    Description: The installation and tests conducted with the laser Doppler and transit anemometer in the 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel are described. Using residual particulates in the flow field, a series of free stream velocity measurements were conducted which agreed to within 1-percent of predicted values for a range of Mach numbers, 0.2 to 0.85, and temperatures, 100 to 250 K. Measurements about a shock wave provided an estimate of scattering particulate size of 4 microns or less. The particle concentration is approximately 3 x 10 to the 5th to 1.6 x 10 to the 6th/cu m. Necessary isolation of the plenum wall windows from ambient air with slightly positive pressure of dry nitrogen gas to prevent condensation on the window surface was achieved. This was accomplished through the use of large enclosures fixed to the tunnel wall. A second method used an additional sheet of thin plate glass to create the dry gas pocket next to the plenum window. The installation of a laser anemometer in the National Transonic Facility is examined. The laser transit anemometer has been tentatively selected for the initial entry because of its compact laser-optics package.

    Description: The feasibility of performing Raman and laser velocimeter measurements simultaneously is demonstrated, and it is shown that the background radiation associated with the Mie scattering and large particulate concentrations does not saturate or distort the relatively weak rotational Raman signals. Under stringent conditions of low static gas densities and large particulate concentrations, Raman density and temperature measurements agree to within plus or minus 5% of the calculated values.

    Description: Laser characteristics of intensity, monochromatic, spatial coherence, and temporal coherence were developed to advance laser based diagnostic techniques for aerodynamic related research. Two broad categories of visualization and optical measurements were considered, and three techniques received significant attention. These are holography, laser velocimetry, and Raman scattering. Examples of the quantitative laser velocimeter and Raman scattering measurements of velocity, temperature, and density indicated the potential of these nonintrusive techniques.

    Description: An investigation in the Langley 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel has been conducted in which a laser velocimeter was used to measure free-stream velocities from Mach 0.1 to 1.0 and the flow velocities along the stagnating streamline of a hemisphere-cylinder model at Mach 0.8 and 1.0. The flow velocity was also measured at Mach 1.0 along the line 0.533 model diameters below the model. These tests determined the performance characteristics of the dedicated two-component laser velocimeter at flow velocities up to Mach 1.0 and the effects of the wind tunnel environment on the particle-generating system and on the resulting size of the generated particles. To determine these characteristics, the measured particle velocities along the stagnating streamline at the two Mach numbers were compared with the theoretically predicted gas and particle velocities calculated using a transonic potential flow method. Through this comparison the mean detectable particle size (2.1 micron) along with the standard deviation of the detectable particles (0.76 micron) was determined; thus the performance characteristics of the laser velocimeter were established.

    Description: Two velocimeter techniques were considered as potential candidates for achieving the flow field angularity measurements. The first was the fringe laser Doppler velocimeter, (LDV). A great deal of experience was obtained with this approach at Langley and the literature is rich with papers describing many experimental applications and system performance details. That is, many velocity flow field measurements were conducted with the LDV but not with high resolution precise angularity measurements. The second candidate considered was the two-spot laser transit anemometer, (LTA). This approach was not as extensively used as the LDV technique, but literature does contain experimental applications and system performance details. Again, a lack of high resolution, high precision angularity measurements is noted for the LTA. The results of the study suggested that the LDV and LTA tests and other efforts did not reveal any fundamental problems that would suggest that laser velocimetry is not a viable diagnostic technique for the National Transonic Facility. However, there are a number of engineering problems that need to be solved.

    Description: A Monte-Carlo type simulation system was developed to test concepts and associated algorithms proposed by Mayo and Smart (1984) for the extraction of two-dimensional flow parameters from laser transit anemometry data sets. The Monte-Carlo LTA simulation program models a flow field as well as the sample volume geometry of the LTA system, thereby permitting simulation of two-dimensional data acquisition in a three-dimensional flow field. The results of these tests on the proposed processing concepts suggest that the instrument is capable of measuring mean velocities to less than +0.15 percent error and flow angles to less then +0.3 percent for turbulence intensities of up to 15.0 percent.

    Description: Laser transit anemometer (LTA) measurements of a 7 degree sharp cone boundary layer were conducted in the Air Force/AEDC Supersonic Tunnel A Mach 4 flow field. These measurements are compared with Pitot probe measurements and tricone theory provided by AEDC staff. Measurements were made both in laminar and turbulent boundary layers of the model. Comparison of LTA measurements with theory showed agreement to better than 1 percent for the laminar boundary layer cases. This level of agreement was obtained after small position corrections, 0.01 to 0.6 mm, were applied to the experimental data sets. Pitot probe data when compared with theory also showed small positioning errors. The Pitot data value was also limited due to probe interference with the flow near the model. The LTA turbulent boundary layer data indicated a power law dependence of 6.3 to 6.9. The LTA data was analyzed in the time (Tau) domain in which it was obtained and in the velocity domain. No significant differences were noted between Tau and velocity domain results except in one turbulent boundary layer case.

The purpose was threefold: (1) provide a state-of-the-art overview; (2) provide a forum for industry, universities, and government agencies to address problems in developing useful and productive flow visualization and laser velocimetry measurement techniques; and (3) provide discussion of recent developments and applications of flow visualization and laser velocimetry measurement techniques and instrumentation systems for wind tunnels including the 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel.
