

Notes: Abstract The structure of allografted cadaveric human kidneys (AK) was studied between 4 months and 6 years after transplantation. In AK which kept on functioning well until death of the patients from causes unconnected with failure of the grafts, a weak cellular immune response and moderate sclerosis of the intertubular connective tissue were observed. Cytological reconstruction of the epithelium of the proximal tubules consisted of the formation of numerous polykaryocytes with a hypertrophied brush border. This phenomenon (“proximal polykaryocytosis”) is interpreted as a manifestation of the regenerative powers of the epithelium of the proximal tubules of AK in the late stages after transplantation. Chronic moderate hypoxia of AK is a favorable factor for reconstruction of the epithelium of the proximal portion of the nephron. In AK with unsatisfactory function associated with the development of chronic rejection, not responding to treatment, an intensive cellular immune response was observed, with the development of coarse sclerosis, resulting in atrophy of most of the tubules of AK.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Boronizing independent of the phase composition of the boride layer and subsequent heat treatment leads to an increase in steel resistance to abrasive wear by not less than a factor of two. 2. The wear resistance of a two-phase boride layer (FeB+Fe2B) is approximately 1.25 times greater than the wear resistance of a single-phase boride layer (Fe2B) with tests on specimens cooled after boronizing in air. The wear resistance of borides FeB and Fe2B is similar; the greatest wear resistance is exhibited by a layer consisting mainly of boride Fe2B and containing 20–40% FeB inclusions. 3. Heat treatment used in order to strengthen the layer beneath the boride has practically no effect on the wear resistance of single-phase boride layers, and it has a marked effect on the wear resistance of two-phase layers; with water quenching it is reduced, and with isothermal hardening it is increased. The wear resistance of a two-phase boride layer is 1.4 times lower and 1.5 greater than the wear resistance of a single-phase boride layer after water quenching specimens and isothermal hardening, respectively.

Notes: Summary The authors developed a model of experimental cancer of the lungs in rabbits, induced with intratracheal administration of colloidal solution of cerium-144 fluoride in a dose of 25 μC. Tumors of the lungs were revealed in 30% of the animals between the 238th and 327th day after administration of the radiosubstance. Authographic and dosimetric determination of radiosubstance was done; the rate of its elimination from the lungs was also studied.

Notes: Summary A histochemical study was made of the glycogen content in the liver, cardiac muscle and lungs of rabbits at the initial period of chronic radiation sickness provoked by the intravenous injection of strontium-90 in the dose of 0.5 μC per g of body weight. An essential difference was noted in the character of the initial changes of glycogen content in radiation sickness caused by the irradiation with x-rays and strontium-90. In the first case the changes in the glycogen content may be explained by the functional disturbances, whereas in the second-by more profound derangements in the carbohydrate metabolism. At the height of the disease the cause of reduced glycogen content is the same, and, according to the authors' data, is to a certain extent connected with the increased activity of alkaline glycerophosphatase.

Notes: Summary Carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, as well as the activity of alkaline glycerophosphatase, cytochrome oxidase, succinic dehydrogenase, and succinic dehydrogenase, were studied histochemically in the liver and lungs of irradiated rabbits. The activity of succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase drops considerably in animals with acute radiation, sickness, whereas the activity of alkaline glycerophosphatase is markedly elevated. In addition, a considerable increase of the neutral fat content in the liver, with accumulation of underoxidized products of its splitting in the lungs. The amount of phospholipids is usually markedly reduced in both organs. The amount of glycogen in the liver changes but little; only during the first hours after irradiation and in the, dead animals is a loss of the glycogen store in the liver noted.

Notes: Summary An experimental method for producing pneumonia in rabbits is presented. A culture ofB. enteritidis gartneri was obtained from a rabbit having developed the disease spontaneously. This organism was used to reproduce the disease in 100% of the animals inoculated intratracheally.
