    Description: Lymphocyte development is critically influenced by self-antigens. T cells are subject to both positive and negative selection, depending on their degree of self-reactivity. Although B cells are subject to negative selection, it has been difficult to test whether self-antigen plays any positive role in B cell development. A murine model system of naturally generated autoreactive B cells with a germ line gene-encoded specificity for the Thy-1 (CD90) glycoprotein was developed, in which the presence of self-antigen promotes B cell accumulation and serum autoantibody secretion.     Description: Developing alphabeta T cells diverge into the CD4 and CD8 lineages as they mature in the thymus. It is unclear whether lineage commitment is mechanistically distinct from the process that selects for the survival of T cells with useful T cell receptor (TCR) specificities (positive selection). In HD mice, which lack mature CD4+ T cells, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II-restricted T cells are redirected to the CD8 lineage independent of MHC class I expression. However, neither TCR-mediated signaling nor positive selection is impaired.     Description: The gene encoding the BCL-6 transcriptional repressor is frequently translocated and mutated in diffuse large cell lymphoma. Mice with a disrupted BCL-6 gene developed myocarditis and pulmonary vasculitis, had no germinal centers, and had increased expression of T helper cell type 2 cytokines. The BCL-6 DNA recognition motif resembled sites bound by the STAT (signal transducers and activators of transcription) transcription factors, which mediate cytokine signaling. BCL-6 could repress interleukin-4 (IL-4)-induced transcription when bound to a site recognized by the IL-4-responsive transcription factor Stat6.     Notes: We introduce a new technique for rapidly heating (106 °C/s) thin films using an electrical thermal annealing (ETA) pulse technique. By applying a high-current dc electrical pulse to a conductive substrate-heater material (Si), joule heating occurs thus heating the thin film. This method was demonstrated by heating thin films of aluminum at rates ranging from 103 to 106 °C/s. The temperature of the system is measured by using the substrate heater as a thermistor and is found to be within ≈±10 °C during anneals at ≈105 °C/s. Phase transformations in the Ti-Si system were also observed using in situ resistivity measurements during ETA at ≈104 °C.

    Notes: Microstructural study of the C49–TiSi2 to C54–TiSi2 polymorphic transformation has been performed to elucidate microstructural evolution and possible mechanism of the phase transformation. It has been shown that the nucleation of the C54–TiSi2 is heterogeneous, and preferentially takes place at triple grain junctions or grain boundaries. The interphase interfaces between C49 and C54 disilicides are often ragged with incoherent characteristics. The growth of the C54 phase is found to proceed by advancing the highly mobile incoherent interfaces in all directions toward the heavily faulted C49 phase. No rigorous orientation relationships are found between the two phases. The microstructural features of the transformation bear some massive characteristics. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Delamination of TiN/Ti bilayers on SiO2 is a serious problem during W chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using WF6 to form vertical interconnects in integrated circuits. In order to obtain insight into the delamination mechanism, we have determined depth-distributions of W and F in sputter-deposited TiN/Ti bilayers on SiO2 as a function of WF6 exposure time tWF6 at 445 °C. Even for tWF6〈6 s, significant concentrations of both W (≈3.5 at. %) and F (≈2 at. %) penetrate through the 106-nm-thick TiN film. W piles up at the TiN/Ti interface, while F rapidly saturates the TiN layer and accumulates in the Ti underlayer at concentrations up to ≈10 at. % for tWF6=60 s. Cross-sectional and scanning transmission electron microscopy analyses demonstrate that WF6 penetrates into the TiN layer through nanometer-scale intercolumnar voids spanning the entire film thickness and reacts with the Ti underlayer. We propose that the high F concentrations in the Ti layer weakens the Ti/SiO2 interface leading to adhesion failure of the TiN/Ti bilayer. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A finite element of arbitrary quadrilateral shape is presented for plane elasticity analysis. The element is derived from triangular fields of compatible quadratic displacements with vertex connectors which include rotations. All rigid body movements and constant strain states are recovered exactly. Results from several test problems demonstrate that very good numerical accuracy is obtained for both displacements and stresses, even for quite coarse finite element meshes.

    Notes: The performance of the constant strain triangle with added ‘drilling’ rotations is evaluated by solving a variety of plane test problems. Numerical results confirm that the new element is always superior to the standard constant strain triangle and that it is of similar accuracy to the best available alternative triangular elements of other authors. It is, however, less accurate than some rectangular elements which include drilling rotations.

    Notes: Details are given of a finite element scheme for the determination of the elastic buckling loads of thin flat plates of arbitrary shape under general kinematic and traction boundary conditions. The buckling loads are calculated using a triangular finite element with corner connections which is based on a previously derived variational principle combining both stresses and displacements. Numerical solutions are presented to a number of example problems, including plates with reinforcing members, and comparisons are made, where possible, with results from the finite element analyses of other authors and with exact or classical Rayleigh-Ritz solutions.

    Notes: Early attempts to construct a triangular finite element for plate bending problems from a compatible cubic displacement field are not entirely satisfactory. The present paper shows how an accurate plate element can be achieved using independent cubic polynomial assumptions for the internal and boundary displacements in conjunction with a modified potential energy principle. This approach yields a simple algebraic formulation with favourable connection quantities at the element vertices which will appeal to practical users of the conventional finite element displacement method. Moreover, in Appendix I it is shown that the cubic element is identical to a previous hybrid stress element with linear internal bending and twisting moments and cubic boundary displacements. The stresses obtained from the former hybrid finite element solution therefore satisfy the strain compatibility conditions exactly. This remarkable result has an important significance in the theory of hybrid finite elements.
