Notes: Abstract A relatively simple indentation technique for the rapid measurement of fracture surface energy, Γ, of small samples is described. The reliability of this technique is assessed by testing soda-lime glass for which there are good independent fracture mechanics determinations of fracture surface energy. The indentation technique gives a value for Γ of 4.33 J m−2 which compares favourably with the accepted value of 3.8 J m−2. Fracture surface energies of the {010} and {001} cleavage planes of single crystal olivine (modal composition Fo88Fa12) are then determined and compared with theoretical estimates of the thermodynamic surface energy, γ, calculated from atomistic parameters (γ is equal to Γ in the absence of dissipative processes during crack extension). The experimental values for Г{010} and Г{001} are respectively 0.98 J m−2 and 1.26 J m−2. The calculated values of γ{010} and γ{001} are respectively in the range from 0.37 J m−2 to 8.63 J m−2 and 12.06 J m−2. The particular advantages of the indentation technique for the study of the fracture surface energies of geological materials are outlined.

Notes: Abstract Hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings were deposited onto substrates of metal biomaterials (Ti, Ti6Al4V, and 316L stainless steel) by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Only ultra-high surface area HAp powder, prepared by the metathesis method 10Ca(NO3)2 + 6(NH4)2HPO4 + 8NH4OH), could produce dense coatings when sintered at 875–1000°C. Single EPD coatings cracked during sintering owing to the 15–18% sintering shrinkage, but the HAp did not decompose. The use of dual coatings (coat, sinter, coat, sinter) resolved the cracking problem. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) inspection revealed that the second coating filled in the “valleys” in the cracks of the first coating. The interfacial shear strength of the dual coatings was found, by ASTM F1044-87, to be ∼12 MPa on a titanium substrate and ∼22 MPa on 316L stainless steel, comparing quite favorably with the 34 MPa benchmark (the shear strength of bovine cortical bone was found to be 34 MPa). Stainless steel gave the better result since α-316L (20.5 μm mK-1) 〉 α-HAp (∼14 μm mK-1), resulting in residual compressive stresses in the coating, whereas α-titanium (∼10.3 μm mK-1) 〈 α-HAp, resulting in residual tensile stresses in the coating. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract Measurement of the elastic modulus (E) of investment materials has been difficult because of their low strength. However, these values are essential for engineering simulation and there are many methods available to assess the elasticity of materials. The present study compared two different methods with one of the methods being non-destructive in nature and can be used for specimens prepared for other tests. Two different types of investment materials were selected, gypsum-and phosphate-bonded. Method 1 is a traditional three-point bending test. Twelve rectangular bars with dimension of (70 x 9 x 3 mm) were prepared and placed on supports 56.8 mm apart. The test was conducted at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min by use of a universal testing machine. The load applied to the test specimen and the corresponding deflection were measured until the specimen fractured. The E value was calculated from a linear part of the stress-strain plot. Method 2 is an ultra micro-indentation system to determine near surface properties of materials with nanometer resolution. The measurement procedure was programd such that the specimens were indented with an initial contact force of 5 mN then followed by a maximum force of 500 mN. Measurement consisted of 10 indentations conducted with a spherical stainless steel indenter (R = 250 μm) that were equally spaced (500 μm). The E value rose asymptotically with depth of penetration and would approach the three-point bending test value at approximately four time’s maximum contact depth for both materials. Both methods are practical ways of measuring the E of investment materials.
