Notes: Abstract The maximum principle for subharmonic functions is used to obtain upper bounds for the gradient in the Neumann problem of potential theory. These bounds, which concern a curvilinear strip domain having nonzero boundary data only on an end, entail an exponential decay of the gradient magnitude with distance from that end.

Notes: Summary Integral inequalities for quadratic functionals arising in plane elasticity and two-dimensional potential theory are discussed and related. Information on the optimal constants (which depend on the domain geometry) is obtained through consideration of associated eigenvalue problems.

Notes: Abstract Spatial decay estimates for the solution of the heat equation, similar to those obtained by other authors using energy inequalities, are established through use of the maximum principle.

Notes: Summary A class of mixed boundary-value problems is formulated for a linear elastic material subject to the internal constraint of inextensibility in a given direction. Due to the constraint, the usual prescription of boundary data has to be modified. A uniqueness theorem is established. For the particular cases of homogeneous isotropic and transversely isotropic materials, this theorem provides necessary and sufficient conditions for uniqueness of solution to the mixed problems posed.

Notes: Abstract Methods involving energy-decay inequalities are applied in investigating Saint-Venant's principle for the planproblem of linear elastostatics for a wide class of anisotropic media. A lower bound (in terms of the elastic constants) is obtained for the rate of exponential decay of stresses and this is compared with the known result for the isotropic case.

Notes: Abstract Plane deformations of a rectangular strip, composed of an homogeneous fully anisotropic linearly elastic material, are considered. The strip is in equilibrium under the action of end loads, with the lateral sides traction-free. Two conservation properties for certain cross-sectional stress measures are established, generalizing previously known results for the isotropic case. It is noteworthy that in the first of these conservation laws only one of the off-axis elastic constants appears explicitly while in the second only the opposite off-axis constant appears explicitly. Such conservation properties are useful in assessing the influence of material anisotropy on Saint-Venant's principle, as well as in establishing convexity properties for cross-sectional stress measures. In particular, it is anticipated that the results should be useful in determining the extent of edge effects in the off-axis testing of anisotropic and composite materials.

Notes: Abstract The large deformation torsion problem for an elastic circular cylinder subject to prescribed twisting moments at its ends is examined for a particular homogeneous isotropic compressible material, namely the Blatz-Ko material. For this material, the displacement equations of equilibrium in three-dimensional elastostatics can lose ellipticity at sufficiently large deformations. For the torsion problem, it is shown that this occurs when the prescribed torque reaches a critical value. For values of the twisting moment greater than this critical value, there is an axial core of the cylinder on which ellipticity holds, surrounded by an annular region where loss of ellipticity has occurred. The physical implications in terms of localized shear bands are briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this research is to investigate the simple torsion problem for a solid circular cylinder composed of isotropic hyperelastic incompressible materials with limiting chain extensibility. Three popular models that account for hardening at large deformations are examined. These models involve a strain-energy density which depends only on the first invariant of the Cauchy–Green tensor. In the limit as a polymeric chain extensibility tends to infinity, all of these models reduce to the classical neo-Hookean form. The main mechanical quantities of interest in the torsion problem are obtained in closed form. In this way, it is shown that the torsional response of all three materials is similar. While the predictions of the models agree qualitatively with experimental data, the quantitative agreement is poor as is the case for the neo-Hookean material. In fact, by using a global universal relation, it is shown that the experimental data cannot be predicted quantitatively by any strain-energy density which depends solely on the first invariant. It is shown that a modification of the strain energies to include a term linear in the second invariant can be used to remedy this defect. Whether the modified strain-energies, which reflect material hardening, are a feasible alternative to the classic Mooney–Rivlin model remains an open question which can be resolved only by large strain experiments.

Notes: Abstract Upper and lower bounds are derived for the shear stress as it is determined by Saint-Venant's theory of flexure, and used to establish the asymptotic character of the classical Strength of Materials formula in the limit of vanishing thickness.
