Notes: Abstract Surface and subsurface deformation and cracking around Vickers identations in fused silica have been studied. The indentations were sectioned by making the Vickers indents on and near the tip of a pre-existing crack. The characteristic median and lateral cracks around the impression and shallow cracks within the surface of the indentation were observed on the specimen surface. The subsurface deformation showed compacted or densified zones, devoid of any flow line rosettes. The dominant cracks, similar to the Hertzian cone cracks observed around purely elastic spherical indentations, occurred outside the compacted zones. These cone cracks make angles of 30 to 40° with the specimen surface. Multiple cone cracks with shallower angles often formed outside the major cone cracks. It has been suggested that the expansion of the boundary of the compacted zone as the indenter load is increased can cause median cracks during loading while the mismatch of strain at this boundary may give rise to lateral cracks during unloading.

Notes: Abstract Deformation processes within the grains and grain-boundary sliding are responsible for the formation of the porous zone and the various crack systems around plastic indentations in chemically vapour deposited (CVD) zinc sulphide. The porous zone is formed by gross grain-boundary displacements in the region directly beneath the indenter and all the cracks emanate from around the porous zone and are contained within an extensive plastic zone. For the particular grain orientation used, the material behaves in an ideal elastic/plastic manner with the development of shear flow lines within the porous zone; the interaction of the flow lines with each other or continued slip along the flow lines lead to preferential void nucleation. The porous zone forms at an average representative strain of about 2.5% and a corresponding pressure of 1.5GPa which is twice the yield stress.

Notes: Abstract A method for evaluating stress corrosion characteristics of thermally or chemically toughened glasses and ceramics is outlined. Values of the stress corrosion indexn (V = AKn) have been obtained and these are in excellent agreement with values for untreated materials. The analysis also explains the slightly greater absolute strength degradation observed for toughened glasses and ceramics.

Notes: Abstract An analysis for the nucleation of microcracks from the inhomogeneous flow lines in soda-lime glass under Vickers indentations is considered. The minimum loads for crack nucleation are shown to depend on the hardness,H, and the critical stress intensity factor,K IC. Unlike the Lawn and Evans analysis, the present model does not require the presence of any fortuitous flaws of critical dimensions in the material, since the flaws are nucleated by the deformation in the deformed zone.

Notes: Abstract Intense Rayleigh waves produced by the impact of high-velocity liquid jets on brittle solids were arranged to interact with well-defined surface flaws of dimensions 50 to 200 μm. The extent of crack growth was monitored as a function of distance from the impact site. It was found that considerable crack growth as well as crack branching occurred for cracks parallel to the incident wavefront and little or no growth for orthogonal cracks. The form of the surface wave was monitored using piezoelectric crystals attached to the surface. The results are discussed in terms of recent fracture mechanics analysis of stress-wave interaction with cracks. The significance of this study to strength degradation of brittle bodies subjected to rain-drop impact is pointed out.

Notes: Abstract The nature of the flow lines that occur in the deformed zone in soda-lime glass under pyramidal indentations has been investigated. A close examination of the deformed zone shows that the spiral flow lines meet at 110°, instead of the 90° required by the ideal rigid-plastic behaviour. The flow lines are indeed shear faults (of negligible thickness) produced by genuine shear displacements which are apparent at the intersection points of some of the flow lines. Evidence of void or crack formation at the intersection points or along the flow lines is also presented, along with a possible hardening effect from the suppression of slip at the intersection points of the flow lines.
