    Notes: Abstract Stable isotopic analyses were used to study trophic relationships in two communities of deep-sea hydrothermal vent organism in the Pacific Ocean. The community at Hanging Gardens on the East Pacific Rise (21°N), sampled in 1985, is dominated by two species of vestimentiferan tubeworms; communities at Alice Springs and Snail Pits on the Marianas Back Arc Spreading Center (western Pacific), sampled in 1987, are dominated by gastropod mollusks, barnacles, and anemones. In both locations, carbon and nitrogen isotopic values of vent invertebrates are significantly different from those of non-vent invertebrates collected at 11°N on the East Pacific Rise and elsewhere in the deep-sea. These distinct isotopic compositions reflect local sources of organic carbon and nitrogen used by vent consumers. Many vent invertebrates lacking chemoautotrophic endosymbionts have 13C-enriched values of-11 to-16%. compared to values of-17 to-22%. normally observed in deep-sea fauna. This suggests that a 13C-enriched food source is trophically important in both vent communities. Free-living bacteria colonizing surfaces and suspended in the water column may constitute this food resource. Nitrogen isotopic analyses show that the food web of the East Pacific Rise community has more trophic levels than the Marianas vent community.

    Notes: Abstract Fish scales from seven species of demersal fish in an archival collection were analyzed for stable isotopic compositions of carbon and nitrogen to study long-term changes in trophic structure of the Georges Bank food web. Nitrogen isotopic compositions are often used to infer trophic level. In the case of haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus (Linnaeus), there was a trend towards feeding at 2/3 of one trophic level (2.45% in δ15N) lower in 1987 than in 1929. Values of °13C, frequently employed to identify sources of organic carbon to consumers, declined by 1.5‰ from 1929 to 1960, and then increased again toward the present, suggesting changes in the food web at the level of the primary producers. Superimposed on long-term isotopic trends were short-term variations (1 to 10 yr).To identify potential causes for these isotopic trends, canonical correlation analysis was performed between isotopic data and a suite of environmental and population factors including sea surface temperature, the Greenland Regional Pressure Anomaly (GRPA), the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the following haddock stock parameters; stock size, fishing mortality, recruitment, and weight-at-age-2 (a measure of growth rate). Isotopic variation was significantly correlated with a combination of environmental and population variables: GRPA, NAO, weight-at-age-2, stock size, and fishing mortality. On the basis of published gut content analyses, the seven fish species were predicted to vary in trophic level (TL) from American plaice, Hippoglossoides platessoides (Fabricius), (TL 2.9) to summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus (Linnaeus), (TL 4.5), whereas measured °15N values suggested smaller differences in the trophic levels of these species (less than one TL). Four species showed good agreement between gut-predicted and measured δ15N values, while three species did not. Inclusion of information on ontogenetic dietary shifts in our predictions improved the agreement in some cases but not in other. Differences between stable isotope analysis and gut content analysis in terms of what they measure, i.e., integrated assimilated diet vs short-term ingested diet, respectively, may account for some of the differences in results. Based on our analyses and previous studies, feeding habits of these fish may undergo considerable year-to-year and geographic variation, some of which may have been missed in gut content analyses. To the extent that these fish are representative members of the food web, trophic variation in these fish may indicate more general changes in the food web.

    Notes: Abstract Total sulfur (STOT), elemental sulfur (S°) and sulfur-isotope compositions (δ34S) of marine animals were analyzed to determine whether these chemical characteristics could help distinguish animals with a sulfur-based, thiotrophic nutrition from animals whose nutrition is based on methanotrophy or on more normal consumption of phytoplankton-derived organic matter. The presence of S° was almost entirely confined to the symbiont-containing tissues of thiotrophs, but was sometimes undetectable in thiotrophic species where sulfide availability was probably low. When S° contents were subtracted, the remaining tissue-sulfur concentrations were similar for all nutritional groups. δ34S values were typically lower for thiotrophs than for other groups, although there was overlap in methanotroph and thiotroph values at some sites. Field evidence supported the existence of small to moderate (1 to 10‰)34S fractionations in the uptake of sulfides and metabolism of thiosulfate. In general, a total sulfur content of 〉3% dry weight, the presence of elemental sulfur, and δ34S values less than +5‰ can be used to infer a thiotrophic mode of nutrition.

    Notes: Abstract The biological community that surrounds the hypersaline cold water brine seeps at the base of the Florida Escarpment is dominated by two macrofaunal species: an undescribed bivalve of the family Mytilidac and a vestimentiferan worm, Escarpia laminata. These animals are apparently supported by the chemoautotrophic fixation of carbon via bacterial endosymbionts. Water column and sediment data indicate that high levels of both sulfide and methane are present in surface sediments around the animals but absent from overlying waters. Stable isotopic analyses of pore water indicate that there are two sources of sulfide: the first is geothermal sulfide carried in groundwater leaching from the base of the escarpment, and the second is microbial sulfide produced in situ. The vestimentiferan E. laminata, and the mytilid bivalve (seep mussel) live contiguously but rely on different substrates for chemoautotrophy. Enzyme assays, patterns of elemental sulfur storage and stable isotopic analyses indicate that E. laminata relies on sulfide oxidation and the seep mussel on methane oxidation for growth.

    Notes: Abstract Over 380 stable carbon isotope (δ13C) analyses made during 1981–82 showed that Syringodium filiforme Kutz seagrass meadows in the Indian River lagoon of eastern Florida have food webs based on algal rather than seagrass carbon. Seagrasses averaging approximately-8‰ were isotopically distinct from algae epiphytic on seagrass blades (X=-19.3‰) and particulate organic matter in the water column X=-21.6‰. δ13C values of most fauna ranged between-16 and-22‰, as would be expected if food web carbon were derived solely from algal sources. These results counter the idea that seagrass detritus is the dominant carbon source in seagrass ecosystems. Two factors that may contribute to the low apparent importance of seagrass in the study area are high algal productivities that equal or exceed S. filiforme productivity and the high rates of seagrass leaf export from meadows.

    Notes: 1 The great taxonomic and prey base diversity of colubrids (non-front-fanged snakes) suggests that their venoms may represent a ‘literal gold mine’ for scientists eager to find novel pharmacological probes (Mackessy, 2002). 2 While pharmacological characterization is lacking for most of these venoms, this is even more so with regard to activity of colubrid venoms on the mammalian autonomic nervous system. This study characterizes the activity of venom from the colubrid, Boiga dendrophila using in vitro smooth muscle preparations and the anaesthetized rat. 3 In the prostatic segment of the rat vas deferens, cumulative additions of venom (1–150 μg ml−1) induced concentration-dependent inhibition of electrically evoked (0.2 Hz, 0.3 ms, 70–100 V) twitches. The inhibitory effect of venom (100 μg ml−1) was attenuated by 8-phenyltheophylline (8-PT) (20 μm) and 8-cyclopentyl-1, 3-dipropylxanthine (20 μm) but not idazoxan (1 μm), or a combination of ranitidine (0.2 μm) and thioperamide (10 μm). The inhibitory effect of venom (100 μg ml−1) was augmented by dipyridamole (10 μm) but abolished by pretreatment with adenosine deaminase (7.5 units/100 μl) suggesting that it contains components with adenosine A1 receptor activity, most likely adenosine. 4 In isolated segments of guinea-pig ileum, venom (10–100 μg ml−1) caused concentration-dependent contractions which were inhibited by the muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine (0.1 μm) but not by the histamine receptor antagonist mepyramine (0.5 μm). 5 In the anaesthetized rat, venom (5–7.5 mg kg−1, i.v.) caused a hypotensive effect. 6 Our data suggest that the venom contains components with purinergic and muscarinic receptor activity.
