    Description: Discovery of new adsorbent materials with a high CO 2 working capacity could help reduce CO 2 emissions from newly commissioned power plants using precombustion carbon capture. High-throughput computational screening efforts can accelerate the discovery of new adsorbents but sometimes require significant computational resources to explore the large space of possible materials. We report the in silico discovery of high-performing adsorbents for precombustion CO 2 capture by applying a genetic algorithm to efficiently search a large database of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for top candidates. High-performing MOFs identified from the in silico search were synthesized and activated and show a high CO 2 working capacity and a high CO 2 /H 2 selectivity. One of the synthesized MOFs shows a higher CO 2 working capacity than any MOF reported in the literature under the operating conditions investigated here.

    Description: The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor (Nlrp) 6 maintains gut microbiota homeostasis and regulates antibacterial immunity. We now report a role for Nlrp6 in the control of enteric virus infection. Nlrp6(-/-) and control mice systemically challenged with encephalomyocarditis virus had similar mortality; however, the gastrointestinal tract of Nlrp6(-/-) mice exhibited increased viral loads. Nlrp6(-/-) mice orally infected with encephalomyocarditis virus had increased mortality and viremia compared with controls. Similar results were observed with murine norovirus 1. Nlrp6 bound viral RNA via the RNA helicase Dhx15 and interacted with mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein to induce type I/III interferons (IFNs) and IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs).     Description: All sky camera observations carried out over Taiwan showed intense equatorial plasma bubbles (EPB) in 630.0 nm airglow images on consecutive nights of 13-16 March, 2015, but was absent in the following night of 17 March when St. Patrick's Day magnetic storm occurred. Rate of total electron content (TEC) index by using Global Positioning System (GPS) network data also confirmed the absence of irregularities on the night 17 March. The results however revealed strong irregularities over Indian sector on the same night. Flux tube integrated Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth rates computed using the prior (forecast) state of Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model output after assimilating the GPS-TEC measurements also agree with the observations, showing smaller values over Taiwan and larger values over India on the night of 17 March. The ionospheric response to the storm over Taiwan that resulted in the apparent inhibition of EPB is investigated in this study by using the data assimilation output. Results indicate that on the night of the magnetic storm, pre-reversal enhancement of zonal electric field over Taiwan was weaker when compared to that over India. Further analysis suggests that the absence of enhancement in the zonal electric field could be due to westward penetration electric field in response to rapid northward turning of interplanetary magnetic field that occurred during the dusk period over Taiwan.

    Description: Here we demonstrate the potential utility of using chemical modification to reorganize metastable nanoparticles into nanostructured nanoparticles without coincidentally inducing extensive necking/sintering. The motivation for this effort derives from the concept that chemical reduction of a single component in a mixed-metal nanoparticle will create segregated islands of a second immiscible phase. Given the very high chemical energies inherent in nanoparticles, the formation of even smaller islands of a second phase can be anticipated to lead to extremely high interfacial energies that may drive these islands to diffuse to cores or surfaces to form core-shell structures that minimize such interfacial energies. Thus, ammonolysis of (TiO 2 ) 0.43 (Al 2 O 3)0.57 composition nanopowders where both elements are approximately uniformly mixed at atomic length scales, under selected conditions (1000 °C) for various periods of time at constant NH 3 flow rates leads primarily to the reduction of the Ti species to form TiN or TiON which then appears to diffuse to the surface of the particles. The final products consist of Al 2 O 3 @TiON core-shell nanopowders that remain mostly unaggregated pointing to a new mechanism for modifying nanopowder chemistries and physical properties.     Description: Flux tube integrated Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth rates computed using the results of ionosphere data assimilation are used for the first time to investigate global plasma bubble occurrence. The study is carried out by assimilating total electron content measurements using ground based global positioning system (GPS) receivers into thermosphere ionosphere electrodynamic general circulation model, and the growth rates are calculated using standalone model run without assimilation (control run) as well as using prior (or forecast) state output of the assimilation run. The growth rates are compared with rate of change of total electron content index (ROTI), estimated from global network of GPS receivers, as well as all sky airglow observations carried out over Taiwan on the nights of 16, and 17 March 2015. In contrast to the growth rates using the control run, results using data assimilation show remarkable agreement with the ROTI. Further, the all sky images reveal intense plasma bubbles over Taiwan on the night of 16 March, when the corresponding assimilated growth rate is also pronounced. Similarly, absence of plasma bubbles in the all sky images on the night of 17 March (St. Patrick's day storm) is supported by smaller growth rates predicted by the assimilation model. Significant improvements in the calculated growth rates could be achieved because of the accurate updating of zonal electric field in the data assimilation forecast. The results suggest that realistic estimate or prediction of plasma bubble occurrence could be feasible by taking advantage of the data assimilation approach adopted in this work.

    Description: The relations between the runaway stability characteristics and the flow patterns inside the runner of pump-turbine are supposed to be close and should be studied. The runaway processes of a model pump-turbine at four guide-vane openings (GVOs) were simulated by the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics. The results show that the runaway stability characteristics for the pump-turbine are different at different GVOs. For the small GVOs, the turbine characteristic trajectory undergoes damped oscillations; however, for large GVOs, the turbine characteristic trajectory settles into an un-damping oscillation. The evolution features of the reverse flow vortex structures (RFVS) at the runner inlet during the runaway oscillations have distinct patterns between the small and large GVOs.     Description: Currents through the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) and ZnO nanoparticles (PEDOT:PSS:ZnO)/CdS/indium tin oxide (ITO) hetero-structures are studied. The authors introduced the electrodeposition technique with sulfide treatment to improve the film quality of CdS. It is shown that sulfide treatment leads to a reduction in the number of donor-like defects (that is, sulfur vacancies and cadmium interstitials) in the CdS films, which leads to the conversion of carrier transport behavior from Poole-Frenkel emission to thermionic emission-diffusion for PEDOT:PSS:ZnO/CdS/ITO devices. A correlation is identified for providing a guide to control the current transport behavior of PEDOT:PSS:ZnO/CdS/ITO devices.

    Notes: In order to study the wearing comfort of pressure for tight-fit clothing, the sensation of wearing pressure and the other related sensations have been assessed for knit garments, which have different sizes and fabrics which have different extensibilities, by developing a wearing experimental procedure. Using factor analysis with principal factor solutions and rotated by the Varimax method, we obtained relevant factor matrices about the subjective assessment. At the same time, objective clothing pressure, fabric extensibility and garment fitness have been measured. Regression analysis showed that the garment fitness and fabric extensibility had great predictive power for the subjective pressure assessment.
