Notes: Abstract α-crotamine is a small toxic protein (42 amino acid residues with three disulphide bridges) present in the venom of Crotallus durissus terrificus. Molecular parameters (R g=13.7 Å, S=3,000 Å2, V=9,200 Å3 and D max=40 Å) were derived from SAXS curves obtained from a solution of this protein at pH=4.5. An excellent agreement between the experimental distance distribution curve and that calculated from a model consisting of two lobes linked by the Cys(18)-Cys(30) disulphide bridge.

Notes: A number of isolator–semiconductor nanocrystal composites exhibit quantum confinement effects and nonlinear optical properties. In this work, the formation and growth of CdTe and CdTe0.9S0.1 nanocrystals immersed in a borosilicate glass host matrix were studied by small-angle x-ray scattering using synchrotron radiation during in situ annealing in the 560–580 °C temperature range. The values of the average radii of the CdTe nanocrystals determined by using Guinier plots for different annealing times (20–30 A(ring)) agree with those obtained from optical absorption spectroscopy measurements. The nanocrystal size distribution depends on the thermal history and composition of the samples. The existence of other structural heterogeneities having an average size of several hundred ångstroms was detected. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Brazilian synchrotron light source consists of a 1.15 GeV electron storage ring with a 100 MeV injector. Most of their components have already been developed in-house and production has started. The increase of injection energy is being considered via a booster, for full energy, or by recirculating the beam in the LINAC (200 MeV) [R. H. Farias et al. (unpublished)]. An update of the production and characterization of the accelerators components and beamlines is presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The phase separation of an 80% B2O3–15% PbO–5% Al2O3 (weight %) glass after splat-cooling was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering. The wavenumber which receives maximal amplification and the scattering intensity corresponding to this wavenumber were determined as a function of the cooling rate of the glass. The experimental results qualitatively agree with the main features of previous calculations based on the linear theory of spinodal decomposition, but no quantitative agreement is obtained.

Notes: A small-angle X-ray scattering experimental study of tricalcium silicate (C3S) porous gel has been performed with synchrotron radiation. The experimental scattering intensity data are in accordance with the prediction for a porous fractal model. It is concluded that the porous fractal model describes the real structure better than the classical model which assumes the existence of differentiated macro-, meso- and microporosity.

Notes: Monolithic samples of SnO2 xerogel were produced by careful control of the gelation and drying steps of material preparation. In these samples, small and nanoporous aggregates stick together, yielding a monolithic (nonpowdered) material. The material was analyzed by in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) during isothermal treatment at temperatures ranging from 473 to 773 K. At 473 K, the SAXS intensity does not change significantly with time. All experimental scattering intensity functions for T 〉 473 K are composed of two wide peaks, which evolve with increasing time. Each of them was associated with one of the modes of a bimodal distribution of pore sizes corresponding to a fine (intra-aggregate) and a coarse (inter-aggregate) porosity. The SAXS intensities of the maxima of both peaks increase with increasing treatment time, while the position of their maxima, associated with an average correlation distance, decreases. The time dependences of the SAXS intensity corresponding to both families of pores qualitatively agree with those expected for a two-phase separating system exhibiting dynamic scaling properties. The time evolutions of the several moments of the structure function of samples heat treated at 773 K exhibit a good quantitative agreement with the theory of dynamic scaling for systems evolving by a coagulation mechanism. The kinetic parameters are the same for both peaks, indicating that the same mechanism is responsible for the structural evolution of both families of pores.

Notes: Pb- and Te-doped borosilicate glasses are transformed by appropriate heat treatment into a composite material consisting of a vitreous matrix in which semiconductor PbTe nanocrystals are embedded. This composite exhibits interesting non-linear optical properties in the infrared region, in the range 10–20 000 Å. The shape and size distribution of the nanocrystals and the kinetics of their growth were studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) during in situ isothermal treatment at 923 K. The experimental results indicate that nanocrystals are nearly spherical and have an average radius increasing from 16 to 33 Å after 2 h at 923 K, the relative size dispersion being time-invariant and approximately equal to 8%. This investigation demonstrates that the kinetics of nanocrystal growth are governed by the classic mechanism of atomic diffusion. The radius of nanocrystals, deduced by applying the simple Efros & Efros [Sov. Phys. Semicond. (1982), 16, 772–775] model using the energy values corresponding to the exciton peaks of optical absorption spectra, does not agree with the average radius determined by SAXS.

Notes: The sol-gel transition of an aqueous solution of zirconium oxychloride modified by sulfuric acid (Zr:S 3:1) has been studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) performed in situ during one cycle of heating and cooling between 298 and 358 K. The experimental SAXS curves exhibit three regions, at small, medium and high q values, characteristic of the Guinier, 'fractal' and Porod regimes, respectively. The value of 5.5 Å for the radii of the primary particles, obtained from the cross over of the Porod and fractal regimes, is consistent with the size of the inner core of the polynuclear Zr18O4(OH)38.8(SO4)12.6.33H2O molecule. These molecules aggregate as small clusters (31 Å) of fractal structure, with a dimensionality D = 2.16 in the sol. The value of the fractal dimensionality, which is characteristic of ideal branched polymers, decreases during heating, attaining a value of 2.0, characteristic of swollen polymers. Above the critical temperature (329 K), the average size of aggregates increases abruptly to 200 Å and the fractal dimensionality decreases to D = 1.75, this value being characteristic of a cluster-cluster aggregation process.

Notes: The synchrotron light source designed and constructed at the LNLS is composed of a 1.37 GeV electron storage ring and a 120 MeV linac for low-energy injection. The storage ring has been commissioned and has already reached the designed electron-beam energy, current and emittance. The electron lifetime is now 6 h at 60 mA, and is steadily increasing. Seven beamlines (TGM, SGM, SXS, XAFS, XRD, SAXS, PCr) have been constructed in parallel with the electron accelerators and are at present in operation. Beam time was allocated to 129 approved research projects for the second semester of 1997. A number of them are currently under way.
