Notes: Abstract Competition from native soil rhizobia is likely to be an important factor limiting Phaseolus vulgaris L. inoculant response in Latin America. We used UMR 1116, a nod + fix− natural mutant of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv phaseoli strain CC511, as a reference strain to study competition for nodulation sites in this species. When P. vulgaris cv Carioca was planted in soils containing different proportions of UMR 1116 and the effective and competitive strain UMR 1899, UMR 1116 occupied more than 50% of the nodules at all inoculant ratios tested, though increasing the proportion of UMR 1899 in the inoculant did enhance the number and percentage of effective nodules and plant dry weight. Sixty two strains of bean rhizobia were tested in competition with UMR 1116. An inoculant ratio of 1:1 was used, with all strains applied to the soil rather than to seeds. Strains varied in the number and percentage of effective nodules produced in competition with UMR 1116, and in plant dry weight, and there was a strong correlation between variation in each of these traits and plant N accumulation. Seven of the strains (UMR 1073, 1084, 1102, 1125, 1165, 1378 and 1384) were identified as both superior in competitive ability and active in N2 fixation. Site of placement of the inoculant and ambient temperature influenced strain response.

Notes: Reports a systematic analysis of marketing positions advertised inthe Australian public sector between 1982 and 1991. Compares the use ofsuch positions by various component groups of organizations within thepublic sector. Using Kotler and Andreasen's typology, seeks to discoverthe extent to which such organizations are customer versus organizationcentred. Also analyses trends over the ten-year period. Discovers threedistinct segments of public sector organizations: the policy makers;service deliverers; and trading organizations.

Notes: Reviews the Australian National Heart Foundation's "Pick the Tick" foodendorsement program. The program is seen by the Foundation as part ofits mission to promote the kind of healthy living that is conducive toimproving the heart health of all Australians and reducing disabilityand premature death from heart and blood vessel disease. In this articlethe program is not evaluated in those terms but in terms of what isrequired for a successful brand in a marketplace. The program is shownto possess the attributes associated with a successful brand. As such itdemonstrates that promotion programs themselves can be branded. Alsodemonstrates an interesting extension of marketing techniques developedfor soap and subsequently extended to most product types, to the fieldof social marketing by a not-for-profit organization and specifically tothe promotion of an important aspect of public health.

Notes: Business, management, workers and governments are responding to global imperatives. These imperatives include marketing. The origins of global marketing lie in exporting. Presents and analyses data relating to small businesses in Australia which currently export or which plan to export. Thirty-five per cent of small businesses which consider it feasible to export have no plans to do so. The reasons for this export rejection are analysed. Other critical factors such as motivation to export; source of expert advice; and problems experienced with developing export markets are also reported and analysed. Provides recommendations as to how to increase the participation rate of small business in the growing global economy.

Notes: Sleepy cod Oxyeleotris lineolatus is a species of freshwater goby in demand in Australian markets by consumers of Asian origin. It is related to marble goby Oxyeleotris marmoratus, the most expensive freshwater food fish in Asia, which is cultured throughout southeast Asia in ponds and cages. The performance of sleepy cod in culture conditions was investigated to assess the viability of farming them in northern Australia. Sleepy cod fingerlings (62.8 ± 0.8 mm total length and 2.56 ± 0.095 g) were stocked into experimental ponds at 32,857 fish/ha, and grown out for 8 mo. Shelter was provided in each of three replicate ponds and was absent in three control ponds. The provision of shelter in juvenile growout was found to be of no benefit, although fish in ponds provided with shelter weighed slightly more per unit length than fish in ponds without shelter. Cannibalism was not a problem in growout, and survival was close to 100%. After the shelter trial was completed, fish were graded into large and small classes (three replicates of each), and grown out without shelter at the same density for 158 d. Following that, fish were again graded, and the largest 30% retained from growout at a density of 8,857 fish/ha (large, 198 ± 6.44 g) or 10,000 fish/ha (small, 48.9 ± 1.27 g). These were grown out for 188 d. Growth of selected stock at low densities was slower than earlier growth rates, although smaller fish gained weight more rapidly than larger fish. Growth rates were better than the only published data for marble goby. Further investigation into high density culture and different genotypes of sleepy cod needs to be undertaken to determine the viability of pond culture.

Notes: Abstract Carbon metabolism in Bradyrhizobium japonicum bacteroids is reviewed. Additionally, the bacteroid tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and its regulation under oxygen-limited conditions is considered, with emphasis on possible sites of TCA cycle rate-limiting reactions. Furthermore, we consider other adaptive pathways that may be employed by these organisms while in symbiosis. These pathways include: (1) a poly-β-hydroxy-butyrate shunt, (2) a malate-aspartate shuttle, (3) an α-ketoglutarate-glutamate shunt, (4) a modified dicarboxylic acid cycle, and (5) fermentation pathways leading to lactate, acetaldehyde and ethanol. The effects of oxygen limitation on host carbon metabolism are also considered briefly.
