    Notes: Hydrogenated carbon-nitride films (CNx:H) were deposited by evaporation of aza-adenine (8-aza-6-aminopurine, C4N6H4) and irradiated during film growth by a nitrogen ion beam with energies of 25, 50, and 100 eV. The relationship between the deposition conditions and the chemical bonding structure was investigated by x-ray photoelectron and infrared spectroscopies. The mass density of the films was estimated from the C 1s plasmon energy and the optical properties were examined by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. The infrared spectra indicate that in the case of evaporated films, the molecular structure of aza-adenine is preserved without substantial nitrogen loss (N/C(approximate)1.3). With increasing energy of the assisting nitrogen ion beam, the structure is subsequently transformed into an amorphous phase. This transition is accompanied by an increasing nitrogen loss down to N/C(approximate)0.8, a decrease of the optical band gap, and an increase of the film density. The known molecular structure of aza-adenine permits the reconstruction of the C 1s and N 1s core-level spectra with deconvoluted spectral components representing the different bonding environments of C and N atoms present in the molecule. The spectral components are identified by comparing the experimental data with theoretical calculations of the corresponding binding energies. By analysis of the spectral changes induced by the nitrogen ion beam with increasing energies, it is possible to study the microstructural modifications of the material. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of nitrogen on the valence-electron plasmon energy in amorphous carbon–nitrogen alloys (a-C1−xNx) is used to identify structural changes in the material. The samples were prepared by dual-ion-beam-assisted deposition and studied in situ by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The plasmon energy of the alloy goes through a maximum above 15–20 at.% nitrogen concentration. This behavior is correlated with structural changes obtained in a semiempirical quantum chemical calculation on graphite-like carbon clusters, randomly substituted by nitrogen. At that concentration, the geometry optimization shows that the graphite-like conformation is unstable against the buckling of the structure. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The role of 0–1 programming problems having monotone or regular feasible sets was pointed out in [6]. The solution sets of covering and of knapsack problems are examples of monotone and of regular sets respectively. Some connections are established between prime implicants of a monotone or a regular Boolean functionβ on the one hand, and facets of the convex hullH of the zeros ofβ on the other. In particular (Corollary 2) a necessary and sufficient condition is given for a constraint of a covering problem to be a facet of the corresponding integer polyhedron. For any prime implicantP ofβ, a nonempty familyF(P) of facets ofH is constructed. Proposition 17 gives easy-to-determine sharp upper bounds for the coefficients of these facets whenβ is regular. A special class of prime implicants is described for regular functions and it is shown that for anyP in this class,F(P) consists of one facet ofH, and this facet has 0–1 coefficients. Every nontrivial facet ofH with 0–1 coefficients is obtained from this class.

    Notes: Abstract We take a regression-based approach to the problem of induction, which is the problem of inferring general rules from specific instances. Whereas traditional regression analysis fits a numerical formula to data, we fit a logical formula to boolean data. We can, for instance, construct an expert system for fitting rules to an expert's observed behavior. A regression-based approach has the advantage of providing tests of statistical significance as well as other tools of regression analysis. Our approach can be extended to nonboolean discrete data, and we argue that it is better suited to rule construction than logit and other types of categorical data analysis. We find maximum likelihood and bayesian estimates of a best-fitting boolean function or formula and show that bayesian estimates are more appropriate. We also derive confidence and significance levels. We show that finding the best-fitting logical formula is a pseudo-boolean optimization problem, and finding the best-fitting monotone function is a network flow problem.
