    Description: The CH 3 I structural deformation induced by strong laser fields is revealed by time- and frequency-resolved ro-vibrational spectra. The experimental results show that the CH 3 I molecule undergoes ultrafast structural deformation of CH 3 “umbrella-closing” induced by the strong fs laser field (more than 10 11 W/cm 2 ) and followed by a structural relaxation of “umbrella-opening” within an exponential decay time scale of ∼620 fs. This study provides a first glimpse of the immense potential of the time- and frequency-resolved vibrational spectra in studying molecular deformation dynamics.

    Description: Approximately 2% of colorectal cancer is linked to pre-existing inflammation known as colitis-associated cancer, but most develops in patients without underlying inflammatory bowel disease. Colorectal cancer often follows a genetic pathway whereby loss of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumour suppressor and activation of beta-catenin are followed by mutations in K-Ras, PIK3CA and TP53, as the tumour emerges and progresses. Curiously, however, 'inflammatory signature' genes characteristic of colitis-associated cancer are also upregulated in colorectal cancer. Further, like most solid tumours, colorectal cancer exhibits immune/inflammatory infiltrates, referred to as 'tumour-elicited inflammation'. Although infiltrating CD4(+) T(H)1 cells and CD8(+) cytotoxic T cells constitute a positive prognostic sign in colorectal cancer, myeloid cells and T-helper interleukin (IL)-17-producing (T(H)17) cells promote tumorigenesis, and a 'T(H)17 expression signature' in stage I/II colorectal cancer is associated with a drastic decrease in disease-free survival. Despite its pathogenic importance, the mechanisms responsible for the appearance of tumour-elicited inflammation are poorly understood. Many epithelial cancers develop proximally to microbial communities, which are physically separated from immune cells by an epithelial barrier. We investigated mechanisms responsible for tumour-elicited inflammation in a mouse model of colorectal tumorigenesis, which, like human colorectal cancer, exhibits upregulation of IL-23 and IL-17. Here we show that IL-23 signalling promotes tumour growth and progression, and development of a tumoural IL-17 response. IL-23 is mainly produced by tumour-associated myeloid cells that are likely to be activated by microbial products, which penetrate the tumours but not adjacent tissue. Both early and late colorectal neoplasms exhibit defective expression of several barrier proteins.     Description: Low temperature water discharged from large reservoirs caused a lot of environmental problems, which consist of the impairment of downstream aquatic ecosystem and agricultural production. In order to quantify the impact of low temperature water discharged from large reservoir, an ecological survey and water temperature measurements were carried out on Gangkouwan Reservoir in Anhui province China. The Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) was employed to study the vertical water temperature profile and estimate the temperature of water released from Gangkouwan Reservoir in different hydrological year. And a measure was proposed for alleviation of the negative effects of the low temperature water.

    Description: The estimation methods for environmental flow were discussed in this paper. Based on the comparative analysis of calculation methods of environmental flow, a "Huaihe Method" was proposed, which consists of the hydrological estimation of the minimum environmental flow with validation by the requirment space for fish. The minimum environmental flows of the important control sections in main stream and tributaries in the Huai River basin are estimated. The recommened minimum environmental flow has been adopted in the water resources planning, which provided reference for rational allocation of environmental flow, water resources usage, and sustainable development for the local society.

    Notes: The dispersion relation of a fast wave in a thermal (minority) hydrogen–deuterium plasma is investigated near the ion cyclotron frequency of hydrogen. It is found that the plasma shield for waves between the two-ion hybrid resonance and the minority fundamental resonance may be reduced by the thermal effects of plasma. By using zero Larmor radius approximations, the condition for cutoff layer vanishing due to the thermal effects of plasma is obtained analytically. The formula derived is compared with the numerical results from the full thermal-plasma dispersion relation, and excellent agreement is found. The results show that the cutoff layer may disappear in practical minority hydrogen–deuterium heating experiments.

    Notes: Effect of lower-hybrid current drive on tearing mode instability is investigated in a drift kinetic formalism. In collisional regime the co-driven current plays a stabilizing role to tearing mode but a destabilizing role to drift tearing mode. A competitive effect among the gradients of density, temperature and driven current at the rational surface may exist. In semicollisional regime, lower hybrid current drive increases the growth rate of tearing mode and reduces the growth rate of drift tearing mode.

    Notes: Tip characteristics play an important role in the resolution and sensitivity of scanning probe microscopy. Extensive efforts have been devoted to tip fabrication. Most of the research is focused on scanning tunneling microscopy applications, which require sharp and short tips. Long tips that can be bent into cantilevered tips have great potential in atomic force microscopy/apertureless near-field scanning optical microscopy applications. However, the fabrication of such tips has been rarely reported. The present work is carried out with the aim of optimizing the conditions suitable for fabricating long and sharp tungsten tips. Besides topography, optical, and spectroscopic information, electrical and magnetic measurements can also be carried out with such tips obtained with the recipe reported in this article. The long tips also make it possible to measure deep grooves/trenches. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The transition in diamond crystal morphology from well-faceted microcrystalline to nanocrystalline phases as a function of increasing argon (Ar) concentration has been studied in a hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) system. The range of Ar concentration in a Ar–methane–hydrogen mixture that permits well-faceted diamond growth is up to 90%. At a concentration of 95.5%, a marked transition into nanocrystalline diamond phase could be observed. Although no graphitic phases were observed by transmission electron microscope and x-ray diffraction up to 95.5% Ar concentration, Raman analyses revealed a proportionate increase in amorphous carbon content with an increase in Ar concentration. The addition of Ar appears to create an electron-rich gas environment because a plasma can be readily discharged by applying a bias to the sample. Analysis of the plasma by optical emission spectroscopy revealed a linear correlation between Ar addition and the occurrence of C2 dimers in the plasma. Our results identified the narrow Ar-methane-hydrogen composition window that is effective for the growth of thick and smooth nanocrystalline diamond in HFCVD. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
