    Description: [1]  The evolution of the southeastern Gondwana margin in the Papua New Guinea segment is manifested by ophiolites signifying plate collision, volcanic arcs marking subduction and metamorphic core complexes that have developed during extensional events and exhumation associated with sea floor spreading in the Woodlark Basin to the east. In detail the Papuan Ultramafic Belt marks a well documented collision between continental crust and a subduction system. However, to the southeast an extensive sequence of basaltic rocks known as the Milne Terrain is more problematic. Geochemical data indicate that these upper Cretaceous and Eocene rocks have MORB-type affinities and their most likely tectonic association is with the opening of the Coral Sea Basin. Milne Terrain rocks represent the lower plate in the obduction system along which the Papuan Ultramafic Belt was emplaced and thus they are the structural equivalent of the continental crust which was separated from the Australian continental block by the opening of the Coral Sea. Spectacular uplift (〉4 km) of the oceanic basaltic crust of the Milne Terrain may be due to the underlying presence of under-plated material associated with a Late Miocene – Pliocene episode of subduction immediately prior to the encroachment of the Woodlark spreading center into the Papuan area.

    Description: Continuous pyroclastic successions from monogenetic volcanoes in the Jeju Island Volcanic Field (Korea) were targeted for detailed geochemical investigations of juvenile ejecta to show that multiple distinct magma pulses may be erupted during a single monogenetic eruption. Deeply derived, and possibly multiply sourced, evolving magma pulses may erupt sequentially from the same vent and form generally uninterrupted depositional sequences with continuous chemical trends. Alternatively, pulses can rise independently, resulting in breccia horizons and truncation surfaces in depositional sequences and in stepped and mixed chemical trends. We infer that uninterrupted eruptions result from clear plumbing systems in which a single large dyke system feeds an eruption and where differently sourced magmas are erupted independently. Congested plumbing systems consisting of dyke complexes give rise to vent shifts, asymmetrical eruptive centres and composite depositional sequences. Integration of chemical variation and eruptive dynamics provides a powerful means of understanding monogenetic volcanoes. Terra Nova, 1–6, 2011

    Description: Neurogenesis is restricted in the adult mammalian brain; most neurons are neither exchanged during normal life nor replaced in pathological situations. We report that stroke elicits a latent neurogenic program in striatal astrocytes in mice. Notch1 signaling is reduced in astrocytes after stroke, and attenuated Notch1 signaling is necessary for neurogenesis by striatal astrocytes. Blocking Notch signaling triggers astrocytes in the striatum and the medial cortex to enter a neurogenic program, even in the absence of stroke, resulting in 850 +/- 210 (mean +/- SEM) new neurons in a mouse striatum.     Description: Infection of hypophysectomized mice with Newcastle disease virus caused a time-dependent increase in corticosterone and interferon production. Prior treatment with dexamethasone completely inhibited the virus-induced elevation in corticosterone concentration, but did not significantly alter the interferon response. Lymphocytes appear to be the most likely source of an adrenocorticotropin-like substance that is responsible for the increased corticosterone, since spleen cells from the virus-infected, but not from control or dexamethasone-treated, hypophysectomized mice showed positive immunofluorescence with antibody to adrenocorticotropin-(1-13 amide). Thus the adrenocorticotropin-like material and interferon appear to be coordinately induced the differentially controlled products of different genes.     Description: Hepatocyte-stimulating factor and interleukin-1 are proteins produced by monocytes in response to inflammatory challenge. Neither of these monokines had direct effects on steroid production by cultured adrenocortical cells. Both monokines stimulated pituitary cells (AtT-20) to release adrenocorticotropic hormone; interleukin-1 was equipotent with a combination of corticotropin-releasing factor and arginine vasopressin, and hepatocyte-stimulating factor was at least three times as effective. The synthetic glucocorticoid, dexamethasone, inhibited production of hepatocyte-stimulating factor by cultured monocytes.     Description: This study analyzes the largest initial breakdown (IB) pulse in flashes from four storms in Florida; data from three sensor arrays are used. The range-normalized, zero-to-peak amplitude of the largest IB pulse was determined along with its altitude, duration, and timing within each flash. Appropriate data were available for 40 intracloud (IC) and 32 cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes. Histograms of amplitude of the largest IB pulse by flash type were similar, with mean (median) values of 1.49 (1.05) V/m for IC flashes and -1.35 (-0.87) V/m for CG flashes. The largest IB pulse in 30 IC flashes showed a weak inverse relation between pulse amplitude and altitude. Amplitude of the largest IB pulse for 25 CG flashes showed no altitude correlation. Duration of the largest IB pulse in ICs averaged twice as long as in CGs (96 μs versus 46 μs), and all of the CG durations were 〈100 μs. Among the ICs, there is a positive relation between largest IB pulse duration and amplitude; the linear correlation coefficient is 0.385 with outliers excluded. The largest IB pulse in IC flashes typically occurred at a longer time after the first IB pulse (average 4.1 ms) than was the case in CG flashes (average 0.6 ms). In both flash types, the largest IB pulse was the first IB pulse in about 30% of the cases. In one storm all 42 IC flashes with triggered data had IB pulses.
