Description: The thick oceanic crust of the Caribbean plate appears to be the tectonized remnant of an eastern Pacific oceanic plateau that has been inserted between North and South America. The emplacement of the plateau into its present position has resulted in the obduction and exposure of its margins, providing an opportunity to study the age relations, internal structure and compositional features of the plateau. We present the results of 40Ar-39Ar radiometric dating, major-, trace-element, and isotopic compositions of basalts from some of the exposed sections as well as drill core basalt samples from Leg 15 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Five widely spaced, margin sections yielded ages ranging from 91 to 88 Ma. Less well-constrained radiometric ages from the drill cores, combined with the biostratigraphic age of surrounding sediments indicate a minimum crystallization age of ~90 Ma in the Venezuelan Basin. The synchroneity of ages across the region is consistent with a flood basalt origin for the bulk of the Caribbean plateau i.e., large volume, rapidly erupted, regionally extensive volcanism.. The ages and compositions are also consistent with plate reconstructions that place the Caribbean plateau in the vicinity of the Galápagos hotspot at its inception. The trace-element and isotopic compositions of the ~90 Ma rocks indicate a depleted mantle and an enriched, plume-like mantle were involved in melting to varying degrees across the plateau. Within the same region, a volumetrically secondary, but widespread magmatic event occurred at 76 Ma, as is evident in Curacao, western Colombia, Haiti, and at DSDP Site 152/ODP Site 1001 near the Hess Escarpment. Limited trace-element data indicate that this phase of magmatism was generally more depleted than the first. We speculate that magmatism may have resulted from upwelling of mantle, still hot from the 90 Ma event, during lithospheric extension attending gravitational collapse of the plateau, andror tectonic emplacement of the plateau between North and South America. Still younger volcanics are found in the Dominican Republic (69 Ma) and the Quepos Peninsula of Costa Rica (63 Ma). The latter occurrence conceivably formed over the Galápagos hotspot and subsequently accreted to the western edge of the plateau during subduction of the Farallon plate.

Notes: Summary Serum bone Gla protein, a sensitive and specific marker of bone turnover, was measured in 35 acromegalic patients (14 untreated, 8 clinically active, and 13 cured) and 21 controls. We also examined 10 acromegalic patients before and after transsphenoidal surgery. Untreated and clinically active acromegalic patients had significantly higher serum bone Gla protein concentrations than the control subjects. Other nonspecific biochemical markers of bone metabolism, such as urinary hydroxyproline and urinary calcium, were also present in significantly greater amounts in active acromegalic patients. After treatment, a significant decrease in levels was observed, with return to control levels. In acromegalic patients, positive correlations were found among serum bone Gla protein and serum growth hormone and serum insulin-like growth factor I levels, as well as among levels of insulin-like growth factor I and serum phosphorus, serum alkaline phosphatase, and urinary hydroxyproline. These results suggest that serum bone Gla protein is a sensitive marker of the action of growth hormone in bone metabolism in acromegaly, a role that is probably mediated by insulin-like growth factor I.

Notes: We report magnetic field dependence of the transport critical current and dc magnetic susceptibility measurements on YBa2Cu3O7−x superconductors formed by melt-solid reactions at 950 °C between Ba-Cu-O (or Tb-Ba-Cu-O) and solid nonstoichiometric Y-Ba-Cu-oxide. Four-probe dc critical current measurements at 77, 64, and 4.2 K show strong depression of the critical current density with increasing magnetic field in agreement with a model of weakly linked superconducting regions. Diamagnetic shielding and Meissner flux expulsion measurements in the temperature range 10–300 K show about one third volume fraction of perfect superconductivity. Both shielding and flux expulsion were observed to be approximately temperature independent below 60 K indicating strong coupling between the grains throughout the entire volume below this temperature.

Notes: We have carried out dc magnetization (x=0 and 0.05) and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy (x=0.05) measurements of Ho1Ba2(Cu1−x Fex)3O7−y , between room temperature (RT) and 4.2 K. Based on x-ray diffraction results all samples are single phase, and either orthorhombic (x=0) or tegragonal (x=0.05). Magnetization measurements determined the onset Tc to be either 90 K (orthorhombic) or 48 K (tetragonal). Mössbauer spectra between RT and 20 K are nearly identical, each consisting of three superposed quadrupole doublets. As the temperature is lowered below about 10 K the Mössbauer spectra exhibit paramagnetic relaxation. The relaxation time increases by about two orders of magnitude as the temperature decreases from 10 to 4.2 K. No magnetic ordering of the Fe moments was observed.
