Notes: Summary Heart rates and activity were monitored over 24 h in unrestrained, incubating Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) exposed to natural conditions in the colony. Heart rate (HR in bpm) increased linearly with wind speed (w; range 0–19 m/s): HR = 85.8+1.35 w, but was unrelated (P〉0.05) to temperature (-2.5°–6°C), humidity (37%–100%) cloud cover (0–8/8) and estimated solar radiation (0–12). Wind-induced heat loss was apparently compensated to a large degree by increased metabolic activity. Activity (A) measured as frequency of standing per hour, decreased linearly with temperature (t) and wind speed (w): A = 1.651−0.033w−0.090t. After correcting for meteorological influences, heart rate and bird activity showed no diurnal periodicity. When incubating, metabolism and activity of Adélie penguins appear to be mainly governed by climatic variations.

Notes: Abstract Using the equivalence between Feyman's and Bogolubov's variational principle, we discuss in the formalism of Hamiltonian quantum mechanics an improved upper bound for the free energy which has been given recently by Zeile using path integral methods. We show that Zeile's variational principle does not guarantee a thermodynamically consistent description.

Notes: Abstract In this contribution we use a generalization of Bogoljubov's variational principle, in order to develop a molecular field theory of the Hubbard model, which becomes asymptotically exact in the strong coupling limit. For this purpose the Hamiltonian is rotated by a unitary two-particle transformation in a way which was previously introduced by Kapustin, before the variational principle is applied.

Notes: Abstract From a new variational approach to the Hubbard model, communicated previously [1], we derive the magnetic strong-coupling properties for the half filled band case of the Hubbard model in simple cubic lattices. The transition temperature from an AB-antiferromagnetic to a paramagnetic state, the sublattice magnetization and the localization of magnetic moments are investigated in detail. Near the strong coupling limit the results become asymptotically exact in a molecular field sense but they look reasonable even outside this asymptotic region.

Description / Table of Contents: Thermogravimetric method for investigating the solid/gas and melt/gas equilibria in sulphate systems of corrosion-chemical importanceThe authors describe a micro-thermogravimetric method which permits the determination of the phase zones of sulphate systems as a function of temperature and of the SO3-partial pressure. At the Me2SO4—SO3 (Me = Na, K) system, the existence limits of the bi-variant melt and the mono-variant equilibria Me2SO4(solid)-melt and Me2SO4(solid)-Me2S2O7(solid) are determined. Water vapour is dissolved in the melt phases investigated because the existence limits of the latter are modified by the vapour.

Notes: Abstract Using sequences of the ribosomal second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2), PCR primers were designed for the differentiation of the gastrointestinal nematode genera Ostertagia, Cooperia, Nematodirus, Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus. Single eggs or larvae from faeces could be differentiated without previous DNA extraction. Quantification of the PCR result proved to be difficult because the DNA content between eggs from fresh or 24-h-old faeces varied considerably.

Notes: The physical and chemical properties of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) cured with different concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA) and 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (EMI-24) were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical and dielectric analyses, and solvent extraction studies. The effects of the phenol-epoxide and the secondary hydroxyl (R-OH)-epoxide reactions on the network formation process were analyzed using a recursive modeling technique to obtain expressions for the weight-averaged molecular weight, the weight fraction solubles, and the gel point as a function of the extent of cure and the epoxide-phenol reactant ratio. The sol fraction and the gel point predictions from recursive modeling studies of the network formation process agreed with the results obtained from the extraction studies. The results from the network modeling studies were also related to the thermal and rheological properties of the resin during cure.
