    Description: Changes in the Earth’s gravity fi eld are caused by the redistribution of mass within the Earth and on or above its surface.While previous studies [Tapley, 2004; Wahr, 2004] showed that the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission, executed by NASA,had successfully determined oceanic mass redistribution, the relative motions between two GRACE satellites caused by the 2004 Sumatra tsunami is still uncertain. This present study combines a numerical model of the tsunami and GRACE orbit data to estimate the realistic effect of oceanic mass redistribution on the inter-satellite range-rate change between two GRACE satellites.The GRACE mission is designed to map out the Earth’s gravity field to high accuracy. Instead of measuring the Earth gravity field or mass variations directly, GRACE estimates a set of spherical harmonic coefficients denoting the Earth gravity fi eld each month by measuring range changes between two spacecrafts [Chambers et al., 2004]. The aftermath of this study has shown that the sea surface height anomaly due to the 2004 Sumatra tsunami can cause GRACE inter-satellite range-rate change (i.e., the small relative motions between twin GRACE satellites).When the GRACE trajectories are near the tsunami regions, the range-rate variations are large enough to be observed by GRACE. On 26 December 2004, the fourth strongest earthquake over the past century occurred in the Indian Ocean off the western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Measuring 9.0 in magnitude, the earthquake generated a massive tsunami that struck the Indian Ocean countries and Somalia.The sudden and violent vertical displacement of the seafl oor caused a disturbance to the overlying water column that propagated rapidly across the whole Indian Ocean.As the tsunami reached shallow water, the height of the wave drastically increased and produced huge inundations and runup heights of up to a few tens of meters.

    Notes: Abstract. Ambiguity decorrelation is a useful technique for rapid integer ambiguity fixing. It plays an important role in the least-squares ambiguity decorrelation adjustment (Lambda) method. An approach to multi-dimension ambiguity decorrelation is proposed by the introduction of a new concept: united ambiguity decorrelation. It is found that united ambiguity decorrelation can provide a rapid and effective route to ambiguity decorrelation. An approach to united ambiguity decorrelation, the HL process, is described in detail. The HL process performs very well in high-dimension ambiguity decorrelation tests.

    Notes: Abstract. In this contribution we introduce the concept of multiresolution analysis (MRA) and give an explanation of the relationship between MRA and orthonormal wavelet basis. The construction of the orthonormal B-spline wavelet bases is described in detail. We extend the B-splines to `non-integral order' cases and thus obtain a new family of orthonormal wavelet bases for the space L 2(R). Some good properties of the new wavelets are demonstrated. The new wavelet family gives satisfactory performances in our research projects including seismic signal compression and gravity tide data processing.

    Notes: Abstract To estimate the loading correction, the convolution integral of tidal height with gravity Green's function is usually adopted. Therefore, two kinds of error sources should be discussed, i.e. errors produced by different earth models and errors due to the inaccuracy of the cotidal maps. Thus, the effect of different earth models on tidal correction was estimated by using different loading Love numbers and gravity Green function obtained on the basis of two different earth models, G-B and 1066 model. We also calculated the error caused by Schwidersky's cotidal map, by assuming the error of average tidal height to be 5 cm in 1°×1° grids, but yet the effect coming from the errors of local cotidal maps had not been taken into consideration in this work. In carrying out this calculation, the results of tidal height errors in adjacent ocean around station, harmonic coefficient errors in open ocean and a truncation error are discussed respectively.

    Notes: Abstract The field-cooled magnetization of high-T c superconducting ceramics measured in low magnetic fields exhibits the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME), i.e., the diamagnetic signal initially increases with decrease in temperature but reaches a maximum at temperatureT d and later decreases with decrease in temperature. Even in some samples the signal is ultimately able to transform inversely into a paramagnetic regime once the sample is cooled below a temperatureT p as long as the applied field is sufficiently small. This PME has been observed in various high-T c cuprates and is explained by disparate aspects. An anisotropic model, in which the granular superconductors are assumed to be ideally anisotropic, was first alternatively proposed in the present work so as to theoretically account for this effect. On the other hand, an isotropic model, suitable for granular superconductors with randomly oriented grains, was proposed to deal with the samples prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction method. The anomalous magnetization behavior in the present model was demonstrated to be the superposition of the diamagnetic signal, which occurs as a result of the intragranular shielding currents, over the paramagnetic one due to the induction of the intergranular component induced by these currents where the intergranular one behaved as the efective pinning centers. The PME was demonstrated by this model to exist parasitically in granular superconductors. This intergranular effect is therefore worthy of remark when evaluating the volume fraction of superconductivity for the samples from the Meissner signal, in particular, at a low magnetic field.

    Notes: Abstract High- T c YBa2Cu4O8 (124) thin films have been made by d.c. magnetron sputtering deposition on (100) MgO substrates. The effect of several processing variables, including the ratio of oxygen to argon, total pressure, and substrate temperature, on the superconducting properties of the thin films, were systematically investigated. The as-prepared films annealed in flowing oxygen at 800°C for 4 h under ambient pressure obtained nearly phase-pure 124 and exhibited superconducting onset transition at 75 K.

    Description: Distinct translational initiation mechanisms between prokaryotes and eukaryotes limit the exploitation of prokaryotic riboswitch repertoire for regulatory RNA circuit construction in mammalian application. Here, we explored programmed ribosomal frameshifting (PRF) as the regulatory gene expression platform for engineered ligand-responsive RNA devices in higher eukaryotes. Regulation was enabled by designed ligand-dependent conformational rearrangements of the two cis-acting RNA motifs of opposite activity in -1 PRF. Particularly, RNA elements responsive to trans-acting ligands can be tailored to modify co-translational RNA refolding dynamics of a hairpin upstream of frameshifting site to achieve reversible and adjustable -1 PRF attenuating activity. Combined with a ligand-responsive stimulator, synthetic RNA devices for synergetic translational-elongation control of gene expression can be constructed. Due to the similarity between co-transcriptional RNA hairpin folding and co-translational RNA hairpin refolding, the RNA-responsive ligand repertoire provided in prokaryotic systems thus becomes accessible to gene-regulatory circuit construction for synthetic biology application in mammalian cells.

    Description: Galectin-3 is a ubiquitous lectin exerting multiple cellular functions such as RNA splicing, protein trafficking and apoptosis. Its expression is positively correlated with the poor prognosis in lung cancer patients. Galectin-3 can promote cancer progression through its effects on cell proliferation, cell survival or cancer metastasis. However, the role of galectin-3 in the regulation of cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) is still unclear. Here, we investigated the hypothesis that galectin-3 might regulate lung CSCs via the EGF receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway. In our study, galectin-3 facilitated EGFR activation and enhanced the sphere formation activity of lung cancer cells. Furthermore, galectin-3 promoted Sox2 expression in an EGFR activation-dependent manner; importantly, forced expression of Sox2 blunted the effect of galectin-3 knockdown on lung cancer sphere formation ability. These results suggest that galectin-3 promotes EGFR activation leading to the upregulation of Sox2 expression and lung CSCs properties. Moreover, we showed that the carbohydrate-binding activity of galectin-3 was important for the regulation of EGFR activation, Sox2 expression and sphere formation. We have recently reported that c-Myc is a transcriptional activator of Sox2. We further found that galectin-3 enhanced c-Myc protein stability leading to increased c-Myc binding to the Sox2 gene promoter. We also examined the effect of the stemness factors, Oct4, Nanog and Sox2 on the expression of galectin-3. We found that Oct4 enhanced galectin-3 expression. Our results together suggest that galectin-3 enhances lung cancer stemness through the EGFR/c-Myc/Sox2 axis; Oct4, in turn, promotes galectin-3 expression, forming a positive regulatory loop in lung CSCs.
