    Notes: Abstract  Forty-three untreated and actively and passively (wetland) treated coal mine drainage sediments and five yellow-red pigments were characterized using X-ray fluorescence, fusion-inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and tristimulus colorimeter. Primary crystalline iron-bearing phases were goethite and lepidocrocite, and iron phases converted to hematite upon heating. Quartz was nearly ubiquitous except for synthetic pigments. Gypsum, bassinite, calcite, and ettringite were found in active treatment sediments. Iron concentrations from highest to lowest were synthetic pigment〉wetland sediment〉natural pigment〉active treatment (untreated sediments varied more widely), and manganese was highest in actively treated sediments. Loss on ignition was highest for passively treated sediments. No clear trends were observed between quantified color parameters (L*, a*, b*, and Redness Index) and chemical compositions. Because sediments from passive treatment are similar in chemistry, mineralogy, and color to natural pigments, the mine drainage sediments may be an untapped resource for pigment.

    Notes: Abstract The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a family of lysosomal storage diseases that result from the accumulation of partially catabolized glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) within lysosomes. A characteristic of most affected individuals is radiographic evidence of symmetrical epiphyseal dysplasia, with short stature and degenerative joint disease. Although there is evidence of epiphyseal dysfunction, little is known of the changes that occur at the morphological level. The growth plate of the femoral head was studied by light and electron microscopy in five cats with MPS VI (Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome, arylsulfatase B deficiency) and 12 normal cats. Compared with the normals, the MPS VI cat growth plates exhibited poorly organized proliferative zones, an almost total loss of column formation in the hypertrophic zone, an uneven chondro-osseous junction, a disorganized calcifying cartilage zone, and abnormal or reduced numbers of osteoclasts. By electron microscopy, the cytoplasm of affected cat chondrocytes was filled with membrane-bound vacuoles. Together these findings indicate that the MPS diseases cause major changes in growth plate structure and function.

    Notes: Abstract Adult male pigeons were fed 500 ppm of nontoxic chlordene per day for 6 weeks. The ultrastructure of hepatic cells of treated pigeons was examined and compared with that of the control birds. Chlordene feeding induced cytological changes in the structure of liver cells. Thinning of the microvilli of bile canaliculi and clear marking of fibrous long spacing and non-fibrous segment long spacing on collagen fibers were noticed. Increase in the number as well as the vacuolation of lipid bodies in certain portions of the cytoplasm, presence of myeloid bodies in mitochondria, and an increase in the smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum were observed in the liver cells of pigeons given chlordene.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied the CO hydrogenation over a Co/SiO2 catalyst under mild reaction conditions (up to 4.4 bar total pressure, H2/CO = 2,T = 483K) and performed a post-reaction analysis of the chemical surface composition by means of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) in hydrogen gas. A hydrocarbon chain growth probability α = 0.78 was found in the catalytic studies. The SIMS analysis revealed the existence of individually adsorbed CxHy species up to C8Hy, in accordance with end-on bonding to the catalyst surface. These species were removed from the catalyst surface in the subsequent H2-TPR experiment. Significant methane desorption occurred at temperatures (⩾500 K) well above those of the longer-chain hydrocarbons indicating either an increasing hydrogenolysis activity of Co metal during H2-TPR or the presence of a more tightly bound “carbidic” adsorbate under FT conditions.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of the preparation procedure of tungsten carbide on the mechanism of carburization is discussed. This work is focused on the reduction and the carburization of tungsten trioxide by a mixture of hydrocarbon and H2 to form WC. Temperature-programmed reaction spectra obtained with CH4, C2H6 and C2H4 have been measured. In presence of the CH4-H2 mixture, H2 is the reducing agent and the hydrocarbon is consumed for the carburization whereas C2H6 or C2H4 participates in the reduction of the tungsten oxide. The temperatures of reduction and carburization are lower by about 150 K using C2H6 or C2H4 instead of CH4. Such a decrease of the temperature of reduction of tungsten oxide is needed to avoid the formation of poorly reducible compounds that can occur during the preparation of supported tungsten carbide. Furthermore, the surface area of the resulting carbide is 25 m2/g with C2H6 and C2H4 and 10 m2/g with CH4. During the carburization, the deposit of excess carbon on the WC surface is larger with the C2 hydrocarbons than with CH4, but it protects the carbide and can be removed by hydrogen treatment.
